I Have Velvet Tinmine --- some great tracks and not so great --- Simon Turner is actually a young Simon Fisher Turner of Derek Jarman soundtrack/Mute records fame (one of the better cuts), dug the Flame & Bearded Lady cuts too...

Brian Turner (btwfmu), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 02:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Arthur (Arthur), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 03:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Hot damn, I got Velvet Tinmine and Magpie from amazon.uk yesterday.
Magpie is good but Velvet Tinmine is REALLY GREAT. Listen to "I Wanna Go To A Disco" by Ricky Wilde, then put on "Fish and Chips" by Denim. Ahah!

The Magpie inlay advertises "Zig Zag" (RPM 262) and "Glitterbest" (RPM 265), but they're not on the RPMrecords website yet. Anyone know anything about these? I want MORE!

retort pouch (retort pouch), Friday, 20 June 2003 13:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I must have Magpie! Velvet Tinmine is fantastic, probably one the albums I have enjoyed the most this year.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 20 June 2003 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I have Magpie now!!! Fantastic!! Bow down before the genius of Andrew Bown's 'Tarot Ace Of Wands' theme! Salute Don Fardon's 'Belfast Boy'!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 3 July 2003 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Anybody else got it?

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 4 July 2003 09:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I have it, it makes me a-tremble with happiness. The Matchmakers are on heavy rotation at the moment.

Does anyone have? What is like? Worth to buy? etc

Alex in Leeds (Alex in Doncaster), Thursday, 23 October 2003 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

It's obviously fantastic! But I don't have it yet.

This series is so utterly grebt. VT and Magpie grow in greatness with every play.

anyone heard GLITTERBEST yet????

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Sunday, 13 June 2004 13:30 (twenty-one years ago)

"Glitterbest" disappointed me, I was expecting something in the vein of "Velvet Tinmine", but it's more like a compilation of teenage rock bands that paved the way to what ended being called punk. Chris Spedding is featured. There are brilliant moments, of course, but there's little that sticks as much as "I Wanna Go To A Disco" or "Morning Bird" does.

If any of you liked "Velvet Tinmine" and want a compilation in that vein, I urge you to get "Glitter In The Litter Bin" -Sactuary/Castle Records-, wich is as good if not better. Some Ayshea sings a Roy Wood penned-and-produced track called "Farewell" that is so best. There are tracks by junk shop glam stars The Jook and Buster. Plus, there's "Thing" by Edwina Biglet & The Miglets -a fictional band for sure- wich is my favourite song ever these days. It has to be heard to be believed.

Diego Valladolid (dvalladt), Sunday, 13 June 2004 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I didn't like Glitterbest quite as much, will definitely investigate Glitter/Litter Bin thingy though cause Velvet Tinmine is STILL near-perfect. This afternoon I lay in the garden to Zigzag and it was ideal and blissy.

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Sunday, 13 June 2004 18:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm thinking about getting "Zigzag" soon, I'm guessing it's in the campy soft-rock of Leo Sayer vein... Also, what should I expect from "Magpie"? Is it just, say, library music, or are there proper songs in there?

Diego Valladolid (dvalladt), Sunday, 13 June 2004 19:00 (twenty-one years ago)

There are proper songs on Magpie; it's not really a radiophonic-workshop kind of thing, it's TV themes and advert music but all full-bodied and stretched'n'developed and bits of it are kind of boogaloo-y and stuff. It may just possibly be my favourite of all these albums, is ever bit as joyous and fantastic as Velvet Tinmine but in a more rolling and luxurious kind of way (and you can totally hear the seeds of St Etienne and Denim and the best bits of people like King Of Woolworths and, uh, Emma Bunton in there too which is supergreat plus) and it is pure teatime-ITV-cosy really (overlooking the BBC-related tracks here obv).

These are SUCH great albums, the first three are entirely flawless MORE MORE pls.

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Sunday, 13 June 2004 19:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Cool. I'll invest in "Magpie" alongside "Zigzag". Those RPM guys... I'm hooked.

Diego Valladolid (dvalladt), Sunday, 13 June 2004 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

three years pass...

I just got this this weekend and I loves it. Well except for that closing "Kick Out The Jams" tune which is largely horrible.

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 25 June 2007 16:24 (eighteen years ago)

I only ever had the mp3s of these floating around, I really must get the actual discs.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 25 June 2007 16:28 (eighteen years ago)

I found a used copy at Amoeba - photos in the liner notes of Iron Virgin are rofflicious

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 25 June 2007 16:34 (eighteen years ago)

nine years pass...

Finally (at long last) got not only this -- the repressing, with some different tracks IIRC -- but also Magpie and Zig Zag as discussed above as well as Boobs, which was more or less the direct sequel to Velvet Tinmine with the idea that this was more glam rock/dance club material from the time:

https://www.discogs.com/Various-Boobs-The-Junkshop-Glam-Discotheque/release/767958

Pondering getting the other ones in the more or less series like Glitterbest as well as Bubblepop -- that other one mentioned here, the Glitter From the Litter Bin comp, goes for ridiculous money now but I found a rip from somewhere so at least there's that!

Also, I stumbled across where exactly ground zero for the 'junkshop glam' idea was, namely Phil King of Felt/JAMC/Lush et al -- not that this is surprising since he's all over these comps as compiler and/or liner note writer (he also helped with Glitter from the Litter Bin, which makes sense). This article from 2002, a year before Tinmine came out, is useful for some context:

https://www.theguardian.com/culture/2002/mar/19/artsfeatures

...but the better one is this one from last year, where he talks in depth about where and how the full mania for him in finding these singles started:

http://www.eyeplug.net/magazine/interview-with-phil-king/

And the book mentioned there, Wired Up!, definitely is on my list now, given the interviews he said he did for it:
