Classic or Dud: Classic or Dud?

Mr. Glenn Mcdonald makes an important point on the "personal taste" thread. Have "Classic or Dud" and "Search & Destroy" threads become mere "dissing contests"? Does having more people praise a record than denounce it make you feel better about a piece of music? Has it ever turned your "no" into a "yes"? Vice versa?

(Have we had this thread before? I have faint recollection of its appearing in the past...)

Dud

Dude, we totally already did this, like a couple months ago. Let's discuss it again to piss off Nick.

I like it. I'm only catching up, and I like comparing my impressions of things with other people's. Someone else always picks up on that one little thing that annoyed or impressed you. I've never seen it as a "dissing contest". It's never changed my mind about anything, though.

I guess I responded to this in the personal taste thread, just now, but I'm too lazy to copy my response here.

C or D has never changed my mind about an artist or piece of music, but I do find it very interesting to see the reasoning behind *why* people love or loathe things. The fresh viewpoints often expressed provide a reason to put up with the "dissing contests".

I think it can be an interesting way to see what people think of certain artists and why they think that way. It never actually changes my mind about the music, I just enjoy the insight into why people think the way they do about music. When COD becomes irritating is when someone writes:

"Dud, this band sucks ass" or "Classic, this band is amazing"

Without bothering to explain why. I think even the "dissing contests" can be interesting if legitimate points are being made -- it can be challenging, and make people really think about why they like or dislike something. If people want self-congratulatory essays devoted to their favorite artist or want their writing to be unquestioningly accepted and praised, I don't know if a board such as this is necessarily suited to that.

Not to get all Elm Street on yo' asses, but where *is* Nick of the Thousand Eyes? Ditto Ethan... ?

mark s, Thursday, 14 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ditto geordie racer.

gareth, Thursday, 14 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I doubt a C or D thread has ever changed how I feel about an artist, but it sure has made me want to investigate some that I wasn't interested in before, and that's a damn good thing.

Patrick, Thursday, 14 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'd agree with Patrick. The COD format has gotten me interested in looking into some artists I hadn't been very familiar with before.

Nicole, Thursday, 14 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i like classic or dud. if any of them are dull, thats not the fault of the format and the majority of them are interesting anyway

The original original post has been lost to history but can be reconstructed from the replies here:

The Secret Origin Of Classic-Or-Dud

Note, depressingly/amusing, that lots of the same people are still discussing lots of the same things.

But no Geir! I wonder if Persi knows about this board, I kind of miss his take on things.

The original post is the 28th message in the thread.

I dunno, Persi vs Jackie got very boring after a while.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Wednesday, 20 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, yeah. But all flamewars/prolonged arguments get very boring very quickly, 98% percent of the time. Come to think of it, there's probably only a couple of people who would irritate me if they showed up here.

But here's what I really want to know: Why I am affiliated with a.m.a for the focus group? I haven't posted to it in years, and it's not like I was ever the most interesting or prolific poster there. Don't blame me, in other words.

Nicole, Wednesday, 20 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If I've done my a.m.a. homework right, Geir = power pop ayatollah... but Persi would be... ?

Patrick, Thursday, 21 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Guy who bought loads of music and would do a lot of reviews, etc. Very touchy about music, though.
