Several versions of "Frontier Psychiatrist"?

I was at a friend's house and he had Since I Left You on, and when it got to "Frontier Psychiatrist", I was [fucking] shocked! It was completely different from my version. Almost all of the spoken word samples were different and it sounded like crap.

I think they re-recorded them themselves (they didn't sound very "vintage") and then scratched them using CD-Js, or they just laced the scratches around them.

But why would they do that? I can't believe they got into trouble, they can't be that well-known (those samples, I mean). And it was a fucking artistic crime.

He bought his copy a couple of months ago, I bought mine in August 2001 (I think). Anybody else heard these two versions? What's the deal?

The original Aussie version of Since I Left You is different to the version that came out in the UK and possibly later on down under in a fair few places, almost certainly due to sample clearance problems. In addition to the different vocals on Frontier Psychiatrist, there are no "outtamyway, I'm watching television", "are you crazy, that's the test pattern?!" sample on Radio... nor are there any flute samples over the top of the final track.

I prefer the original version.

the original uk version of the lp too has those samples,
it was only the 2001 re-release that didn't.
hearing 'radio' without them is a whole nother song.
the samples thru-out the lp were dead cleva and cool.

no the original one surely - it was released as a single with no sample problems in the UK right?

That REALLY confused me. I couldn't understand why the UK album version had rerecorded samples, but the single version had the proper versions despite the fact that the single came after the album. I assumed it might have something to do with a royalty clause but never found out the proper reason.

Ah. My version doesn't have those samples you mentioned, but it does have the "right" version of "Frontier Psychiatrist". I would really like to hear the original version, but I suppose it's pretty rare, right? (Wasn't there something with a Robert De Niro sample as well?)

No, there aren't any more samples, per say. But on the original version I downloaded, way before the album appeared in the UK, "that boy needs therapy" was delivered by one, deadpan sample. When I got round to buying it the following summer, all the vocal samples had been replaced by re-recorded ones, in much goofier voices.

Likewise, Extra Kings really misses the cascading flute sample that's laid over the top of it. Anyone know if its still possible to get my hands on a copy of the original?

hmmmm...i thought the 'boy needs therapy' sample was from Dexter's Lab tho yeh? so maybe they hadnt cleared the sample originally so just voiced it themselves?

and there is flute on the 'Extra Kings' on my copy...man this is confusing...i'll bring my mindisc copy next time i see you and you can tell me if its the original or not

i didnt buy a copy but copied it from a guy who did buy it in January 2001 and i assume this was the first official Uk release version

i dont have the dialogue bits from 'Radio' Matt pointed out tho, just the bits that sounds like 'sunning themselves, sunning themselves...' and 'sometimes you dont understand...' - zis is an outrage

clarification on the correct lyrics would be good too!
