Perhaps even great than the film that spawned it?

Iggy's title track (featuring all members of Chequered Past save Michael DesBarres...who invariably wasn't missed), classic hardcore anthems from Black Flag, Suicidal Tendencies, Fear and the Cirlce Jerks (plus a must-have acoustic rendition of "When the Shit Hits the Fan" by same), sound truly eclectic stuff by the Plugz (three tracks, not one of them similar to the last), plus the bizarro-world blaxploitation think piece by Juicy Bananas. Possibly the greatest soundtrack of all time???

You decide.

greatER than the film that spawned it, I mean.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 26 January 2003 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Classic. Duh!

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 26 January 2003 23:00 (twenty-two years ago)

When Emelio Estivez walked into the bike rental shop where I was working, I told him that between him and his father, his family had made a two of the greatest movies of all time: Apocalypse Now and Repo Man. He sort of laughed and said he didn't know if Repo Man should be compared to Apocalypse Now.

But they both have great soundtracks. And both fall apart at the end. (Having watched Repo Man many times, I've come to realize that it completely stops making sense at around the hospital scene.)

Then an hour later, Martin Sheen walked in to drop off the bikes his son had rented, and told me I was full of shit. (Well, not in so many words.)

Pete Scholtes, Monday, 27 January 2003 00:02 (twenty-two years ago)

You're making that up!

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 27 January 2003 00:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Meeting the star of a car stealing film at a bicycle rental company... that's too much. Never mind. Film, soundtrack, anecdote, all classickowitz.

jot eff pe, Monday, 27 January 2003 00:25 (twenty-two years ago)

At least you didn't try to claim a trifecta by including Joe Estevez and mentioning Werewolf or Soultaker.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 27 January 2003 04:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Classic. But not better than the film for my tastes.

Joe Estevez got such a thrashing from MST3K that I can't help but feel sorry for the guy.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 27 January 2003 04:36 (twenty-two years ago)

the movie - classic
the soundtrack - classic
quoting the movie - classic
sushi - classic

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 27 January 2003 04:40 (twenty-two years ago)

did anyone else ever see the version of Repo Man i saw on late night TV once? All of the swearing (and there is a lot, of course) was dubbed out with words like "flip you!" and "you melonfarmer!". Quite strange. Sometimes I wonder if i dreamed it.

Oh, the soundtrack is a classic and one of the best, but the film is even beter, yes.

pauls00, Monday, 27 January 2003 04:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, I've seen this! Many years ago and it was probably the first time I'd ever seen the movie. It was on A&E I believe, being presented as some kind of American cinema cult classic. Maybe...

Anyway, the soundtrack is classic for "TV Party" alone. And it came with my dvd!

original bgm, Monday, 27 January 2003 04:49 (twenty-two years ago)

did you get the supa dupa fly version with the license plate case, etc.?

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 27 January 2003 04:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Yup yup, found it for $20 which I thought was nice. I like the comic that comes with.

original bgm, Monday, 27 January 2003 05:07 (twenty-two years ago)

ron (ron), Monday, 27 January 2003 06:44 (twenty-two years ago)

greatER than the film that spawned it, I mean.

Impossible. I quite like the soundtrack but the film is GRATEly classick. I love the packaging for the DVD.

nathalie (nathalie), Monday, 27 January 2003 06:58 (twenty-two years ago)

A wonderful synthesis of classicism and classic-ness.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Monday, 27 January 2003 07:19 (twenty-two years ago)

melonfarmer=classic

weatheringdaleson (weatheringdaleson), Monday, 27 January 2003 09:47 (twenty-two years ago)

"did anyone else ever see the version of Repo Man i saw on late night TV once? All of the swearing (and there is a lot, of course) was dubbed out with words like "flip you!" and "you melonfarmer!". Quite strange. Sometimes I wonder if i dreamed it."

There's also a non-sweary version of Robocop I hear, featuring "blaggard!" and "you buddyfunster!"

