The Grodeck Whipperjenny - Classic or Absolute Classic?

So right, for so many reasons: heavy funk, psych guitar, great tunes, Dave Matthews (no, not that one!) and his voice that reminds me of Jimmy Scott, etc., etc.

this sounds AMAZING!

i found a review of it on blastitude http://www.blastitude.com/12/pg4A.htm

has this been reissued?

JasonD (JasonD), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 19:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah the Blastitude review is of the reish. The original's pricey, if you find it. The reish is available from www.dustygroove.com for $8.99.

(I can't believe only ONE person responded to this! What's wrong with you people that you don't know THE GRODECK WHIPPERJENNY but will spend all day long blathering on about the fucking Streets?!?!?!?)

hstencil, Tuesday, 21 January 2003 20:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I have the Whipperjenny lp. I only listened to it once, but I recall being really underwhelmed. I'm sure this had a lot to do w/ my expectations vs. the actual thing when I finally heard it. Like, "wow! white psych band records for People?! Gotta hear it!" Just seemed like another genre exercise and not all that acidic, recorded a few years after the dream had faded

I guess I should go back and listen more closely, forgetting some of that context.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 20:24 (twenty-three years ago)

white psych? I got the impression most of the participants were not white, but then again I know very little about it other than the LP itself. Not that it matters...

hstencil, Tuesday, 21 January 2003 20:34 (twenty-three years ago)

hmm.. I thought I had read that in some collector mag a while back. I definitely could be wrong on that, and you're right it doesn't matter musically but in my mind it increased the WTF? factor (record on People).

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 20:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Holy freaking heck, somebody else who's heard the Grodeck Whipperjenny?

It was indeed the first album that came out on People. The band also plays on James Brown's album _Sho Is Funky Down Here_, which is actually basically an instrumental Grodeck Whipperjenny album with James playing what sounds like a Roxxichord and occasionally grunting--it was rushed out to fulfill JB's contractual obligations to King, I'm told.

"Sitting Here On a Thumb" = slightly catchy but really retarded.

two months pass...
i finally picked this up and it's so completely what i needed right now. fits perfectly in my Black Acid Rock - S/D thread. stoned out funk. fuzzed guitar. lycergic lyrics. the psudo-classical section with the strings is great too.

my biggest compliant though is that girls voice. ick. but i'm warming up to it.

also last week i picked up the JB "Sho is Funky Down Here" and it too is amazing, but sadly my copy was warped and i had to return it.

JasonD (JasonD), Thursday, 17 April 2003 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

The Grodeck Whipperjenny is highly sought after by the crate diggers and vinyl heads because of the JB connection.

I haven't heard it yet. It couldn't be as good as Maggot Brain though.

Dave Matthews' Dune on the CTI label is also noteworthy.

Cub, Thursday, 17 April 2003 20:03 (twenty-two years ago)

it's not as good as Maggot Brain. is anything?

JasonD (JasonD), Thursday, 17 April 2003 20:18 (twenty-two years ago)

that girl's voice?

Douglas, the song is called "Sitting Here On a Tongue," and you are wrong, it rules.

hstencil, Thursday, 17 April 2003 20:20 (twenty-two years ago)

The Trinity:

There's A Riot Goin' On
Let's Get It On
Maggot Brain

Cub, Thursday, 17 April 2003 20:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Trinity of obviousness?

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 17 April 2003 20:26 (twenty-two years ago)

that girl's voice?

yeah, her name's Mary Ellen Bell. listed on the back as vocals

JasonD (JasonD), Thursday, 17 April 2003 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I must be insane cuz I don't remember there being a girl's voice on the record, except in maybe some choruses.

hstencil, Thursday, 17 April 2003 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

the other person listed for vocals is Kenny Doole. d.matthews is just credited with piano, organ and trombone.

JasonD (JasonD), Thursday, 17 April 2003 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

she sings lead on "Evidence for the Existance of the Unconscious", "Wonder If", "Why can't i go back", and "You're too Young"

JasonD (JasonD), Thursday, 17 April 2003 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought that was a man.

hstencil, Thursday, 17 April 2003 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

haha. just like you thought that was a girl last night at the bar.

JasonD (JasonD), Thursday, 17 April 2003 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, Mr. Diamond, they are obviously the 3 greatest classics that should be in every pop collection. Along with Al Green's Greatest Hits.

Cub, Thursday, 17 April 2003 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, was that you?

hstencil, Thursday, 17 April 2003 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

it was me!

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 17 April 2003 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

after you left the stage?

hstencil, Thursday, 17 April 2003 20:58 (twenty-two years ago)

allright, I just ordered this album from Dusty Groove. It better be fucking good, or I'm comin after you Hstencil!

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 17 April 2003 21:05 (twenty-two years ago)

It's better than the fucking Streets, that's for sure.

hstencil, Thursday, 17 April 2003 22:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never heard the Streets (and have no real desire to either). Sounds to me like just another case of Brits being excited that they have a homegrown rapper (cf. Tricky, Stereo MCs, etc.)

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 17 April 2003 22:51 (twenty-two years ago)

six months pass...
anyone know if the CD reissue of this album has heaps of exciting bonus tracks? or should i just drop $9 on the vinyl reissue?

your null fame (yournullfame), Saturday, 15 November 2003 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

if it's the radioactive records cd then i think it's the same.i remember seeing a blurb about their release and it said 8 tracks which is the same as the album version. so buy the vinyl. it's cheap. the cd is really expensive. um, but don't quote me on anything cuz i my memory is faulty. maybe search for radioactive+grodeck whipperjenny or something.

scott seward, Saturday, 15 November 2003 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

bleh, turned out it was "the secret second album" = "sho nuff is funky down here." think i'll just get the james brown version, it's cheaper.
