i had that rec "There's something going on" on cassette, and i think i've lost it. anyways, the first 3 songs on it were fucking brilliant. Um, "Bad Old Man", "If You'll be mine..." and "Together Again" i think it was. Sadly, the album petered out from there on in. the other tracks were bleak and dull.

but the excellence of the first three tracks gives me hope. is any of their/his other stuff worth a listen...?

i have a big big soft spot for the first non-lo-fi album, and The Greatest Hits comp of the lofi stuff is fantastic too. I don't really think the more recent stuff is up to the same level..

the first non-lo-fi album being Ugly Beautiful

i still love 'The F Word' single - most raucous thing i've heard from the guy - try that

"You're Gorgeous" is gorgeous.

The solo stuff was always the best and it was truly, truly great -- Dying Happy is particularly great from where I stand. Ugly Beautiful just seemed to squash all the life out of them.

fatherhood is the best album what with songs like Aluminum Beach and Good Weather and Saturday it has to be but then dying happy is pretty great too. never liked any of the non-lo fi stuff, but that's the indie answer isn't it.

keith (keithmcl), Monday, 3 February 2003 01:42 (twenty-two years ago)

oh i'd forgotten about this band.

I still love the lo-fi albums (Fatherhood, Bad Shave and I Was Born A Man in particular), and the full band albums are patchy but have their moments. Did anyone buy the triple 3" CD boxset of instrumental stuff he released?

Matthew (faster), Monday, 3 February 2003 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I liked the first non-lo-fi single, that came out a couple of months before "You're Gorgeous" - "Goodnight", it's called. That was quite good.

What, are the nineties back in fashion?

Momus (Momus), Monday, 3 February 2003 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

seems i still have that cassette after all. hooray! i had you all worried for a second there, didn't I?

ugh, its just badly drawn boy really isnt it?

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, you say that like it's a bad thing! Actually wait, it is. To me, babybird sound a little like Echo and the Bunnymen.

I did Bad Old Man at karaoke last week and all the people who had been doing Living On A Prayer and Power Of Love and Total Eclipse left the room

ten months pass...

I remember seeing Bad Old Man in a karaoke book in 2000. Why was it even there?

So it can still be found and performed? Ace!

I'm with Jim, "The Greatest Hits" 2cd comp is terrific, and all I ever need. He's like the UK's version of Robert Pollard.

I would have loved to have seen the looks on the faces of the casual record buyers who bought Ugly Beautiful based on only hearing 'You're Gorgeous' when they heard stuff like 'King Bing' ...

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Tuesday, 7 May 2019 03:01 (six years ago)

Was thinking about this recently. And 'I Didn't Want To Wake You Up', an absolutely gruesome song

PaulTMA, Tuesday, 7 May 2019 10:55 (six years ago)

"45 & Fat" drove my buy of _Ugly Beautiful_. Worth it just for that track alone.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SoM4-MB0aHg

I'll sing about love / 'til I'm 45 and fat
I'll take almost anything / but I won't take that
You can tie me up in knots / but I'll keep on coming
You can take away my voice / but I'll keep on humming
