Inspired by thoughts about The Blueprint 2.

In the old days this meant triple vinyl, now it means double CD. What's the best extreme-length pop or rock record ever? How much filler is on it?

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 23:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Ummmmmmm......SANDINISTA, it's copious filler forgiven by other stellar tracks therein.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 23:46 (twenty-two years ago)

69 Love Songs, the recent Acid Mothers Temple Family compilation..

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 23:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Toss everything mentioned so far except AMT, include M****n C****e by guess who, and I'm a happy Ned for an afternoon.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Sadinista! is my favourite Clash album. Not their *best* album, but my favourite. Second 69 Love Songs, too.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 00:30 (twenty-two years ago)

In the old days this meant triple vinyl

To be difficult, Blueprint 2 is in fact a quadruple LP (with a couple of tracks not on the CDs).

Anyway, are you limiting this to albums exclusively recorded as multi-disc sets? You know, like tossing a bunch of rareties/outtakes/etc. together like the new Windy & Carl collection doesn't qualify (not that I would qualify it, I haven't heard it, I'm just seeing the boundaries).

Vic Funk, Wednesday, 15 January 2003 01:03 (twenty-two years ago)

glass - einstein on the beach or music with 12 parts

phil turnbull (philT), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 01:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd have to go with Sandanista, too. My first "punk" album (same as Kurt Cobain's).

I have only the first disc of 69 Love Songs and I think it's so-so. Does it get better?

Jim M (jmcgaw), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 01:21 (twenty-two years ago)

The first few songs on the first disc are as good as it gets fer 69 Love Songs I think, but volume two is more consistently enjoyable.

Kurt Cobain hated Sadinista!" and prefered Nevermind The Bollocks..., which just goes to show what a fule he was.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 01:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm less interested in "serious" music composition like the Glass, more in pop & rock & trying to push the boundries there...also, forget the retrospectives & box sets, new material only here (which means 69 LS counts, of course.)

Mark (MarkR), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 03:22 (twenty-two years ago)

CHAKI 2 THREAD!

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 03:28 (twenty-two years ago)

69LS, definitely. But these are also stellar:
Laurie Anderson: United States Live
Half Japanese: 1/2 Gentlemen/Not Beasts

Ernest P. (ernestp), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 03:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Agreed on Sixty Nine Love Songs.

What about Unwound, Leaves Turn Inside You? It's double CD, but I don't think it's 120 minutes.. More like 95 or so, I think. I can't think of many albums that stretch this long; Sandinista is so-so. Too much filler to wade through. A single LP of the best songs on it would be pretty amaxing, though.

Ian Johnson, Wednesday, 15 January 2003 03:38 (twenty-two years ago)

If an album is 95 minutes, it would have been a double in the LP era. I'm interested in the post-CD era kind of excess.

Mark (MarkR), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 03:51 (twenty-two years ago)

*still waiting to hear chaki drop some EMANCIPATION and CRYSTAL BALL on your dre asses, assuming that he likes those records -- which he may not, but I'm guessing he does*

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 09:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I've it said before and I'll say it again: Fushitsusha's bouble live.

all the songs are great on that one.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 09:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Zappa's "Lather" (should be an umlaut there) is astounding. Originally conceived as a four-album set, the tracks got reformatted and scattered over at least five different FZ releases after "the record company" refused to release the set. The reconstituted "Lather" on CD, even without the bonus tracks, is well over 120m, and, of course, there is some filler. But a lot of that filler, to me at least, stems from hearing tracks out of their "original" contexts ("Zappa in New York", "Sheik Yerbouti") and in a more demo-y form (that is, not overdubbed to the suburbs and back). "The Adventures of Greggery Peccary" alone is worth the price.

You may proceed to throw wadded up balls of shrink-wrap from "69 Love Songs" at me.

weatheringdaleson (weatheringdaleson), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 09:51 (twenty-two years ago)

''bouble live''

sorry. double live.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 09:52 (twenty-two years ago)

ooh goodie, another chance to plug Koen by Köhn from last year. All killer, no filler!

