It's a pizza with everything on it, except for tomato sauce and cheese. Classic, I say.

it's alright. they get kind of uppity for a website that was originally devoted to meat beat manifesto.

Jot your pizza line is marvellous and is exactly why I don't like some music sites!

two years pass...
the end of the brain

Next week will be the last issue of The Brain. The Brain began eight years ago in August as a little place where Brainwashed staff members could keep tabs on each other: update the news section if there was any news about the bands whose websites they manage; write a few words about music or movies or books they've just experienced; and share emails with each other that are either amusing or ask questions which weren't already answered. Over time it built up, adding numerous features and sections. We were one of (if not) the first publications to post a new release schedule each week, we were one of (if not) the first to include sound samples with reviews, we were one of (if not) the first to outright ban major labels, and we were one of (if not) the first to feature a weekly video component. Out of all the trendiest big electronic publications, we arguably have had some of the most innovative music first, beating the trendiest trendsetters to the punch on bands like Dresden Dolls, Antony and the Johnsons, Sigur Ros, Gosdpeed You Black Emperor!, and Múm, just to name a few. Monday mornings will never be the same. Comments and feedback are welcome, and we'll be happy to post them in the final issue next week. Please include your name and city/country if you'd like them to be published. Thanks for your attention.

The Brain was always late and often wrong, but I'll really miss the sound samples.

haha, that'd be a perfect epitaph

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Monday, 18 July 2005 08:57 (twenty years ago)

And there was a real asshole that ran it that kept calling a friend of man "queer" and "faggot" because he was gay, not as a random insult. He didn't like what he had to say about music and continually banned him, saying, "Can't you take a hint, you faggot? Nobody wants to read your queer shit here."

After that, we spammed the board like teenagers under the name EllisDiva (the "queer's" name), spoofing IP's left and right. Like we do to ILX when it gets uppity, just basically flooding the board with "faggot"-ness. I think someone hacked it and broke it, but I can't recall.

ah i remember that flooding incident on the bw board. started with a calum-like troll who would go on about selling his brainwashed comp on ebay or something. whitney got pissed off, the troll started spamming the board under various guises, then whitney closed the place down. when was that, 2002? anyway, good times

fe zaffe (fezaffe), Monday, 18 July 2005 11:16 (twenty years ago)

i used to read the board around that time too. wasn't the troll going on and on about butthole surfers too?

i liked the eye weekly video though.

Jon Whitney's reply to someone's question about the end of The Brain on the Coil mailing list earlier today:

the brain is going away,...
the reviews, the eye, the news, and all other contents aren't

stay tuned

;)

thanks for your support!

Hold the epitaphs and let's see what they've got in mind.

Updated:

we're not saying goodbye

No, last week's announcement wasn't a joke: this is the last issue of The Brain, however, we will launch a brand new Brainwashed on August 1st. The reviews are not going away, The Eye is not going away, Links of the Week are not going away, the poll isn't going away, site news and tour dates and new releases are not going away—only The Brain is. Everybody at Brainwashed is excited about the new format and system and think it can only be the beginning of a steady slope of more improvements. We're too dedicated to music to pack things up and quit! Thanks for all of your support. We're inviting you to come back August 1st to see the new digs.
