Anyone hear Tricky's new stuff?

I heard his new single on the radio recently and its pretty good. It's even poppier than anything on Maxinquaye. Glen Tilbrook from Squeeze co-wrote it and Ed Kowalczyk from Live sings on it. Apparently Alanis Morrisette has a duet with Tricky on the new album as well.

i remember when i got juxtapose and i was complaining to my friend about all the strummy alt-rock guitar on it (it was supposed to be his hiphop album, for christ's sake!) and he said that he would think tricky and guitar would be more like isaac hayes or something instead of the creed shit i was stuck. so, what's wrong with him? why is he so boring rockist? was he always and i just didn't get it? i really like his first album, and about half of juxtapose (since i have the japanese import i get two great b-sides at the end which makes it better than the regular album), but i wish he could live up to his promise more. it was better when he was just doing weird tuneless shit that nobody wanted to hear, at least that didn't have the dumb-ass from live on it.

?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Wow, it's times like these I'm really glad I haven't kept up with what Tricky is doing lately. What, did Epitaph try nudging him into a sludgerock mainstream direction? Live and Morrissette are awful, and nothing would make me happier than to see the Cookie Monster barfing on them (hey, if Tricky does that on the album it might not be that bad). I love Tricky's early stuff, so I keep holding out the hope that he will produce something truly great again. So I hope the album is good...but stuff like Alanis duets makes me doubt it.

I agree w/Ethan, in that Tricky is probably one the biggest examples of all time of wasted potential.

Well, the new single is still trip-hop and not as rockist as you might suspect. I kinda like the way Tricky is collaborating with obviously uncool ppl. I quite like "Juxtapose" and if he wants to have guitars on his album why the hell not?

I intend to give the new stuff a chance (in fact I might try to track some down on Limewire later today), but you have to understand that when I hear Alanis and Ed whatshisface mentioned in the same breath I just involuntarily cringe. Alanis is so eeeevil in a boring corporate way.

Ethan - yes he always had rockist tendencies. Even 'Maxinquaye' had a sample from - trying to bring myself to utter their name - the fucking bastard SMASHING PUMPKINS. Live are just well-meaning dullards, but the Smashing Pumpkins are the only band and I have ever physically wanted to violently remove from Earth's surface.

I LOVED 'Nearly God' though. "Poems" tears me up.

I have a promo of the new album 'Blowback' and have listened through several times... On the whole, I'm pretty pleased. I really loved 'Angels with Dirty Faces' (I know I'm in the minority), though 'Juxtapose' was OK, and of course the "Mission: Accomplished" EP was, er, better left ignored. This record no longer feels like he's trying to stretch a few ideas out to 30-35 minutes (as on Juxtapose). The guest stars are lame (except for the Chili Peppers), but the good thing is they're unrecognizable - Alanis does backing vocals on the first track and you can't tell it's her, Ed Live doesn't really sound like Ed Live. He has a new female singer a la Martika, and a new reggae-voiced rapper who's on a half dozen of the songs - he may annoy some. On the whole, it's a little more poppy, but still definitely Tricky. I like it. Oh yeah, and if you've seen him live in the past few years, you may recognize a few songs. I saw him in Chicago on Thanksgiving '98, and remember a song that featured the phrase "Is that what you needed?" that appears on here as "Bury the Evidence." Good stuff.

three weeks pass...
Worst.album.of.the.year. No really, haven't heard something as bad as this in years. Boy did he lose it. Glad I didn't actually had to pay for my copy. Now I must destroy it before it starts messing up any memories I have of Tricky being actually being some sort of a dark prince. What a waste.

Aha! So I was right about this album...

Invariably, any sort of involvement with Alanis = unmusical wasteland. Why oh why didn't she just stick to "You can't do that on television"?

Nicole, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ooh ! Perhaps another record for my Strokes/Gorillaz buying list ?
