god damn, i hate anything from k records. i can't even sit through a single album. dud.

ernest, Thursday, 14 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like the Halo Benders. Mostly because they got busted on Real Stories of the Highway Patrol and the troopers found weed in the tour van.

classic for releasing heavenly/marine research records in the usa, dud for everything else except for calvin's dancing.

Damn, K Records had such an impact on me, considering that I actually listened to only a few of the records more than a couple of times. I liked a lot of the singles. Whole albums of K - no way. Classic, no, but BH is classic in my world. I was kinda hoping everything would sound like the Go Team or Lois / "Courtney Love", but it didn't, and nothing ever lived up to the descriptions in the catalog.

Mirah, Microphones, Wolf Colonel, classic.

The rest I could care less.

I like Kicking Giant somewhat, and certain songs by the Halo Benders ("Will Work For Food") quite a lot. I'll also admit to enjoying Dub Narcotic Sound System and ICU. There've been some pretty dreadful releases on K, but somehow they always seem at least mildly plausible. I like the way the CDs sound, even if I'm driven off by certain of their tuneless wonders. By the way, what's this about the Halo Benders being on cop TV? I hadn't heard that one. Dub Narcotic and company once stayed in my room and that of my drummer when they came to my college; they were pretty nice.

Oh, what would my life BE without Tiger Trap and the collected output of Rose Melberg?

For all the girls who weren't angry enough for Riot Grrl, yet still weren't silly and fey enough for Twee, K was the place to find respite and relief. Classic.

And My Dead Husband(c) recorded a stunning version of Indian Summer, so that makes Beat Happening good simply by association. ;-)

Glo-Worm, if I'm not mistaken. (Classic.) The rest: haven't a clue.

So, nobody likes The Smiths or Beat Happening. Maybe you like an offshoot of an offshoot or a few chords off an unreleased demo. Is this because it would it be like saying you were friends with the weakest boy in the playground? I mean, I'm not saying I like them or anything.

They lack a sense of humour. So do Whitesnake, until Chuck Eddy invents it without irony. I would like to see a critic fuck over all these cowards by making these guys the names to drop. Some of my friends do spasmodically claim to like these bands as signs of their resistance to peer pressure, but I want more than that. I want someone to rejuvenate them so thoroughly that all previous doubt seems like the whinging of those trying too hard to be cool. The Chuck Eddy treatment.

"I'm not saying I like them or anything."
How do you think that makes them feel, Caroline Yessayan?

This is awesome. It almost makes me wish I was american.

I LOVE BEAT HAPPENING,SOMETIMES I FORGET ABOUT THEM BUT THEN I PUT THEM ON AND THEY ALWAYS SOUND YOUNG AND ALIVE.I ONLY HAVE THE YELLOW ONE WITH THE SPACESHIP ON THE COVER BUT C'MON THESE SONGS ARE SO SIMPLE AND BEAUTIFUL.C'MON.THEY MAKE ME SMILE,MAKE ME WISH EVERYDAY WAS THIS THIS EASY.C'MON.ITS GOOD TO BE YOUNG AND FREE,LIKE A PRETTY FLOWER.OR A BRIGHT YELLOW SUNSET.EACH SONG SOUNDS LIKE THE FIRST TIME AND IT SOUNDS PERFECT.IN THIS TRADITION THEN UP YOURS AND RUN AWAY.

Heavenly's She Says/Escort Crash On Marston Street, that rocked.

I hear that The Legend! popped up on K. Can somebody tell me more?

Keir Hardie, Saturday, 16 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'd like to thank Phil for knowing about Kicking Giant, even if he is only slighly amused by them

Glo-worm early 90s meld of Tracey Thorn, Orange Juice, & early 90s twee-pop still holds up on much of Glimmer ( plus some well known covers)
