Interesting contemporary Irish bands or artists ... Can you name any?

The Boy Cedric, Monday, 3 February 2003 20:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Creative Controle... are they Northern or Republic? I can't remember, but very very interesting. "Bloodrush" is the closest anyone outside of the US has come to copying that prime period Wu-Tang vibe.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 3 February 2003 20:53 (twenty-three years ago)

boa morte

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 3 February 2003 20:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Bothy Band, but don't know if they're considered "contemporary."

jazzbo (jmcgaw), Monday, 3 February 2003 21:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i think damien rice and the frames are absolutely top-notch.

Sean@tangmonkey (Sean M), Monday, 3 February 2003 21:01 (twenty-three years ago)

OMNIPOTENT BABY

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 3 February 2003 21:02 (twenty-three years ago)

sub-trifean at best

gareth (gareth), Monday, 3 February 2003 21:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Gah! Don't use the f-word, Sean!

Gavin Friday

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 3 February 2003 21:15 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't know if The Frames are ass-heads in person, Killian, but For the Birds is one heck of an album.

Sean@tangmonkey (Sean M), Monday, 3 February 2003 21:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Hystereo (french house signed to soma, no releases yet but what I've heard is good), Philth (superstar dj/producer), Paul H*ghes (signed to brick rouge by david duriez), Omnipotent Baby (the future?????). These are my people, my motherfuckin people. They are all friends, some close some less so but they are good I swear.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 3 February 2003 21:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Dublin is dance capital of Europe of course.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 3 February 2003 21:25 (twenty-three years ago)

I quite liked The Thrills when I saw them on Tuesday. Nice kind of classical indie-pop schizz. They may well turn shite, but I've got this feeling they might end up being great instead. I seriously freaked out the keyboard player afterwards, though.

And the delightful Miss Hayes, obviously. Though I know no-one round here agrees. I did consider making a bootleg of her over the top of The Groundbreaker and sending it to Source, with a note attached saying "Go on..." Then I realised I wouldn't actually know how. And they'd ignore it for not being French acid-jazz/Turin Brakes.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 3 February 2003 21:39 (twenty-three years ago)

The Thrills might succeed because they moved out of Dublin ages ago, any of the bands who stay might as well tie rocks to their feet.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 3 February 2003 21:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, they'll succeed. I just dunno if they'll stay good.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 3 February 2003 21:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah I just meant that for Dublin bands actually selling some records outside of the dead indie scene here is a miracle!

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 3 February 2003 21:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah - isn't David Kitt, like, popular over there?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 3 February 2003 21:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah I saw him in a newsagent a few weeks ago, I thought he was a DJ cos he had one of those roger sanchez hats on backwards, and his face was familiar and I was thinking "who is it". Then I realised it was boring old Dave. There's a big singer songwriter fetish over here, my mates Hystereo getting signed to Soma is more progress than 95 percent of other Irish bands covered in the press and I've seen nothing. Yes I know I should do the interview myself.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 3 February 2003 21:56 (twenty-three years ago)

DANIEL FIGGIS - 'Skipper' CD sounds very good; bits and pieces from more recent stuff (only a few i've heard, alas) are also up to mark.
but i know his work only by some recordings - what his multi-media and theatre projects are actually like, me have no idea

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Monday, 3 February 2003 22:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I swear there's others I like, it seems inconceivable there wouldn't be. That one Nina Hynes song I've heard I quite liked. Well, bits of it. The samples were naff, but the twang on the guitars at the start was very nice.

I hate Wilt, though. I can't remember if they're actually Irish, but the singer's called Cormac, so I'm guessing they probably are.

