i just dont get it,all these people calling him such a dope mc and the future of rap.i think he sorta sounds like a stoned scarface with no flow.none whatsoever.plus dre's beats for him are the worst i think ive ever heard him make.....what am i missing?

juiceboxxx, Wednesday, 29 January 2003 01:02 (twenty-three years ago)

amazingly, i was just thinking about starting a thread on him myself, MTV had just played his new track twice within 90 minutes...tedious, plodding go-nowhere stuff indeed - doesnt do anything for me at all (tho thats no great surprise i guess) - at times he sounds VERY much like Tupac so maybe your take on him will affect your take on 50 Cent - the latter's a bit more subtle and understated at the moment perhaps.

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 01:10 (twenty-three years ago)

just waiting for the 'Whut da fuck, 50 Cent iz da prophet wit da profits gee, you little cracker-ass fucknuts hatin on his dope ass is proper gay' post from random googlers now :)

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 01:12 (twenty-three years ago)

you gotta figure that if Jay-Z is admired for being "laidback yet forceful" this guy's rasp is gonna drop jaws. But yeah, "unique" style doesn't necessarily mean "great" style. I remain hopeful for this guy though. Maybe Dre's blanding him out or something for mass consumption.

I read somewhere that he's famous for mocking other people's styles, but I sure haven't heard that kind of wit in his singles yet. Though I'm totally grateful for him bringing the word "wanksta" to my attention, even if the song sounds like its about 4 years off of the "fake gangsta" era.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 01:13 (twenty-three years ago)

why hopeful Anthony? what do you think he could bring to hip hop that NEEDs bringing? continuation of the Dre dynasty? is that necessary? what role will he fill that Xzibit is not able to for example? i know he's different from Xzibit but how and why exactly? my barely educated guess is that 50 Cent would be the equivalent of a DMX type, except he seems to lack that vocal spark...not sure about flow quality and stuff, find it hard to really analyse that aspect

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 01:26 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm hopeful because I was under the impression he was supposed to be kinda funny. And I don't find much of rap very funny these days.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 01:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Rap has become increasingly humorless these days. It's sad.

Majesticons to thread headphones!

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 01:38 (twenty-three years ago)

well, there's Paul Barman, but I'm in the minority in thinking that he's "funny".

Eminem used to be kind of funny... don't know the Majesticons.

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 29 January 2003 01:39 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not even talking about comedy rappers (Though Paul Barman is a good one, and Eminem when he wants to be).

I'd just like to see some more rappers who could be joyful, humorful, fast AND not think the world revolves around their dick.

Then again, Ja Rule's hideous variation on "black pride" (which I guess is about looking tough, referencing murdered rappers and promoting Murder Inc.) makes me wish he'd go back to the yacht. I'm curious what Chuck D thought about that one.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 01:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Thats cuz he's in there havin sex and ain't in there makin love....

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 02:07 (twenty-three years ago)

In Da Club is pretty nice though...

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 02:07 (twenty-three years ago)

if you want some "fun" rap peep the edan ep "sprain your tapedeck". theres a entire song on there about stealing, which at first thought may sound bland and stupid, but on first listen you will come to understand that the pure absurdness of the rhymes really make it work. also, a good deal of the tracks have this weird, wide-eyed 6 year old mc who doesnt really rhyme kind of appeal to it. also, everything else he has done has been dope as well.

juiceboxxx, Wednesday, 29 January 2003 03:05 (twenty-three years ago)

horrible. he sounds like his jaw's been wired half-shut, in which case someone should go the whole way.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 03:48 (twenty-three years ago)

too true. i've seen both of his recent videos ("wanksta" has to be the most crap production i've heard this year, incidentally) and and interview and i don't think his teeth have ever moved more than half a millimeter away from each other. he makes mike skinner seem hella talented.

HELLA.

your null fame (yournullfame), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 04:58 (twenty-three years ago)

50 cent is dope.

the "stealing other people's styles" thing might really mean jacking other people's beats, since that's what he did in a whole series of mixtapes with g-unit that made his name again after his deal with the majors was torpedoed.

i think of the dude like a black eminem -- he takes shots at ja instead of trl but still has that buzzing gadfly (in plato's sense) mocking nag of explosive indiscriminate satire.

y'all need to download "how to rob an industry n****" and see what the hype USED to be about.

Also wanksta is a great single, with very sharp wordplay and I think a v. strong narrative punch. And the beat is great! Like a casiofied funk.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 06:30 (twenty-three years ago)

he can get really sloppy and languid and sounds a bit ridiculous in this dead-pan half-asleep-thug sort of way. which can be good and at times oddly funny. the incongruity between his disinterested delivery and darker material can be really boggling, other times he's just flat and meandering. "how to rob..." i remember as being sly and humorous, almost as much as all the subsequent dissing and butter-knife incidents etc.

