I've had piercing tinnitus in my right ear for about two years because of it. Turn it down.

yes, turn it down. you are probably doing more damage with headphones than you ever will by seeing live music or going to clubs..

What is really stupid is that, as a kid, I used to listen to headphones while I mowed lawns. Yes, that's right, I had the headphone volume all the way at max so that I could drown out the sound of the lawnmower (which is itself probably right below a jet engine on the decibel-meter).

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 23 January 2003 01:51 (twenty-two years ago)

"I used to listen to headphones while I mowed lawns".

So did I, actually. And the problem with tinnitus is that it's the result of cumulative and, at this point, irreversible damage.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 23 January 2003 01:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Meaning that since I foolishly engaged in the same activity as Mr.Diamond as a kid (I distinctly remember listening to STOP MAKING SENSE while mowing the lawn of the group house I was staying at out in Long Island in the mid-80s), it was another contributing factor and gradual step towards the problem I now live with (a perpetual, tea-kettle whistle in my right ear). I also wore headphones seven days a week, with the volume all the way up all the time.......like an idiot. Don't follow my mistake.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 23 January 2003 01:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I also can distinctly remember the tapes I was listening to while mowing on a couple of occasions! In my case it was the Beatles Rock & Roll Music collections and the MC5 Kick Out the Jams. I'm sure the latter contributed to the (somewhat minor but persistent) tinnitus I now experience.

It ain't a good idea. The problem is one of a difference in air pressure between your inner ear and the rest of your ear / nose / throat. Loud music at clubs or whatever doesn't give you the problem, it's more to do with having the air passage into your ear blocked combined with the vibrations going on. It ends up tangling the little hairs that do your hearing for you and they can't be untangled.

if i hav been doing this wit varying consistency for around two yrs, am i already fukd?

naked as sin (naked as sin), Thursday, 23 January 2003 02:39 (twenty-two years ago)

i've had quite a bit of damage done to my hearing by going to nightclubs. but i agree with everyone about the perils of headphones. i used to go all volume happy with mine! i think the biggest problem is that most of the time, you don't notice it's *that* high, so you keep turning it up.

computer noise will destroy us all

this thread has worried the sh*t outta me.
i listen to headphones very loudly,
and louder and louder as i get older and older.

Here's a handy hint: NEVER, EVER use those little headphones that sit inside your ear. I stopped using them about 5 years ago. Buy a pair that sit on your ears, and keep them at a reasonable volume.

Andrew (enneff), Friday, 24 January 2003 11:34 (twenty-two years ago)

i use those little headphones. and generally on maximum volume. it can be very hard to hear the music clearly when I'm on trains and buses, which is when i do most of my walkman listening. i should probably turn it down, all the same.

i don't believe i have my headphones especially loud, but i do listen to music on them for many hours per day - i hardly listen on speakers any more - and i can't sleep any more unless i have foam earplugs in, so i end up wearing them all night every night (always suspected this was a bad habit but it's one which has stuck and didn't seem urgent enough to go through a week or so with no sleep to get over it). are these very bad things?

(actually i suppose my ears have been kind of weird lately, agh, but i assumed it was just the start of a cold messing with my sinuses or something. aaaagghhh)

yeah the cold confusion destroys yr perception/

I wear foam earplugs every night as well. I've never heard there are supposed to be any ill effects from it. Are there?!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Saturday, 25 January 2003 03:50 (twenty-two years ago)

My headphones leak sound like hell... Any other kind hurts my ears, even when I'm not listening to anything.

Curtis Stephens, Saturday, 25 January 2003 03:53 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
"I wear foam earplugs every night as well. I've never heard there are supposed to be any ill effects from it. Are there?!"

I remember reading an article about how, for each X minutes with earplugs, the number of bacteria in your ears doubles. And that number of minutes was quite low...

So I guess that sleeping with them can't be good and could lead to infections of varying seriousness (some you might notice, some not).

Is loud volume an addiction or sumthin? Don't fret over your
future hearing problems - just turn it down. Learn to live
with background noise - I've noticed that I like walking
around listening to music on thin headphones that let
outside sounds bleed in - it's kinda like having a soundtrack
to life. Try it! _The Final Cut_ is great for this.

seven years pass...

I stopped wearing my Grado's (and listening to music on my computer at all, really) for about a week, and when I returned I noticed my ears felt a little bit sore after the first day, and really whenever I wear them for more than an hour or two at a time now.

But I'm not sure if it's the Grado SR-60s uncomfortableness on my ears (that was a major problem I had with these when I first wore them) that's come back, or if it's my actual hearing that is sore -- that my ears had grown used to abuse and now they're re-sensitized.

Any one have any rules or guidelines for listening to music on headphones like that? I've always tried to be really careful and listen to music at lower volumes.

Cunga, Tuesday, 17 August 2010 21:51 (fourteen years ago)

Grados ate notoriously bright sounding, with harsh treble, which fatigues you to listen. I got read if mine after a few months and got some Alessandros.

Captain Ostensible (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 17 August 2010 21:54 (fourteen years ago)

I've been meaning to get something else for a while. Is the fatigue related to, or can it easily cause, any sort of hearing damage? It seems like I'd grown so used to them that after a week with them off I've grown re-acquainted with how uncomfortable a hug they give my ears.