I will think of some more. I will.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 3 February 2003 22:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah they are, his name is Cormac Battle which is kind of amusing. I sat watching them at Witnness festival cos it was so mucky and I wanted to be at the front for the Chemical Brothers, their fans are like wild apes.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 3 February 2003 22:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Wilt? Have? Fans? Irish music must really be muffed, then...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 3 February 2003 22:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah you've no idea.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 3 February 2003 22:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Hell, you spat out Colin Murray and made David Gray popular. I can take at least an educated guess.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 3 February 2003 22:14 (twenty-three years ago)

the thrills, gemma hayes and david kitt are OKAY. but not great. some of my friends treat the frames with a reverence which is really quite baffling. one of them goes to every gig the frames do in dublin (and that's a hell of a lot of gigs, let me tell you).

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 3 February 2003 23:06 (twenty-three years ago)

can i take this opportunity to remind everyone that Ireland produced Kevin Shields? So that makes up for the frames, U2 and making David Gray popular.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 3 February 2003 23:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Who are Omnipotent Baby?

Are Chicks still going? They were shit.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 00:56 (twenty-three years ago)

*looks on ILE* Oh right....

Stanley Super 800 is good

Michael B, Tuesday, 4 February 2003 01:54 (twenty-three years ago)

the jimmy cake are probably the best band i've heard over the last few years...
decal are good, from what i've seen of them...
i used to go to loads of frames gigs,if i'd never seen them live i'd probably think they were complete dicksweat, but they can be exceptional live
creative controle might well turn out to be really good, bloodrush was certainly excellent...

robin (robin), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 03:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Robin's OTM here until he talks about the Frames. I've seen 'em live supporting various people over the years and they aren't very interesting, their songs are like various different indie bands. SO they do one that’s a total pixies rip followed by a rip of the Stunning followed by the sound of my head exploding. Actually skip the last one, it might actually be interesting. Its more like the sound of me going to the bar. Lots of people I know seem to like them but I really don't see the appeal. The second Jimmy Cake album is much better than the first (which wasn’t bad but in retrospect seems rather rambling) and if Decal have made bad records nobody's played them to me.

The Daniel Figgis album "Skipper" is nice. He was sleazing at a woman I work with in the pub last year. Classy.

Rollers/Sparkers are very good for the general post-rock thing but with some really interesting tracks based on "strange vocal noises" except not half a shit as that description sounds. Their EP Geography for the Leaving is worth getting just for the inner sleeve.

The Tycho Brahae are very nice, a little like the Sundays but with a great singer and better songs.

tigerclawskank, Tuesday, 4 February 2003 10:40 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah i realise the frames opinion is likely to be fairly controversial, and to be honest i haven't listened to them in a while now so my opinion may have changed, but i have seen them play some exceptional gigs...it does depend though, they can be a bit dodgy (any time i've seen them in vicar st,for example)but ive seen some great gigs in whelans, and an excellent one in the sand dunes in brittas bay....

robin (robin), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 13:56 (twenty-three years ago)

two months pass...
Rollerskate Skinny, New Model Army

John Bullabaugh (John Bullabaugh), Monday, 7 April 2003 20:42 (twenty-three years ago)

two years pass...
Are Hystereo still releasing stuff? I've liked what I heard from them. The Amazing Pilots' "I've got wings, irene" was one of the best Irish songs of recent years. Any other decen Irish acts out there now.

Michael B, Wednesday, 15 March 2006 13:56 (twenty years ago)

Someone recommended an Irish band called Son? Ordinary Son? Boy? Something boring like that. Anyone know who I mean? (I don't think it's Whipping Boy.) Are they any good?

And are Bell X1 secretly great indie? Should I track down Flock? "Alphabet Soup" is a great tune.

Also - anyone know if Lisa Hannigan's going to do something other than make Damien Rice's career for him?

sean gramophone (Sean M), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 14:32 (twenty years ago)

Wait, I forgot The Chalets, they're pretty good. The sinlge 'Flame' by Bell X1 is getting a lot of play on the radio. Maybe that sound is too fashionable now for me to truly love it. I have my doubts if they are 'secretely great ' or not.

Michael B, Wednesday, 15 March 2006 14:38 (twenty years ago)

there seems to be some fun kinda messy stuff coming out of deserted village records...but ive only listneed to samples...

bb (bbrz), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 14:42 (twenty years ago)
