there are loads of them on soulseek - any suggestions as to which ones to get?

toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 09:52 (twenty-two years ago) link

Much as I love Miss Kittin and the Hacker, I have only heard the one DJ set she's done, the Electroclash free CD with Muzik mag.... it'd be interesting to hear others, though. I'd say - go for as many as possible - they're probably all great.

russ t, Wednesday, 22 January 2003 10:23 (twenty-two years ago) link

yeah the muzik cd was fairly good, but i've never heard the others...

robin (robin), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 10:30 (twenty-two years ago) link

i've got the one that came with the notorious Vitalic mix and its pretty cool, she/they play Felix's 'Don't You Want My Love' which was a bit of a turn-up...can't remember much about the rest of it tho

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 11:20 (twenty-two years ago) link

heard her play out in manchester when she finished the night off at the royksopp do. a bit uninspiring really but, listening to the muzik cd, it could have just been one of those nights.

michael wells (michael w.), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 11:23 (twenty-two years ago) link

She seems a bit of a wanker, too, actually - always dissing the Brits, saying how far we are behind Germany blah blah blah.

It's high time 'Frank Sinatra' was remixed, edited, and re-released, though. An absolutely storming, seminal record. And it sounds awesome in a club.

russ t, Wednesday, 22 January 2003 11:53 (twenty-two years ago) link

the time I saw here she was the most uninspired self aggrandising dj I've ever seen. basically mixed up dull remixes of the tracks she sings on for about 45 minutes then played dull dull dull techno for another 45. and shes an arsehole.

simon 803 (simon 803), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 12:43 (twenty-two years ago) link

word simon! i've heard her twice and it was dull as ditchwater. she is less than friendly and just about thee moodiest dj i have ever met. dud!!

stirmonster, Wednesday, 22 January 2003 12:47 (twenty-two years ago) link

i thought frank sinatra had been rereleased, remixed, etc numerous times already,no?
it was fairly difficult to get away from for a few months a while ago...

robin (robin), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 13:21 (twenty-two years ago) link

Did you see Tom Middleton in the end that night Michael? How was he?

I thought Miss Kittin was interesting on Kittenz and Thee Glitz but descended into self parody after a while, I guess like most of the electroclash stuff seems to have done.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 13:25 (twenty-two years ago) link

always dissing the Brits, saying how far we are behind Germany

Surely she has a point, especially re: everything techno/electro?

descended into self parody after a while, I guess like most of the electroclash stuff seems to have done

But that's the whole idea, isn't it?

Siegbran (eofor), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 14:12 (twenty-two years ago) link

tom middleton was excellent, ronan. he came on a few times between the other sets and played some good techy stuff (take me harder, the octave one remix of inner city's big fun, sunglasses at night, er, i forget the rest it was a while ago) before banging out the booties (smells like booty, beastie's intergalactic w/ something else) and stuff like roots manuva. it worked in the context of the night. royksopp were surprisingly excellent, too.

michael wells (michael w.), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 14:24 (twenty-two years ago) link

Intergalactic with INXS? I liked that one.

How do you mean Siegbran?

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 15:57 (twenty-two years ago) link

always dissing the Brits, saying how far we are behind Germany
Surely she has a point, especially re: everything techno/electro?

not FAR behind i'd say...its not really advanced music conceptually (sonically perhaps but then again so much of it is minimal, not even minimal complex/intricate) - but Germany's where the most activity in the field now is so fair enough

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 16:18 (twenty-two years ago) link

'Stock Exchange Woman' from 'First Album' is coming out on Feb 10th with a weirdy low-fi guitar mix from Adamski (although using the name Adam Sky) on the b-side.

Kittin has a mix album coming out soonish. I'll give you a copy when I get hold of it Toby.

I'd argue against Kittin and the Hacker being self-parody. I know K's become the by word for sick of it all Euro-trash vocals, but I think that's mainly down to poor imitators.

