Ring! Ring!

I remember hearing a NASTY and CERTAINLY UNTRUE rumour years ago, that certain chart pop rekkids would have the sound of ringing telephones subliminally mixed in so that radio listeners would PAY ATTENTION when said pop thang would get played. Strangely enough, I would sometimes think I could hear the phone ringing when listening to singles. I'm sure I was just being suggestible, because OBVIOUSLY NO rekord kompany would ever resort to such nasty, cynical tactix...

Whilst producing charver cheese trance anthems w/DJ colin thee other week, though, he said a very, very curious thing - "I'm sure I can hear mobile phones ringing on some club 12"s"

Ooooooohhh....

Any stories? Anecdotal evidence? Hard evidence even?

Isn't there a phone ringing in a Roxy Music song?

And I always swear I hear my cell phone ringing at the end of the Ramones "You Should Never Have Opened that Door". Hardly the hard evidence you were looking for, but it's a true story. I've actually picked up my phone a couple time while listening to this. Can anyone back me up or am I crazy? Does anyone even listen to the Ramones?

There are LOADS of tracks that have sampled mobile phones. Super Furry Animals built a whole SONG (the insanely brilliant I Got A Mobile Phone) around ring-tones.

The last Primal Scream album started with a ring-tone. Every time I hear someone's phone go off on the tube, I think KLL LL PPS is about to start.

But... yeah. You've got a point. It's not even subliminal, but boy, does it make my attention perk up.

However, due to my having an absolutely RIDICULOUS ring-tone, I almost never do actually catch it when my own phone goes off. (All Tomorrows Parties by the VU. Yes, I *AM* that saaaaadddd!!!)

And yes I know cell phones weren't around back then, but something in that song really sounds like *my* ring.

Oh, and in the middle of "Tomorrow Never Knows" there is this harsh, almost electronic tone which sounds EXACTLY like the doorbell at my parents' house. You have no idea how many times I'd rush downstairs to see if I had visitors, and realise that I had been fooled again. Sigh.

I have a Cat Power CD that when I play at a loud level I'll go leaping for the phone. Nobody's on the line of course but one day she'll call, of this I am certain.

By the way, how do you get a VU ring?

Larms, Friday, 8 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Wait a sec, when the phone rings it plays VU?

I'm call waiting for the man.

If you have a Nokia, you sit with your guitar and your phone, and you program it yerself. ;-) I wanted the most atonal, dronerock ringtone I could find, and the most droney the "ringtone" places had was "Within You, Without You" by the Beatles. Which just sounded wrong.

We could be *really* obnoxious, and make this an NME-stylee quick spotcheck of who's got the most annoying ringtone... ;-)

masonic boom, Friday, 8 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ooh, don't bring that up. That's the definitely the worst concept for a feature that the NME has ever had.

The next thing you know they'll be asking people what kind of lipgloss they're wearing today, which come to think of it would be more interesting than the mobile questions.

Oh gawd! The NME's highly popular (joke) 'What's on your mobile phone' section.

>Ringtone: 'Disco Down' Shed Seven. >Txt Msg: "I thnk U R Gr8"

FOCK OFF!!

So am I the only one who turns down the music if I think the phone's ringing, rather than listening harder? My phone viBRATES.
