How many of these are there, eh? I kind of like that George Michael song on Red Hot + Rio.

Red Hot & Bothered is an excellent comp, as is parts of the one with Cole Porter covers on it (Red Hot & Blue? can't remember)

S: "+Rio" is for the most part otm

(" + Rhapsody" was rather patchy)

ron (ron), Thursday, 30 January 2003 04:56 (twenty-two years ago)

two years pass...
We've been talking about these on the Chicago thread, prompted by a mention of the song "Un Ange en Danger" by MC Solaar, which is on Red Hot + Cool.

I have Stolen Moments: Red Hot + Cool, Offbeat: A Red Hot Sound Trip, and Red Hot + Rio. I like all of them pretty well, although none of them are really consistent as albums. There's always at least one embarrassing track or two (David Byrne struggling to stay in key on "Aguas de Marco" on Rio, for example) -- or else the eclectic styles don't always mesh well. But I love all of the left-field collaborations, and they usually get some pretty interesting names to participate (I mean, Offbeat has My Bloody Valentine, Tortoise, DJ Spooky, Barry Adamson, Moby, etc.), so it's usually worth it.

Red, Hot + Blue is utter genius almost the entire way through.

There was a companion to Red Hot + Rio called "Nova Bossa" which is an absolutely rock-solid Bossa Nova/Tropicalia/MPB comp.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 19:42 (twenty years ago)

Everything But the Girl's take on "Corcovado" as drum'n'bass-lite is fairly spectacular.

Yeah, that looks great.

I was a Zealot for Red Hot + Rio, but I think much of it aged poorly.

Then again, I liked the PM Dawn track, so what do I know.

The Nova Bossa comp is a great intro for Bossa Nova, but if you already have two Bossa comps, the overlap is ridiculous.

PappaWheelie B.C., Wednesday, 5 October 2005 19:46 (twenty years ago)

OTM!

I got that after I got RH+R and it is 100% fantastic. It was like my teenage Bossa Nova primer. Also the former has Cazuza and Bebel Gilberto doing "Preciso Dizer Que Te Amo" on it, whihc is one of my favorite songs of all time.

400% Nice (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 19:47 (twenty years ago)

Does anyone know if there are plans for more?

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 19:48 (twenty years ago)

The Fela one, "Red Hot & Riot" is classic. The best of the lot, that I've heard.

dark Horse, Wednesday, 5 October 2005 19:48 (twenty years ago)

I'm a huge fan of Red Hot + Riot, I still put it all the time.

I also used to have a well-loved mp3 of Mos Def & Talib Kweli doing a pretty great version of "Money Jungle" (backed by Ron Carter, John Patton, and Nasheet Waits). It was from Red Hot + Indigo, which appears to be very OOP now, but also has the Roots w/D'Angelo, Tortoise, Mary J. Blige, and Martha Wainwright!

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 19:50 (twenty years ago)

Wait, how did I not realize that No Alternative was part of this series? Weird.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 19:50 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, No Alternative had a Sundays track...which was the only reason I knew.

My zealotry for the Sundays has not waned.

PappaWheelie B.C., Wednesday, 5 October 2005 19:53 (twenty years ago)

Complete list:

Red Hot + Blue (1990: Cole Porter)
Red Hot + Dance (1992: dance)
No Alternative (1994: alt-rock)
Red Hot + Country (1994: country)
Stolen Moments: Red Hot + Cool (1994: jazz/hip-hop)
Red Hot + Bothered (1995: indie rock)
Offbeat: A Red Hot Soundtrip (1996: ambient/spoken word)
America is Dying Slowly (1996: hip-hop)
Red Hot + Rio (1996: bossa nova)
Red Hot + Latin (1997: Latin)
Red Hot + Rhapsody (1998: George Gershwin)
Onda Sonora: Red Hot + Lisbon (1999: Portuguese)
Red Hot + Indigo (2001: Duke Ellington)
Red Hot + Riot (2002: Fela Kuti)

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 19:58 (twenty years ago)

Offbeat was bad.

So was Nova Bossa a one-off of the series?

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 20:07 (twenty years ago)

I'm not sure. I think it was released on Verve, in partnership with the Red Hot Organization, but wasn't an official Red Hot release.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

Both were released on Polygram with very similar cover art within a week of each other.

I guess that a percentage of the proceeds of the Red Hot releases benefit charity whereas Nova Bossa is a straight-up comp.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 20:26 (twenty years ago)

Hmmm, okay: that makes sense.

400% Nice (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 20:33 (twenty years ago)

If you can make music puns, you can control the interweb.

400% Nice (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 20:37 (twenty years ago)

America is Dying Slowly was not very good, especially considering the talent involved. Wu Tang's title cut is classic and some other ones are ok, I seem to remember Organized Confusion and maybe Eightball/MJG doing aiight but most of the beats sound like rotten leftovers

tremendoid (tremendoid), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 21:33 (twenty years ago)

I listen to Nova Bossa all the time. It's great for parties too.

It's a great curio in many ways. (Found a copy for a buck at Amoeba the other day.)

Anyone else heard Red Hot + Arthur Russell? Liking the Jose Gonzalez and Robyn cuts so far. Not sure about the Scissor Sisters' take on "That's Us/Wild Combination" -- it's not bad, but that's my favorite Russell tune, probably, and they're not who I would've picked to cover it.

jaymc, Tuesday, 4 November 2014 04:32 (eleven years ago)

I don't usually go for things like this but I bought it just so I could play Hot Chip's Go Bang while DJing. I'm not even a fan of theirs but this track is what I wish they sounded like all the time.

Doran, Tuesday, 4 November 2014 12:00 (eleven years ago)

V. much enjoying the whole thing, esp. the disco prisms like xpost Scissor Sisters and Robyn's version of "Tell You (Today)," but really all of it, going in several different stylistic directions, appropriately for Arthur: art-pop adventurism x slightly refracted intimacy (x=rhythm). PS: I like his voice and the disco divas on originals, but doesn't hurt to hear other singers.

The Red Hot series ending up on Bandcamp has been a bit of a boon for finding out more of what was in the series as a whole, because I was never aware there was a country edition in 1994 -- now rereleased with a bunch of associated live tracks from the time, an interesting essay that reframes it then and now, etc.

Anyone read this? Can't believe they did one about this album because I really loved it but never imagined many other people did.