I've only seen her play once and I thought she was very good. This was early March. It was the first time I'd heard 'Ripping Kittin' and she managed to get a load of fashion-y too cool for school people dancing to 'Satr Guitar.'

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 16:21 (twenty-two years ago) link

i would argue that the whole of electroclash is parody. pastiche at least...the idea of theatre etc. i think this is a good thing

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 16:34 (twenty-two years ago) link

I'm not sure what I meant then, perhaps I was too ambitious in my criticism by using the phrase "self parody". Maybe I should have said Futurism 1 was interesting and pretty good and it sounded 80s in kind of a nice way, it also had some attitude and pretentiousness to it which was sorely missing from lots of electronic music, Futurism 2 on the other hand, begins with the worst song I've ever heard by the Parallax Corporation. CD2 is that unplayable fun size techno stuff that was fun when Adult did it with Hand to Phone but now just makes me grind my teeth.

I think my problem is I always asserted it was the music I liked in electroclash through the long debates here and not the image particularly and now that I feel the music has dipped in quality or at least moved away from what I found interesting in the first place I am increasingly annoyed by the rest of the schtick.

To be honest a significant factor behind this is that I am completely useless at "getting" any non obvious electronic music, so the electroclash that has moved towards IDM a bit is totally lost on me.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 16:43 (twenty-two years ago) link

Oh yes. To steal a line from my bf, there are too many copy cats who think that a good 'electroclash' song means cheap synths with some girl chanting "i left my bad panties in the departure lounge"...

I *really* hate the song that consists of "I want to be... a porno star" over and over. Isn't that on Futurism? Can't remember who it's by. Ugh. Could it be any more hoxtonmulletesque? S'all gone a bit yawn.

There is some hope though. What I've heard of the Tok Tok vs. Soffy O album sounds really fresh - "jean" even sounds like Dead or Alive!

elisabeth k, Wednesday, 22 January 2003 16:51 (twenty-two years ago) link

Dead or Alive - have you seen they're re-releasing You Spin Me Round again? Fab remixes (I heard one, but was a bit wrecked to notice too much)....and another Best of.... Spin me round is still one of the definitive records of the 80s, I think. Pete Burns, though - ARGHHH!

russ t, Wednesday, 22 January 2003 17:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

haha elisabeth, thats Dopplerefekt (is that on futurism? i know its on american gigolo but...)

anyway, thats GREAT! the album is really good too. in fact, that album might be my favourite out of all this bizness

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 17:20 (twenty-two years ago) link

Heard her play out in Manchester too, her top bollocks were more inspiring than anything she dropped, dropped is too strong a word, laid down on the mat without emotion would be more apt.

Macattack (Macattack), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 17:32 (twenty-two years ago) link

Gareth -
I love American Gigolo, too.
Best tracks for me are You Prefer Cocaine by Vitalic (but they don't play enough of it) and the Marc Almond 'Soul on soul' track.
All the International DJ Gigolo albums are pretty special, though - and if you have a Fopp record shop near you, they're all in there reasonably cheap at the mo.

russ t, Wednesday, 22 January 2003 18:03 (twenty-two years ago) link

and if you have a Fopp record shop near you, they're all in there reasonably cheap at the mo.

a sure sign that the bandwagon is over.

stirmonster, Wednesday, 22 January 2003 18:19 (twenty-two years ago) link

Don't be such a boring, naff elitist child, stirmonster.

Fopp's a fantastic shop.

russ t, Wednesday, 22 January 2003 18:24 (twenty-two years ago) link

huh?

i mean that obviously there is now a warehouse full of overstocks of gigolo records that fopp has bought cheap.

suck on that and swivel ya mumping git.

stirmonster, Wednesday, 22 January 2003 18:30 (twenty-two years ago) link

but, fyi, fopp was a fantastic record shop. now it's a dvd / book shop.

stirmonster, Wednesday, 22 January 2003 18:32 (twenty-two years ago) link

Yeah, that "I want to be a porno star" line is on American Gigolo, not Futurism.