Jeff W, Wednesday, 15 January 2003 10:17 (twenty-two years ago)

What about the Merzbox?

man, Wednesday, 15 January 2003 12:04 (twenty-two years ago)

well that's not an album but a box set.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 12:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Rovo's live album "Tonic 2001" is nearly 120 minutes.

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

From the pre-CD era, Carla Bley's "Escalator Over the Hill" is 120 minutes long (it was a triple LP).

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Rovo's live album "Tonic 2001" is nearly 120 minutes

How is that? I have the studio one before & I like it a lot.

Mark (MarkR), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's great. It has looser live feeling, and they give the songs plenty of time to build and develop. It's a little more trance-y than the studio album I have ("Imago") and more organic. The recording is excellent. Great guitar-violin interplay. It was one of my favorite albums of 2002.

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 17:52 (twenty-two years ago)

How long is George Harrison's "This Thing Must Pass...Mustn't It?"

Paula G., Wednesday, 15 January 2003 18:06 (twenty-two years ago)

rovo sounds good nate. if i see it I'll pick this up actually (well, as long as it isn't mega expensive).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

All Things Must Pass is just over 100 minutes.

christoff (christoff), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

How long is George Harrison's "This Thing Must Pass...Mustn't It?"

Really? It's a triple album, must be just barely. The two studio discs are solid, but I've barely ever heard the slab'o'livejams.

Mark (MarkR), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Swans - Soundtracks for the Blind
Aphex Twin - SAW II
Corrupted - Llenandose de Gusanos

I could lose a track here and there on the first two (the Corrupted one is two tracks total!) but they all seem to warrant their length. But aside from the Aphex one, can't say I listen to them all that often.

original bgm, Wednesday, 15 January 2003 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

If compilations and box sets are off-limits, then I don't think there are any good albums that long, are there? Sandanista blows.

Burr, Wednesday, 15 January 2003 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Aphex Twin, Esoteric, Ildjarn...

Siegbran (eofor), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 22:30 (twenty-two years ago)

how long is the orb's adventures beyond the ultraworld and is it pop enough to qualify?

gygax!, Wednesday, 15 January 2003 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Phish's Junta clocks in at a couple minutes over 2 hours. The original self-released cassette (in 1989, I think) ran a little under 90 minutes; the Elektra CD (released in 1992) added about 35 minutes worth of live material to the end.

Phil (phil), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 22:48 (twenty-two years ago)

How about the COMPLETE FUNHOUSE SESSIONS.....all six CD's (seven, if you count the bonus disc of the "1970" single mix and inexplicably keyboard-enhanced version of "Down on the Street") of it.?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 23:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Kurt Cobain hated Sadinista!" and prefered Nevermind The Bollocks..., which just goes to show what a fule he was.

I don´t know what a fule means but i guess it isn´t nice
But he liked The Raincoats, Daniel Johnston, Young marble giants, Vaselines etc....

Jens (brighter), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 23:29 (twenty-two years ago)

To second Ernest...

HALF JAPANESE -- HALF GENTLEMEN NOT BEASTS!!!

Ok, it is quite a difficult listen, but it is quite great.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 16 January 2003 00:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I would have mentioned Orb earlier if it qualified. Nope, it's about ten minutes short.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Thursday, 16 January 2003 00:42 (twenty-two years ago)

i'll second SAW II.

and are you allowed to mention the grateful dead around here?

hundred year hall is a damn fine album.

arjun (arjun), Thursday, 16 January 2003 03:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Siegbran: What Esoteric album is this? Is it still in print/their best? I've been meaning to get something of theirs.

original bgm, Thursday, 16 January 2003 03:59 (twenty-two years ago)

How long is Goldie's Timeless?

Although actually I own (and have only ever heard) the single-disc version and half suspect that the double CD is mine plus filler.

Paul in Santa Cruz (Paul in Santa Cruz), Thursday, 16 January 2003 04:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Sandinista too, but NeverMindTheBollocks is so so so much better (as are the Raincoats) 'tis too starved an argument for my pen.

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Thursday, 16 January 2003 04:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Do Wagner's operas count? the Ring cycle is like 14 discs, or even Tristan und Isolde = 4.
