For a possible research project. I've not found any central resources or articles on the topic, so I would greatly appreciate any assistance.

(I'm generally a lurker here on ILM, and I am happy to finally ask a question of you all. Thanks in advance.)

So far, I have Northern State, Princess Superstar, and Tairrie B.

Sub-question: Should I consider pop-rap artists like Icy Blu and Betty Boo to be anything other than historical curiosities?

Chris A., Friday, 31 January 2003 07:25 (twenty-two years ago)

is that one girl on "Cooking with Gas" white?

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 31 January 2003 07:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Invincible was in one of the big Blaze magazine battles and was profiled in one of the first few issues

boxcubed (boxcubed), Friday, 31 January 2003 08:07 (twenty-two years ago)

are the yeastie girls white? "suck this" total classic search

gaz (gaz), Friday, 31 January 2003 09:53 (twenty-two years ago)

crucial forerunners: Teena Marie's "Square Biz," Tom Tom Club's "Wordy Rappinghood" and "Genius of Love" (the latter not rap really but important anyway), Blondie's "Rapture" obv

Whatever happened to Luscious Jackson? I love Naked Eye.

Jez (Jez), Friday, 31 January 2003 12:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Does Nelly Furtado count as white? She's of Portuguese descent, so probably considers herself Latina.

But no matter what her ethnic classification, d-u-d

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 31 January 2003 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

i think there's a group in San Francisco (or maybe Oakland) right now called K.I.T. that are white girls rapping. i've only heard about them, so i can't confirm.

one of the girls was in DJ Shitbird and the Ultimate Party Machine. they're supposed to have an 8 year old girl in the group, but since she can't stay out late or tour, one of the girls from KIT "sings" for them. if anyone from SF has a chance to see them, they are the stupidest fun you will ever have.

JasonD (JasonD), Friday, 31 January 2003 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

that girl's name is kristy and she goes by the MC name "lil pocket knife". she's the only girl in KIT.

I've traded flows with a girl named Robin here in the Lex (albeit extremely drunkenly) that was OFF THE HANDLE! Where are you Robin!?! We need to do some shit!

So, am I the only person who doesn't hate Princess Superstar...in fact actually really really digs her music?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 31 January 2003 18:35 (twenty-two years ago)

not that i know anythin about her but what about Peaches?

coelcanth, Friday, 31 January 2003 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

i personally find her annoying although some may not.

i've only seen DJ shit bird once, in the backyard at a house party. my friend erik (crack, big techno werewolves) is in the band. i seemed to be one of the only people at the party having fun. the rest of the crowd was too cool to dance. i think had i not known erik, i too would have thought it was dumb. i mean the only thing she sang the whole night was "PARTY! PARTY! PARTY! WE CAME TO PARTY!" over stupid 200bpm techno beats.

YES! Betty Boo is great and her style will have influenced very many of the popier rappers, especially in the UK.

Er, all the Portuguese in Portugal certainly consider themselves white.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Friday, 31 January 2003 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

So do the Spaniards, for that matter.

Jellysbean, Friday, 31 January 2003 23:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, the whole latino thang seems very much a Southern America/Mexico kinda thang...

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Saturday, 1 February 2003 00:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I am totally into Princess Superstar. (And put out the first record she appeared on as P.S., way back in the day.)

Douglas (Douglas), Saturday, 1 February 2003 01:01 (twenty-two years ago)

matt riedl (veal), Saturday, 1 February 2003 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sure I read a Princess Superstar interview wher she said she was going to get more techno and I have a fabric CD where she's got an awesome song called Fuck Me On The Dancefloor.

Anyone know any more about that?

mei (mei), Sunday, 2 February 2003 14:16 (twenty-two years ago)

S: Princess Superstar's "You Get Mad at Napster"

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 3 February 2003 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

You can count Betty Boo because of the less poppy stuff she did with the Beatmasters.

Also the girl doing the ragga-style toasting on Ezee Possee's 'Everything Starts With An E' is white and (apparently) awfully, awfully well spoken.

If you're really really desperate or want some light relief look to Alternate's MC Crazy Claire, the six year old daughter of their label manager.

Anna (Anna), Monday, 3 February 2003 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Altern 8 even.

Sorry, proper English took a hold of me there, which just wont do when talking about early nineties rave.
