do you still wear band T-shirts and such? have you ever though much about why? or if you hate the idea, why? what about other apparel?

and which bands DID produce the best apparel and ephermera?

one thing that irks me is the way the nu-metal scene is so cynically saturated with merchandise, seemingly more so than anything else. kids lap it up - hooded tops and t-shirt sales for Korn, Slipknot, Linkin Park, Incubus and the like have dwarfed anything like that by other bands/genres in the last ten years, maybe more than the heavy metal of the 80s (?) - why do you think this is? why is it so important to wear those bands as brands? does it make a lot of bands seem like hypocrites when this happens?

is it true Depeche Mode have had the biggest merchandise sales in the U.S. if not the world over time? i did hear that on a TV programme once - i suppose it would include concert ticket sales and of course records though.

i really wish the blood brothers had had 'medium' tee shirts in stock when they played london last year, because i am wearing my 'small' and it feels like i've donned a corset...

stevie (stevie), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 15:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I used to wear a Stone Roses t-shirt all the time when I was 16, but I can't remember the last time I bought a band t-shirt. I was tempted at the recent Flips gig, but none of the designs were to my taste. I can't imagine wearing a t-shirt as a proclamation of my fondness for a band anymore, but I can see myself wearing a t-shirt/hat/etcetera related to a band if it was well designed/made. I've got an old Beta Band t-shirt with a stick of dynamite exploding on it which still gets worn, but that's more cos I like pictures of things going *bang!* than anything else.

Ha ha, do some jogging, Mr Chick!

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 15:10 (twenty-three years ago)

i am also wearing my Something Corporate red terrylene wristband. it fits fine, thank you.

stevie (stevie), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 15:12 (twenty-three years ago)

fuck jogging, i just need to drink less than five cans of coca cola a day. damned sugar/caffeine addiction.

stevie (stevie), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 15:13 (twenty-three years ago)

i agree with mr southall on his first post: i actually wear a lot of band t-shirts, but only if i like both the band AND the design.
btw, i always thought stevie was miss chick :-)

joan vich (joan vich), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 15:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah, the dreaded Coca Cola addiction. Emma suffers from this too. Sometimes she claims she craves it. This scares me. I have only ever craved Guinness.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 15:22 (twenty-three years ago)

i agree with joan that tees need to have good designs, not just promote good bands. always buy mine at the merch stand, too, so the bands get their dues.

disagree with joan that i am a miss. i am a mister. sort of.

stevie (stevie), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 15:24 (twenty-three years ago)

i am also a Coke addict

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 15:24 (twenty-three years ago)

when you are thirsty, and it is very very cold and fizzy, it is the best thing ever. i could quit alcohol tomorrow, but would still crave coca cola.

sxxx

stevie (stevie), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 15:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Wow.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 15:31 (twenty-three years ago)

do you still wear band T-shirts and such?

*looks down at MBV Glider EP cover shirt being worn today* No, not at all.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 15:46 (twenty-three years ago)

I hate that most band t-shirts are only XL. I am not even an L, so if I get one, it makes me look like a 12 yr-old

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 15:48 (twenty-three years ago)

handmade silk screened shirts for $8 and under temd to me more classic than $10+ duds.

also, 1" pins = classic

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 15:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm wearing a Tricky shirt promoting his shite last album, but it's a great shirt. I wear a lot of band shirts, but I now refuse to wear them if they're too big. I'm very glad that most bands have small girl-sized shirts these days.

Search: Manowar panties (click on "Ladies Only") I am SO SAD these don't come in my size.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 15:53 (twenty-three years ago)

You can now buy Slipknot hoodies in the Argos catalogue. How weird is that?

Jason J, Tuesday, 4 February 2003 17:05 (twenty-three years ago)

its hilarious!

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 17:35 (twenty-three years ago)

I guess I only like music tee's if it's subtle. I got a Hieroglyphics shirt that doesn't say their name anywhere on it.

Oops (Oops), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 17:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Wasn't it Ned's Atomic Dust Bin whose series of T-shirts made more money than their live shows?

christoff (christoff), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 17:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Personal favourite item of apparel: 4 or 5 years ago, I had Pulp knickers. They said "Are You Sure?"

