does anyone know the whereabouts of the sample of this Outkast song?

is it a sample? did they play it live?

the Scientist was dj-ing on KCRW a long time ago and he played an instrumental version of this song. my friend who heard the broadcast said when they announced the song that it was by the Scientist. could my friend be mistaken?

any clues? i've been searching for years

No idea Jason - hell of a song tho

I'm pretty sure that's live instrumentation on that track. If it *is* a sample it's uncredited. My brother once told me it was the horn section from Earth, Wind, and Fire doing the horn riff, but I've never seen that verified anywhere...

I love the snappy snare!

I believe the sample you're talking about is from Michael Foster Project, a louisiana local brass band.. the song is Red Clay.

nah, they were just jacking the outkast line. the outkast record came out years before that mfp album ('99).

Aquemini came out in 1998 though. But it's not a sample, the people who play the horns and the other instruments on the song are listed on the track credits.

What a song.

in the credits there is a horn player (Darian Emory) listed but if you look at his discography it seems he may only play sax. wouldn't explain the trombone and trumpet. Charles Veal is a string arranger. could be the horns from south central chamber orchestra but they are listed as strings and woodwinds. I recall my friend in college who is a trumpet player had the original sound recording that the horn line is from but I could be wrong... we listened to a lot of outkast back then. who knows?!? I think it is probably Lee Perry or something like that. If not they did a damn fine job of writing an amazing part and recording it so that it sounds like the music of that era.

I think op meant the horns not that guitar line

Anyhoo… the horn line is not a sample, it’s live instrumentation.

In this reddit thread a user says he swears he heard the horn melody in a 60’s reggae/ska song a co-worker used to play on a restaurant he worked in…

it is one of the more elusive of possibly paradigm shifting samples. i honestly could see that reddit anecdote being real. onp infamously talked down their penchant for sampling back in those days and ray murray still actively denies that he lifted the so fresh so clean riff (and maybe they really didn't, but uhh).

There's a link in that reddit thread (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aRFSIPeAFKU) that I accidentally had playing at the same time as "Firth of Fifth" in another tab, and they fit really well!

I don’t think it’s lifted - or at least consciously lifted from something else - the internet hasn’t cracked it yet which makes me think this is just a case of a line so simple and instantly memorable that it feels like something that must have always existed.
