That cover of "Bigmouth Strikes Again" by Placebo...

... is currently making me very happy. It's the first time I've heard Placebo where I haven't wanted to slap them.

This probably says more about the song itself than their actual cover, though.

Are there songs out there which are so well-written that it's impossible to do a bad cover of them? Is "Bigmouth Strikes Again" one of them?

You know, I still maintain that if you can look past the whole them-sucking thing, Placebo used to be pretty okay.

Finally, he's off the mark!

Cozen (Cozen), Monday, 3 February 2003 18:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Man, I'm a Placebo fan, and even I think that song sucks. It's the way he changes the lyrics. I mean...

And now I know how joan of arc felt
now I know how joan of arc felt
as the flames rose to her roman nose
and her megadrive started to melt

Come off it... Search out Plakky-bo's cover of "Some Girls Are Better Than Other", which suits them so much better than BSA. He leaves the lyrics well alone, as well.

That was actually my favorite part of the cover (besides the painstakingly-recreated piano part).

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 3 February 2003 18:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, if we're discussing Placebo covers.... their take on Robert Palmer's "Johnny and Mary"... just... yes.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 3 February 2003 18:56 (twenty-two years ago)

...and I love their cover of 20th Century Boy.

Actually I think they've produced quite a lot of un-sucky music altogether. :) Some majorly sucky stuff too, no denying it, but some gems as well. This is going to sound perverse, but there's something really sincere about Placebo (1st 2 albums anyway. Black Market Music is just bollox.)

Dan-

Search out Treepeople's cover of "Big Mouth" for an early 90s indie take on it.

oh yeah, it's sung/played by the guy from Built To Spill before he got mellow and all that bulljive.

Quite right!

This is about as close to a pure truth as we'll ever get on ILM.

I'm so honoured, I've gone all pink.

Zora (Zora), Monday, 3 February 2003 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Black Market Music is actually my favorite.

Really? Why?

Zora (Zora), Monday, 3 February 2003 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I like most of Placebo's stuff. I think the second album is the dodgiest of the three, if I had to choose.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 3 February 2003 23:59 (twenty-two years ago)

and yeah, the version of "Johnny & Mary" is one of the best things they've done, and quite excellent.
