the posse: shit by design?

someone said this in the 50 Cent thread:

"eminem knows, like any big rapper, not to let anyone into his 'posse' who might possibly outshine him."

do you think this is true? i guess i always just assumed that most successful rappers always help their crew get records out because they sincerely want their friends to have success too...which i can understand because, for one, if you get rich and all your boys who can rap too are still broke, you wanna do something about it, and also, usually these guys get their own label imprint and sign the other dudes, so if one of them ever becomes more successful than him, he's already in on the ground floor.

of course, it's rare that this happens.. generally, the first guy to hit it big did so for a reason (usually based more on a bankable image than skills, but still...) let's face it, the other guys in the St. Lunatics wouldn't be anywhere without Nelly, and one of 'em might get a gold record out of the association, but it's basically runoff. Jay-Z is always grooming someone to be his successor, but that never pans out. however, I do have my theory about D12 being a white supremacist plot.

Interesting thought ... I wonder if this changed around the time rap stopped organizing itself around brandname posses (eg. Wu Tang Clan) and started being about solo stars. Wu Tang always seemed to go out of the way to promote their talent (even their not so talented talent)

True - just look at what happened to the guys from the Vanilla Ice Posse...

Yeah, but look at what happened to Vanilla Ice.