That "I left my bad panties..." line was actually in the Guardian. Elisabeth flatters me by giving me credit for it.

Tag, Wednesday, 22 January 2003 18:47 (twenty-two years ago) link

Liz is so right about "Jean." (Liz since I'm already talking about Ural 13 Diktators today look for their "Aerojamit," which actually shares loops with "Jean," but in a more straight-out Hi-NRG pulse kind of way.)

Ronan I've not heard Futurism 2 but I think Parallax Corporation, when they're bad, are really bad and thus the idea of their "worst" track gives me the fear. I just finished up a review of Cocadisco and it occurs to me that I/F's head is the size of a small planet at this point. (NB contrary to that sentence above I think Cocadisco is mostly solid and functional)

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 18:55 (twenty-two years ago) link

when i said it was a great album, i meant the Dopplereffekt album from which that track comes...although american gigolo is quite good too

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 19:19 (twenty-two years ago) link

That was uncalled-for, russ t, it's hard to see how he's wrong there - one might even get the impression you've some sort of personal stake in this record chain?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 19:28 (twenty-two years ago) link

I saw her DJ this summer in Amsterdam and she was great. Great soulful Detroit electro, "Afrogermanic", Kraftwerk, "Rippin Kittin", a very strange cover version of "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" and...erm..."Firestarter".

Omar (Omar), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 19:59 (twenty-two years ago) link

Kittin has a mix album coming out soonish. I'll give you a copy when I get hold of it Toby.

thanks anna! you're a star.

i think gareth is otm re: idea of theatre etc. also i totally don't understand this kittin-hating (not perhaps on this thread, but elsewhere on ilm); yesyes she's doing bored germanic vocals, but no-one seems to be able to point out who she's ripping off/why she's a "self-parody" now/what's so wrong with bored germanic vocals anyway.

(i am rather tipsy so apologies if this makes no sense.)

toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 22:59 (twenty-two years ago) link

Ah I don't hate her, I just am bored of it, self parody was probably a leap too far to be honest, I explain myself a bit better in the second post.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 23:10 (twenty-two years ago) link

she was ALWAYS a self-parody; she was in on her vacuousness the whole time; it is silly to slam her for that but it's equally silly to say she's not that

"um, is it the break? / i'm supposed to talk on this part, but what should i say? / i just don't know what to do / don't know what you want me to / should i talk about music? should i talk about drugs? / cars, girls, or parties? / i should talk about something, i know / what do you think about this track? / do you think we should dig in it, or do you prefer me to find another topic?"

she sort of obsoleted herself from the get-go, which i think is spectacular

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 23:49 (twenty-two years ago) link

But Tracer those lines are umm a searing crystallization of the existential crisis of the central-European electro diva!

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 23:52 (twenty-two years ago) link

Tracer - I can't recall directing any of my messages at you. Are you a headmistress?

Fopp still IS a great record shop - if you care to look, there's a massive vinyl section there - well, there is in the Bristol shop, anyway, apparently not in the Bath one, though. And no, I have no personal stake in the company. I wish.

And books and DVDs.... cool.

RADIO CAROLINE

nick.K (nick.K), Thursday, 23 January 2003 11:53 (twenty-two years ago) link

Actually Nabisco the Parallax Corporation song is called "Fear" which may be appropriate.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 23 January 2003 12:31 (twenty-two years ago) link

Ooo, Ronan, that one's on Cocadisco and I don't mind it. It really has no business being mixed into a whole set but it's sort of welcome in the context of the full-length.

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:28 (twenty-two years ago) link

I think as the first song on the first disc it's a bit shocking, my brain wasn't ready to go with them just yet and it didn't go any good.

