Hendrix without Mitch Mitchell not as good?

As I started to say in the Supergrass thread, would Jimi Hendrix have been as interesting to listen to had he not been backed by Mitch Mitchell most of the time? Take the Hendrix Woodstock set versus the Band of Gypsies. One of the best live records I've ever heard versus a fair-to-middling show that I might sell back to the Record Exchange eventually. Sure, Mitchell had bad time, but he's a hell of a lot more fun to listen to than Buddy Miles, who plays like John Bonham's idiot cousin.

I thought the greatest thing about the Hendrix Experience was Mitchell and Reading in the fact that they juxtaposed Jimi's over the top style with what could sometimes be regarded as relative incompetence. Axis: is where its at.

I have always felt that if Hendrix had been captured by jazz — as many seem to wish he was about to be — he would have become somewhat rubbish. HOWEVER: if he had got to play with one of the more out-there Miles Davis group c.1970-74? (But how likely is this? Miles's guitar picks were incredibly uneven, and wd Hendrix have wanto be one of four in a Dark Magus style four-guitar attack?)

Mitch later admitted he overdrummed in those days. Thats what hallucinagenics will do to you . Still I like bot h him AND Buddy Miles. What i wonder is what Hendrix would've done with electronic stuff in the 70s and eighties

One of those guitarists from the 'Dark Magus' period (Reggie Lucas) went on to produce Madonna's first album! How cool is that? Imagine if Pete Cosey had done the same for Stacey Q?

Well, he lost his connection with the Jennings books.

Which says something, but what it says, I don't know :).

Actually, the only Hendrix stuff I really love is the Band of Gypsies with Buddy Miles. He and Billy Cox had the FUNK...that band grooved so much more, and I thought they listened to each other a lot more as well, there was more equality.

As for the Miles group...Miles says in his autobiography (or maybe I read it somewhere else?) that a record date was supposed to go down including him, Jimi, Tony Williams, and a bassist (can't remember if it was Ron Carter or Jimi's bass player), but someone backed out at the last second (I think Miles wanted more money, but Jimi was nervous about it anyway). That would be a record to hear.

If Hendrix hadn't died he'd have had a huge mullet and wrote songs with Eric Clapton. You *know* it's true.

why's everybody put mitch m. down for "overplaying"? people who think that *john bonham* (a plodding lead footed fatass) apotheosised heavy rock drumming...whadda they know, mumble mumble kvetch kvetch...Anyway I think Mitch M. wuz GREAT, sorry GRATE, his overplaying wasn't the grim robot-jagoff of like Neil Peart or somebody, it was loose & spontaneous & wild sounding & totally suited the music Hendrix was doing then. OF FUCKING COURSE 'Drix (do you like my new name for him?) was better with Mitchell than with Buddy Miles, Buddy fuckin' Miles was about as funky as that pudnik from U2.

"grim robot-jagoff": but surely this is good!! (Rush = band I always say I like, to MAKE PPL GASP: but actually they are extremely boring mostly: tho I wuv Xanadu, esp. as have not played it or heard since abt 1979...)

People who complain about 'over-playing' are just jealous 'cause THEY CAN'T DO IT THEMSELVES! nah nah nah nah nah nah nah so there!

tarden, Tuesday, 19 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)
