i went to a record store in town that i'd never been to before. turns out they had good used vinyl. i managed to pick up the following curios in great shape for $24 canadian.

  • new order - shellshock (12")
  • seam - are you driving me crazy (lp)
  • rome - rome (lp)
  • madness - it must be love (7")
  • lou barlow and friends - another collection of home recordings (2x7")

  • first thoughts: the rome lp is something on thrill jockey -- apparently they only released the one. i can't seem to make up my mind whether i like it better at 33rpm or 45rpm (or if it really makes a difference).

the madness single looked so sad and forlorn in its lipstick-or-blood-stained sleeve i had to rescue it. it was only $1 and i love it.

the seam lp is really neat -- kind of "proto-emo" but i think the guy's voice is really cool, somewhere between ira kaplan and dan matz. i remember why i liked it back in the day.

I used to like that Seam album a lot too.

    Rome - total dud.

That Seam album's all right, but I like Headsparks better. But really, pick up some Bitch Magnet.

i actually quite like the rome album, beats the shit out of tortoise any day. not that that's saying much. but it's a nice kind of kitsch krautrock meets dub vibe that can be quite pleasant when in the right mood.

they also did a 12" for "beware soul snatchers" on thrill jockey, which i remember really liking a lot.

i had trouble with the seam album prior to that one and this one i've only listened to several times.

headsparks is my favorite, some of my favorite indie drumming outside of the gary young era in pavement. the codeine cover of "new years" does not compare, doug scharin is a much better guitarist.

the kernel 2x7" is awesome (future tortoises bundy k. brown and john mcentire on guitar/drums)... the cover of breaking circus' "driving the dynamite truck" from the Great Sounds of The Midwest Vol. 3 is maybe the best thing they ever did.

How many times do I have to tell you about this?!?!?!? Cover versions of the same song are allowed to be different from each other.

Bundy K. "You Can Call Me Ken" Brown and John McEntire were in Tortoise before Kernel was released.

"Driving the Dynamite Truck" is also from a Breaking Circus EP, but I can't remember the name of it.

i'm actually kind of liking it ... i can't get over playing the entire first side at 45rpm without realizing it, though. for some reason rome makes me think of an american lo-fi version of radian.

doug scharin is a much better guitarist.

doug scharin was the drummer. he was hired because he was the only one who auditioned who could play sloooooooooooow enough.

Not on "New Year's" or the rest of the Frigid Stars LP. That's Chris "gygax!-thinks-I-can't-play-drums-because-Steve-asked-me-to-play-slow-because-that's-our-aesthetic-and-gygax!-doesn't-understand-that-hell-I-even-played-with-G.G.-Allin-for-a-month-in-1986-with-Gerard-Cosloy-so-I-can-totally-play-fast-for-chrissakes" Brokaw.

haha, talk about a joke backfiring (combined with mental misstep)...

fos, hstencil knows what i meant...

okay, no more from me until i get something to eat/drink.

i like codeine and slow drumming, but chris is a better guitarist.

seam = the granny 9x and days of thunder 7"s are also really good.

    gygax!, Wednesday, 22 January 2003 19:00 (twenty-three years ago)

    Second those Seam 7" recommendations.

gygax!, how about you just say "I like Chris's guitar playing better" than what you've been saying?

    hstencil, Wednesday, 22 January 2003 19:10 (twenty-three years ago)

because i like david grubbs better in bitch magnet than in bastro (gastr too!?!)

and yet his last two DC albums are really cool.

    gygax!, Wednesday, 22 January 2003 19:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think Dave ever was on a Bitch Magnet recording, just subbed for Jon Fine live (not sure if that was for both of the times Jon got kicked out of the band).

    hstencil, Wednesday, 22 January 2003 19:20 (twenty-three years ago)

he's on the first EP, isn't he?

i'm in a strange universe today.

    gygax!, Wednesday, 22 January 2003 19:25 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think so, but then again it's been ages since I've seen Star Booty. You could be right.

Hey, you're in a strange universe, I'm being attacked by Chuck Eddy and jess on other threads. Just another day...

    hstencil, Wednesday, 22 January 2003 19:26 (twenty-three years ago)

okay, i checked... he's on star booty and umber.

    gygax!, Wednesday, 22 January 2003 19:36 (twenty-three years ago)

now that I think of it, I guess there was a Dave credited with guitar on Umber.

    hstencil, Wednesday, 22 January 2003 20:15 (twenty-three years ago)

    Ben Hur, anyone, anyone

    brg30 (brg30), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 23:09 (twenty-three years ago)

rules, but I don't remember Grubbs's name on the credits for that, either.
