Destiny's Child's songs would sound better sung by the band X

When listening to the Destiny's Child's "Bootylicious" I realized that I'd rather Exene was wooping it up on songs like "Emotion" rather than these psuedo-TLC psychos. Are there bands who you think would be benefited by John Doe or your personal favorite emoin' diva was singing? Normally I'd even want to keep the original music track and just change the vocals, so this is no Rotten's "My Way" dealy here.

"Survivor" with The Microphones on vox would be oddly cool.

gazuga (gazuga), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 19:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I've always wanted to hear John & Exene do "Take the Money & Run" by Steve Miller:

Doe: Billy Mack is a detective down in Texas, you know he knows just exactly what the facts is"
Ex: He aint gonna let those two (duet) escape justice
Ex: He makes his living off other peoples taxes
Doe: Bobby Sue ...
Ex: Billy Joe ...
Duet: They got the money , hey ...
Doe: Headed down south ...
Duet: Chorus

..Oh, I can just hear it.. Of course if they actually did it, I wouldn't want to listen... It wouldn't be as good as the way I'm imagining it...

a lot of the meaning of destiny's child songs depends pretty precisely on the rigour of their robo-diva songstyle: anyone with a looser, less maniacally disciplined fuck-it style, wouldn't be able get in half the layers, i don't think (destiny's child are way down the road TLC set off on, seeing as the latter are far too easily distracted by mere fun and pleasure)

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 19:33 (twenty-three years ago)

sorry, that should be "less maniacally disciplined, fuck-it style": i don't think DC have a "fuck-it" style, it's their pitiless application that i like

X should cover "Bonnie & Clyde '03" by Jay-Z & Beyonce.

In fact, I want them covering every hip-hop/R&B male/female duet. I'm Real, Warren G's & Anita Howard's What's Love Got To Do With It, C & C Music Factory's Everybody Dance Now...

ok, I'm getting silly.

But doesn't "U Got The Look" by Prince & Sheena Easton sound like the nuttiest X song ever?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 19:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Agreed, Mark. The Destiny's Child sound is so rigid and classicist; TLC on the other hand don't take themselves that seriously and it shows in the relaxed party-groove of their music. I prefer DC.

They'd do better with a rockabilly cover of the Roxette one.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 19:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Jody! You just rocked my world. I haven't thought about the Roxette track in ages. You TOTALLY rocked my VH1-Classic-rock addicted world. :)

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 19:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I got the title wrong, though. The Roxette song is "The Look." But it more or less is a Prince song (not that Prince song, but close), and Marie Fredriksson more or less is Sheena Easton (Scottish, Swedish, what's the diff?).

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 20:00 (twenty-three years ago)

actually though, I'd rather hear John Doe bark about the "World Series Of Love" and slammin' and jammin' than say "na na na na" ad naseum. Especially since "World Series Of Love" reminds me of the X-assisted "Major League" soundtrack.

I can hear the chorus done pedal-to-the-metal X style with John and Exene harmonizing, but the rest of it? I dunno.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 20:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I just realized "It Must Have Been Love" is a thoroughly Xian song, at least in sentiment. Right down to the americana words about water flowing and wind blowing. I don't know if the same can be said for "Joyride." "Dressed For Success" could be if X sang it ironically. They're from LA.

Hootie & the Blowfish should do a cover of "Bootylicious"

Curtis Stephens, Thursday, 16 January 2003 03:29 (twenty-three years ago)

X should cover Motley Crue's "Girls Girls Girls" ("At the dollhouse in Ft. Lauderdale /Girls, Girls, Girls/Rocking in Atlanta at Tattletails/Girls, Girls, Girls/Raising Hell at the 7th Veil"), since it has almost the same lyrics as "More Fun in the World." X should also cover Guns N Roses' "One in a Million" ("Police and Niggers, that's right/Get out of my way/Don't need to buy none of your Gold chains today...Immigrants and faggots/They make no sense to me/They come to our country/And think they'll do as they please/Like start some mini Iran/Or spread some fuckin' disease/They talk so many goddamn ways/It's all Greek to me"), since it has almost the same lyrics as "Los Angeles."

jerry curlan, Friday, 17 January 2003 00:41 (twenty-three years ago)

"More Fun in the World" = "More Fun in the New World". Unless I'm mixed up, and the song where the mentioned the Aorta Bar Detroit's Main Vein was "I Must Not Think Bad Thoughts" or something instead.

jerry curlan, Friday, 17 January 2003 00:43 (twenty-three years ago)

I think the Ex sound more like Destiny's Child than X do, though. (Though X sound more like Destiny's Child than the Australian band also called X). I forget what Brand X sound like. Ditto X Blank X.

jerry curlan, Friday, 17 January 2003 01:04 (twenty-three years ago)

X...as in Malcolm X the brand X the band X the X-Men including nightcrawler AND colossus...excalibur four star hotels...*bug eyes out, pause*

Darrell Hammond's Jesse Jackson impersonation rules.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 17 January 2003 01:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Destiny's Child should cover "Rated X" by Pat Benatar.

But who should cover "The Phone's Off the Hook, But You're Not Not"? Blu Cantrell, maybe?

B.Rad (Brad), Friday, 17 January 2003 02:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Through the magic of digital editing Serge Gainsboug.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 17 January 2003 14:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd love to hear them have a go at selected showtunes, especially the feisty ones, like "Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Better" from Annie Get Your Gun or "I Remember It Well" from Gigi or that "Let's Call the Whole Thing Off" ("you say to-ma-to, I say to-mah-to") song from Shall We Dance?. I can't imagine anybody's songs sounding better after being given the X treatment, though.

Jerry Curlan's suggestions are the best!