I lost them somewhere.

Kate Dornan, Tuesday, 4 February 2003 17:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Wasn't it Ned's Atomic Dust Bin whose series of T-shirts made more money than their live shows?

Lord knows I bought enough of them.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 17:52 (twenty-three years ago)

So Ned, are they cool or you just a sucka?

christoff (christoff), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 18:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes and yes. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 18:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I own Neds Atomic Dustbin t-shirts too.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 18:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Did they glow in the dark?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 18:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Most of the gigs I've been to recently have had the tossed-off-the-production-line-in-ten-minutes t-shirts that just have the bands name in that 'baseball' lettering no matter what the band are actually like. Don't really bother with them anyway now, but I'd really like one of those black ones with the Unknown Pleasures artwork on.

The merch stalls at Reading had a good Pulp one of a cartoon woman screaming 'FAILURE' at her baby. That's not as good as the knickers.

Ferg (Ferg), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 19:53 (twenty-three years ago)

liars were doing hand-screened thrift store merch for a while. i'm the proud owner of a wicked baby blue sweatshirt emblazoned with dark blue spacemen.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 20:47 (twenty-three years ago)

The two Delgados t-shirts I got on Sunday were pretty g'damn
swanky. One's got HATE written in the AC/DC style... and I have
this strange feeling I'm the only one what cares...

And, oh what the hell, don't forget.......

Shania Twain's Ramones T-shirt: C/D?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 21:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Hi Alex!

Look at this person! What a poser. I wouldn't wear that if you paid me!

:)

I get tons of mileage out of the line "Everyday, rock and roll is saving my life." If there's any attitude behind it the gig's up, but deadpan? Classic.

My favourite merchandise is the Sky Motel key tag that came with Kristin Hersh's album of the same name. I've also got a nifty Sloan guitar pick, plus a sticker of Andrew Scott on my guitar. I've still ot a complete Sloan sticker sheet saved up.

Best t-shirt? A black Stereolab with a big blue fist, upraised in the centre.

derrick (derrick), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 04:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I prize my Modern Lovers T-shirt (looks like the first LP cover).

nickn (nickn), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 07:04 (twenty-three years ago)

I used to have a number of pairs of band shorts....Ramones, Hard-ons, Ratcat, RHCP, Nirvana. I haven't seen band shorts in years.

frownland (frownland), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 10:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I still think the Bardo Pond pillow cases are the best merch ever.

Chris Barrus (xibalba), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 10:24 (twenty-three years ago)

The 'LOVE' coffee mug is highly revered in my household!

marianna, Wednesday, 5 February 2003 11:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Horace: if you're talking to me, no, they didn't glow in the dark. Perhaps they were meant to be quick fumble behind the bike sheds in the cold Northern mid-afternoon knickers. That's not where I lost them, I hasten to add.

one year passes...
About half way down the 'specials' page at www.turbonegro.com is one of the best bits of merch I've seen for ages - a wee music box that plays one of their songs. killer

nineteen years pass...

https://dcist.com/story/23/09/18/wolf-trap-tomberlin-show-merchandise-fees/

Singer Tomberlin calls out non-profit venue Wolf Trap that is in Wolf Trap National Park for taking 41 % of tshirt merch money, and a high percentage of music sales merch as well. Wolf Trap sadly defends itself and WOlf Trap CEo makes big $. IMP productions /930 CLub/Anthem/Merr Post Pavilion/ Lincoln Theatre which just opened new Atlantis club also defends practice despite having gotten govt funds to help build new Atlantis

Jeff Rosenstock tweets re merch cuts are mentioned in that article too (and I think this was discussed on some other thread but I forgot which one)

Small DC club Songbyrd notes it lets artists keep 100 % of merch revenue,
A note: Songbyrd believes that artists should retain 100% of in-venue merch sales and is pleased to sign the @UMAW_ @FeaturedArtists #MyMerch pledge; also, the convo should go beyond one that pits artists vs. venues & looks at the many cost pressures on the small, indie industry