Philip Alderman (Phil A), Monday, 27 January 2003 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I once saw Predator with this dubbed in: "You're one ugly mother-fudgie!" (!!!)

original bgm, Monday, 27 January 2003 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I would say that (with a few exceptions, like the deleted HD Stanton taking speed scene) the edited version of Repo Man is even better than the cussterful one.
This movie made me want to be a punk rocker, and a repo man. In hindsight, I'd say I was probably a better wannabe Repo Man than a wanna be punk rocker. At 12 and all.
I've owned the soundtrack on vinyl cassette and then as of one month ago compact disc.
I think I've outgrown the music, but it still makes me weepy.

Mellonfarmers unite!

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 27 January 2003 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Kate to thread!

plate of shrimp.

I was kinda upset the DVD reissue didnt have the TV version, all the swear words are classic.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 27 January 2003 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

And the Circle Jerks as a lounge band = classic.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 27 January 2003 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

So glad to see we're all in agreement.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 27 January 2003 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Could this be the elusive ILM consensus-builder?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 27 January 2003 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I had one of those classic record shop "What's this playing? This is great" moments once in Selectadisc (the old one before it moved to Market Street, which tells you how long ago it was). And the record was the Repo Man soundtrack. Didn't have the money to buy it that day, and spent about 10 years looking for it in the soundtrack section every time I went in a record shop. It was usually there, but it was always either too expensive or I was buying something else that day that took precedence.

Finally bought it and it didn't quite live up to the memory, but it's still good.

James Ball (James Ball), Monday, 27 January 2003 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Some hataz will come and point out the plot makes no sense what so ever.

John Wayne was a fag.

Dick Rude is my hero, esp. in Straight to Hell.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 27 January 2003 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey was Sy Richardson (the black Repo Man) in Barbershop? I remember seeing him in something very recently, in a very small role. I know he was in some commercial, like maybe an iced tea ad?

You're not alone.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 27 January 2003 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

In fact I wonder sometimes if overexposure to that movie during my tender pre-teen years didn't horribly mutate my life-ambition. Geez.
I think I like the instrumental tracks best these days. The end titles music, oh yeah.

This movie provided me (and I suspect a lot of other people as well) with my first exposure to harcore music. And Harry Dean Stanton. Classic. Classic. Classic.

Unbelievably classic, classic, classic.

Ever notice that the other repo men are named after beer? Bud, Miller, Lite

A repo man is always intense...

Chris Barrus (xibalba), Monday, 27 January 2003 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Miller is the only worthwhile hero to come out of the 80s

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 27 January 2003 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the generic beer and other such labels, but beer brand beer looks like a winner.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 27 January 2003 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

... see The Decline of Western Civilization -- classic.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 27 January 2003 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I blame John Hughes.

the answer

original bgm, Monday, 27 January 2003 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Movie and Soundtrack are both very good. Better than any other soundtrack I own.

Nate (Nate), Monday, 27 January 2003 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

The movie and the soundtrack CHANGED MY LIFE. I cannot stress this enough. The soundtrack opened my eyes to the world of hardcore and punk. Classic beyond belief.

kate, Monday, 27 January 2003 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Only finally saw this less than a year ago. Took me long enough.

at the end the credits scroll down from the top! i know it is feeble to get excited about that but !!!!

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I was just remebering how the soundtrack to SLC Punk took out some of the best songs used in the movie. No Rush or Roxy Music on the soundtrack? WTF! (Its a staple on the IFC channel)

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Another car-in-the-sky ending: Grease.

Yeah, Mighty Ducks (or a sequel) was the reason EE and the elder Sheen were in Minneapolis renting bikes with the kids. True story, I swear.

I don't know if I read it on the internet (I could've even read it somewhere here) or heard it in the film commentary, but apparently the FOOD and BEER things were actual generic products that the Ralphs or Albertsons grocery chain were going to put out. After not focus testing well, they decided to abandon the generics idea. The filmmakers were supposed to be sponsored by heineken or something but decided to use the warehouse full of useless grocery shit.

some important lessons learned:

1) if X event is to be occurring in ~120 seconds, it must be referred to as "in two minutes time".
2) eating FOOD from a plate decreases it's palatableness.
3) trash placed at or near a corner should be inched away from the roadway a foot or so, so it will not be confused with "in the street" by rowdy punks.
4) ordinary fucking people are to be hated.
