Specifically, what is it? I seem to remember talk of a 12" a couple of years ago in hushed tnes by some mates of mine at university, and surreptitious tape copies changing hands. Is it any good? I've seen it on CD, is this a bootleg? Is the sound quality shite? For £8 is it worth getting?

There's a semi-regular hip-hop event in San Francisco called The Future Primitive Soundsession, which brings together DJs to perform together. Sometimes the nights have themes, and in 1999, Future Primitive did a show where the DJs used nothing but 7-inch records (maybe called the "45 Session.") DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist performed together, cutting and mixing some rare funk singles, odd promo records, etc. The night before the event they practiced their set and recorded it to DAT, that tape became the Brainfreeze CD. It hasn't quite been "officially" release b/c of copyright problems, but they sold CD-Rs of it on tour, and there are a ton of copies floating around now. Sound quality is good, it's a fun set, worth getting.

I happened to be at the Future Primitive 45 Session thing and it was great -- this kind of thing is so much better live, w/ the element of surprise.

there were plenty of copies floating around napster back in the day, so i'm sure you can find this on kazaa and the like.

and speaking of future primitive, the shortkut+cut chemist session is one that did recieve a proper release, and if you're into scratchy goodness, i'd suggest you hunt it down.

Anyone know anything about the Product Placement thing as well? Cos there was a copy of that too.

I think, for £8, Brainfreeze might be worth a look.

Get Brainfreeze. I heard about 30 mins. of it before my burned copy of it started skipping.
Product Placement is similar, so if you like Brainfreeze enough, get that one too.

er isnt Brainfreeze MEANT to sound like its skipping at that point? i remember playing it where i used to work and towards the end everyone was looking at me wondering whether it was deliberate or not

"product placement" is the sequel to brainfreeze. it includes a lot of promotional records (i.e. a coke jingle) and other strange things, the highlight being a home-economics class record called "cookin' with gas" that features kids rapping over the t-la rock/jazzy jay "it's yours" beat. there's also a brainfreeze redux portion, featuring presumably even rarer versions of its songs with different lyrics and such. it's good.

No, I got the cd in a batch from my friend. All of them started to skip and repeat the intro to every track.