Honda (Honda), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 06:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Also wanksta is a great single

You mean this is an actual song? I just thought it was some random ILX joke reference.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 07:25 (twenty-three years ago)

i think he's great also. seems like he has a keen sense of when to "freak it" and to "flip the script". his steelo is clean. wanksta's funny: 50 cent = nelson muntz. but this opinion is based almost totally off his songs on 8 mile.

boxcubed (boxcubed), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 07:56 (twenty-three years ago)

The 3 or 4 mixtape songs of his i've downloaded are great; really sly/funny and i like his taffy flow; honda's comment about the incongruity is spot-on... i sort of think dre's production style may not be that suited to him, but i think both the singles are great

dave k, Wednesday, 29 January 2003 09:28 (twenty-three years ago)

how about that Obie Trice then?

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 10:57 (twenty-three years ago)

i only realized when i heard the obie trice song that it was the chorus of it that was samlped at the start of "without you"-this is either the most cynical or genius marketing technique ever...

robin (robin), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 13:14 (twenty-three years ago)

As usual, Sterling is OTM.

A friend e-mailed me the other day to give me the blah blah blah about how he wasn't feeling the 50 Cent because it's all "guns, drugs and pussy" and I was like, dude, did you even listen? "I want them to love me like they love Pac" is such a totally heartbreaking lyric...

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 14:30 (twenty-three years ago)

its hard to LISTEN to stuff like that, when the surface sucks like it does

if i had spotted that lyric about Tupac tho i think i would have cringed, i couldnt appreciate the possibility that it may be a heartfelt and true statement really. its like saying 'i want to be as famous as him, for doing the same things he did' - whats to admire in that really?

i did notice that Eminem also makes a reference to Tupac in that 'Just Dont Give A Fuck' track tho...seems like a running theme now (as always since his death i suppose)

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 14:46 (twenty-three years ago)

But that's exactly what makes that line so heartbreaking; that it's buried at the bottom of a mess of first-single gasconading! Then again, I also find the bit about "I'm not into making love" weirdly compelling, so maybe I'm the wrong person to ask.

But seriously, the best thing about 50 Cent is that he always looks like he's going to cry.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 15:05 (twenty-three years ago)

I think "In Da Club" is a fantastic single, and I really like his drawl/delivery. The promotion machine is working overtime for him, so he'll either wind up big or nothing (my bet is on big).

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 15:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Something about the handle is just sorta weird. He sounds like a cut-price competition to a 99 cent store.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 16:15 (twenty-three years ago)

"Realest Nigga" is great! Even if it's mostly for the unearthed Biggie verses. "In Da Club" is OK but the beat just kind of sits there on cruise control, like a lot of other Dre productions, unfortunately. And 50 Cent brings Ma$e to mind, which may be where the "funny" tag comes from.

original bgm, Wednesday, 29 January 2003 16:58 (twenty-three years ago)

50 Cent is clearly awesome. but i think he's mostly reminiscent of dirty souf rappers like juvenile; ergo his lazy flow and punch drunk cadence would sound alot better over bounce beats. dre is so boring these days!

gi66y, Wednesday, 29 January 2003 17:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Mark P is OTM about the best thing is that he looks like he's gonna cry. He'd do a great novelty single/video about wishing he could score some pot. Call it "Dollar Short A Nickelbag" or "If I Could Only Get High."

Sterling, you ARE a wanksta! There, I said it. ;)
I'll check out "how to rob..." though. DESPITE. ;)

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 17:38 (twenty-three years ago)

50 Cent's contributions to '8 mile' are great, Obie Trice's not so great (his bit on "Love Me" excepted).

Jeff W, Wednesday, 29 January 2003 18:33 (twenty-three years ago)

used to listen to lauryn hill and tap my feet. then the bitch put out a CD... didn't have no beats!

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 18:44 (twenty-three years ago)

why call her a bitch?

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 18:56 (twenty-three years ago)

while I think it's harsh to call her that, if a bitch=one who bitches, than all that annoying bitching about "reality" between the tracks certainly is some qualification for the term.

though personally I prefer the less controversial term "whiner."

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 19:03 (twenty-three years ago)

arg.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 19:12 (twenty-three years ago)

he sounds like his jaw's been wired half-shut, in which case someone should go the whole way.

As I understand it, he got shot up with 8 bullets or something in the past and his jaw really is half-shut.

cprek (cprek), Friday, 31 January 2003 22:28 (twenty-three years ago)

dud. 50 cent sleepy on all counts. obie triece is okay,
but really, eminem knows, like any big rapper,
not to let anyone into his 'posse' who might possibly
outshine him.

btw, is it too soon to thank zeus that fabolous is
thoroughly forgotten?

Squirl_police, Saturday, 1 February 2003 00:05 (twenty-three years ago)

"As I understand it, he got shot up with 8 bullets or something in the past and his jaw really is half-shut."

That's what I've heard as well. If you listen to his old bootlegs, his voice is less muddled. i don't know...i don't think he's the next biggie, but he has a wonderful flow on "in da club," i love how he uses his voice to glide over the beat with nuanced little flares, instead of positioning himself real hard against it. and it's almost so beautiful becuase he seems vocally limited due to his injury. i don't care for the production that much; it doesn't have the loopy carnival atmospherics of "wanksta." whoever said that dre (or dre's ghost producers, apparently) are boring is OTM, as you guys say around here. my favorite song by him is still "how to rob an industry nigga." i love it when he tells missy to put the hot dog down. i wonder if missy heard this before the "work it remix."
