The founding members of Blue Man Group seem to hold the Sex Pistols in high esteem, but the two bands have very little, if anything, in common musically.

any other bands that sound nothing like their predecessors?

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 02:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Form a separate tribute band called "My Bloody Fleetwood."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 02:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Damn, if Kevin Shields had replaced Googe and O'Craplog (that's for that dumb track he had on Loveless) with Fleetwod and MacVie, that MBV album would be out by now...and have a decent rhythm section!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 02:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Masonic Boom the thredd! Over to you, chicken, this thredd's yours.

Charlie (Charlie), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 02:45 (twenty-three years ago)

i thought that Echo and the Bunnymen sounded nothing like the Doors.

Tad (llamasfur), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 02:49 (twenty-three years ago)

You're not alone there, Tad. Cripes, even my DAD said there was a similarity. I've never heard it!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 03:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Iron Maiden and Jethro Tull

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 10:44 (twenty-three years ago)

The Gang Of Four and Free

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 10:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Supremes & TLC

Vic (Vic), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 10:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Hole and Fleetwood Mac.

Disagree. "Malibu" is pure FM (in both senses)

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 11:04 (twenty-three years ago)

x does not sound like Y shockah!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 11:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 11:22 (twenty-three years ago)

For my tuppeny's worth...

Embrace. Beach Boys? Sly Stone? Beastie Boys? Curtis Mayfield? You liars! You bastards!

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 11:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Any current US band (Elephant6 types etc) who claim (or have claims made for them) that they sound like the Beach Boys.

harveyw (harveyw), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 12:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I dont' hear much Bowie in Momus

phil jones (interstar), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 12:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Apparently there was a bit of Mick Jagger in Bowie. Or was it vice versa?

dave q, Tuesday, 4 February 2003 12:48 (twenty-three years ago)

oasis and the beatles.

michael wells (michael w.), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 13:28 (twenty-three years ago)

GYBE! AND CRASS

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 13:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Limp Bizkit/Papa Roach/POD/Saliva/etc. claiming to be influenced by Faith No More, when they all sound as if the only FNM they ever heard was "Epic".

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 14:15 (twenty-three years ago)

It's never made any sense to me why people say Pavement sound like the Fall, who have an actual rhythm section, not to mention somebody with actual personality (not to mention rhythm, too) in his voice.

tiffany, Tuesday, 4 February 2003 18:39 (twenty-three years ago)

One thing that hasn't come up is whether this is a good or bad thing...ie, shameless namedropping vs. being not a tribute band

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 18:47 (twenty-three years ago)

shameless namedropping

I like the idea of shameful namedropping.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 18:47 (twenty-three years ago)

eg. Emerson, Lake, and, uh, the other guy

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 18:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah, "shameful name-dropping", like when I blushingly admit that They Might Be Giants are among my primary formative musical influences.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 18:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Rhythm and Blues and "R & B"

JD (JND), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 19:08 (twenty-three years ago)

R&B is to Rhythm & Blues what George W. Bush is to George H.W. Bush

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 19:10 (twenty-three years ago)

dumber, cooler, more dangerous?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 19:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Daft Punk and Brian Wilson

Curtis Stephens, Tuesday, 4 February 2003 20:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Puddle of Mudd sport Minor Threat and Led Zeppelin t-shirts in their vids, but sound like neither.

Despite being an admitted Yes fan, Pat Smear of the Germs sounds nothing like Steve Howe (`cept for swiping the intro for "Roundabout" on "No God")
