Was there ever a bloke that everyone wants to have a good selling record, without them actually buying it themselves?

Hahaha. Yeah, man. That's it. I was happy for him when he got a #1 in the U.S. with Modest Mouse, but I didn't like the album.

If he made a proper jangling record then I would want to have it.

Alright then, well...you see, the best stuff Marr did post-Smiths was with Kirsty MacColl. A few damn fine Smiths-y tunes he did with her. Get her Kite album and her Electric Landlady album and see if you can find them. Not to discount some of the lovely guitar work he contributed to a few songs on the first two Electronic albums.

I would still smash him, though. Any day of the week. Don't care how much he ages, I'd still smash him.

Yeah, heard that a few weeks back. Who is the backing band? Interpol? Or is it all Marr?

yeah i dunno, the drum sounds are a bit gimmicky like that super gated snare that sounds like a drum machine, but def a franz ferdindand/interpol vibe....

the singing is pretty good too, is that him? sounds almost better than i thought he could sing....

either way, for all the kinda 80s goth disco backing stuff i think it kinda works, lets his guitar breathe a lot better than ploddy oasis type stuff

it's weird there's this band from Mpls named Howler, and I guess the frontman is the son of the ex-VP of our old parent company and the Howler dude is dating Marr's daughter and basically lives with them now

Be weird to have Marr as your FiL. Everyone would be all "don't ever ask im-hey about the Iths-May."

This is one of my all time fav. Johnny Marr moments. Very clearly feeling the ecstasy he and Johnson were taking on this tour and playing a great wah-wah disco tinged section during the breakdown in the middle of Giant. Unfortunately I can't find a soundboard recording of this tour that includes Giant so I have to keep watching this video.

Did anyone listen to that Johnny Marr solo album yet?

Am curious about it but have just seen the press release so far. US tour is happening too

Album is more than solid, some stuff on it better than solid. Oddly enough, I kept thinking his singing voice was similar to, of all people, Phil Manzanera's.

tbh, though, I kept thinking of what awesome guitars he must be using, or whether he was using his hybrid Jaguar for everything, but I doubt he is.

I like the album a lot, actually. A few clunkers but overall solid like Josh said.

And he's one of the great music guys, super cool and nice.

thanks for the info, a little better than solid, you say. that's what i expected though of course that would be disappointing for the first solo album of someone like johnny marr who was the most exciting guitar player for a couple of years and then almost totally disappeared into session musicianship. the last great album he was on was the first electronic album or did i miss something?

Guitar playing's lovely. Melodies are strong. Let down by his singing and lyric writing. You spend the whole album wishing Morrissey or Matt Johnson were fronting it.

The loveliest man though. A real delight to interview.

Would love to have heard the literally lost album he recorded with Ian McCulloch.

dusk was quite good but not what i'd call a great album, i haven't listened to it for at least 15 years, so it didn't leave the same long-term imprint on me as the first electronic album.

has anyone seen him recently live? he is coming to berlin on monday and i was thinking of going. does he and his band still do smiths songs live? the one song from the new album (out June, 15th) i heard ("hi hello") was ok, his guitar sound is still ace.

The live album that was put out a year or so ago is a good listen. From that and videos I have seen, it looks like Johnny Marr puts on a good show.

Yeah we're seeing him in a couple of weeks over here. Going in with no expectations and we'll see how it goes.

His solo work is much better than I'd ever have guessed it would have been. He was good on the last tour when I saw him.

The succession of How soon is now?, New town velocity (he said he wrote this on the day he left school, i had never heard it, a fabulous song) and There is a light that never goes out at the end was godlike. His guitars still sound magoc. They got switched after about every second song. I came late and missed Bigmouth, I think. I am pretty sure that his kind of modest renditions of the Smiths songs are probably better than over the top Morrissey interpretations. Anyways he is the closest you can come to the Smiths live these days.