The songs I like on Futurism are

Daniel Diamond-Champu (cos it's house)
Colorsound-Fly With Me (also house)
Arthur Argent-Hold Your Head Up (soulwax remix) (also housey)

And some other ones I can't remember cos I don't have the box handy.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:30 (twenty-two years ago) link

you're right russ t - stirmonster responded first and best. i just don't like the tone.

three years pass...
I'm just listening to the new Miss Kittin-Mix "A Bugged Out Mix", due to come out in mid-April. And it's one of the best Mix-CDs I've heard in a long, long time:
That's the tracklisting:
CD1
Si Begg: Sing #3 (that's good)
Wagon Christ: Shadows
Monolake: Invisible
Baby Ford: Normal (is this normal?)
Donato Dozzy & Brando Lupi: Metal Slave
Saint Etienne: Heart Failed (Two Lone Swordsmen Mix)
Jay Haze: Groove
Richard Devine: Untitled A1
Le Car: Aluminium Rectangles
Curve: Falling Free (Aphex Twin Mix)
Toasty: The Knowledge
Artwork: Rank
a/b featuring MC Soom-t: Another Level
Concept 1: 08:00
Sixtoo: Transfer Please, Perfect Wednesday
Villalobos: Easy Lee (Cassy Lee Mix)
Static: Inside Your Heaven
Biosphere: Le Grand Dome
Twine: Kalea Morning
Christ: Medulla Oblangata

And CD 2:
Princess Superstar: Perfect (Acapella)
DJ K: Plastic People
El Loco: Ibiza
Cajmere: Percolator (Keep Movin Mix)
Armando: 151 (Terrace Mix)
Misc: Vakuum Audio
My My: Serpentine
Female vs Regis: Avon 1 (James Ruskin Mix)
Adam Beyer: A Walking Contradiction (Part 1)
Fixmer/McCarthy: Freefall (Hacker Remix)
Chemical Brothers: Base 6
Drexiya: Lost Vessel
Perspects: 13 (in 2 Parts)
GE & GM: Seven Eleven
Modeselektor: Hasir
Mike Ink: Paroles (original)
Awesome 3: Dont Go (Kicks Like A Mule Mix)
Front 242: First In, First Out
DJ Maxximus & Something J: Destiny
Squarepusher: My Red Hot Car
Acresome: Perfect Girl

Maybe it's the other way around: the sleeve of my copy says CD 1 is supposed to be the "Perfect Night" and CD 2 the "Perfect Day". On the CDs it's the other way around. Never mind: they're both awesome. And how difficult is it to define night and day exactly. I'd say CD 2 is the saturday 4am mix, CD 2 the sunday 11 am mix.

But the beginning of CD 1, when this Wagon Christ track blends over into Monolake and it gets a bit darker when it comes to Baby Ford, then way darker when this Donato Dozzy thing kicks in is so awesome: and when out of somewhere far away Sarah Cracknells voice starts so sing - easily one of the most beautiful 15 minutes I heard in a long time. Or this great trance thing "Ibiza": yes! And then Misc being blended in this tricky My My tune. Beautiful. And then Mike Ink's Paroles and the Awesome 3: Hey, Breakbeats! That's Techno too!

Great CD, especially because it has such a broad range of styles. Without ever being eclectic.

Here are a few (RealAudio) streams of Ms K DJ sets when she used to fill in at a ladies' DJ show back in 1999/2000 for my Internet radio.

http://www.basic.ch/ram/expr000518.ram 1:30
http://www.basic.ch/ram/expr990722.ram 1:00
http://www.basic.ch/ram/fuel981229.ram 3:45

Yes that one's almost 4 hours long, from 1998 - encoding quality is below average as a result, it's a 20kb/s stream - recorded at the Fuel Cafe which used to be just below the station. It's very good, she's having fun.

eighteen years pass...

I couldn't find a good upload of the all-time classic Muzik cover CD mix, they all had these tiny but very annoying gaps between tracks, so fixed up a version myself, enjoy!
