-Matt, dodging the obvious.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Holy Hell, somebody else is familiar with Phantom of the Paradise!?!

*jaw-drops*

I lean toward Paradise, not just because I can't stand KISS (they did Phantom of the Park, right?), but 'cause it was groovy and creepy.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

As much as I loved Kiss at the time (and still love them now, although the love I feel for them now is more the love you show for senile old relatives who can no longer feed themselves), "Kiss Meets the Phantom of the Park" is just plain ol' indefensible. I'd love to say 'it's so bad that it's good,' like "Showgirls" or something, but it's just not. It's bad, bad, bad. Not even the "Rip, Rip, Rip & Destroy" segment can save it. It really was the beginning of the end for them, the first in a credibility-flushing series of mis-steps.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 21:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow. I dropped a jaw. You've made my day.

Personally, i prefer _Paradise_, because Paul Williams is an unsung genius.

-Matt, a sucker for the classics.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 21:57 (twenty-two years ago)

PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE alllll the way. Cuz the jokes in that are MEANT to be funny. DePalma rox.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 00:15 (twenty-two years ago)

And also because Bauhaus sampled it.

"Who are YOU?!!!"

"My CARD...pretty LADY!"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 00:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Holy Hell, somebody else is familiar with Phantom of the Paradise!?!

Not only do I own the film, I have the soundtrack LP! I get all excited and crazy when thinking about this movie, it just holds a strange appeal for me. I don't know if Paul Williams is an unsung genius, I haven't explored his career enough for that (give me time), but in Phantom he's perfectly cast as the creepy, smarmy villian. And what a peculiar vocal delivery he has; does he always talk like that? And (introducing) Jessica Harper singing! And (especially) dancing! And Gerritt Graham as effeminate glam rocker Beef! And directed by Brian DePalma! It really is great.

Sean (Sean), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 00:53 (twenty-two years ago)

phantom of the paradise all the way!!! i saw that as a kid and was slightly disgusted by it, until i realised that i actually *loved* it.

paul williams has always been present in my family life. my ma hates his guts, my sis used to play some of his songs repeatedly, and i think he's super cool.

cecilia, Wednesday, 5 February 2003 02:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Jessica Harper's audition dance=proto-Elaine.

Shame about the actual songs, though. And the completely unappealing male lead.

Arthur (Arthur), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 03:58 (twenty-two years ago)

The songs from that movie are top-notch. One of my bands covered "Beauty & the Beast", another did "Somebody Super Like You" (very similar songs, BTW, just arranged differently). Excellent soundtrack, pretty good movie, if very dated. I thought Jessica Harper was hot, too, "Elaine" (I don't see it) or not.

matt riedl (veal), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

"The Party of the First Part" by Bauhaus samples "Phantom of the Paradise"? Are you sure about that? The dialogue on that track sounds much older, but you might be right. Must investigate.

Also, the Phantom in "Phantom of the Paradise" is much cooler than the Phantom (Dr. Abner Deveraux....and it pains me that I can recall his nae) in Kiss' cinematic cowpie.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

"The Party of the First Part" by Bauhaus samples "Phantom of the Paradise"? Are you sure about that?

Pretty darn well positive. And given all the references to rock music in the samples, it certainly can't be that much older.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't believe I'm saying this, but now I wanna hear a song by Bauhaus.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

"Party of the First Part" isn't really your average Bauhaus track -- imagine a loose instrumental ala "The Gift" by the Velvet Underground that offsets a strange, Faustian narrative.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

....to be found on the BBC compilation, SWING THE HEARTACHE, if you're that curious.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I was also being a bit facetious. After having a surprisingly enjoyable listen to Joy Division's "Closer" last night and a steady diet of new wave on VH1 Classic (where I actually saw the "Eighties" video recently!) I'm curious to hear more goth stuff. And goth that features "Phantom Of The Paradise" samples sounds kinda nice.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm curious to hear more goth stuff

Good, good. The primrose path you will follow runs something like this:

JD (already done) -> Bauhaus -> Siouxsie -> the Cure -> the Sisters of Mercy -> Dead Can Dance -> (various other steps) -> eventually, the Smashing Pumpkins. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

(More seriously -- y'all want to hear more, I can make arrangements via CDR or something...)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

The Smashing Pumpkins aren't fuckin' goths.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Billy Corgan onstage with Bauhaus:

Of course, he *could* just be a poseur. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Lovely logic, Uncle Ned. I have to work my way to the MTV stars, right. Just like all the fratboys here I just saw buying the Zwan album.

For my generation it goes like this.

Smashing Pumpkins -> the Cure -> Joy Division -> Bauhaus -> "GAH, I DO BELIEVE I'VE HAD ENUFF!!! What's on MTV? AHHH, ZWAN! I'm back where I started!"

Hee, you know I've probably heard more old Siouxsie stuff than most my age. They only know about "Kiss Them For Me." I've heard "Peek-A-Boo!" Hee hee hee.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I have to work my way to the MTV stars, right.

I think of it this way -- the MTV stars had their roots too. (Actually, I forgot Gary Numan in that list.)

Just like all the fratboys here I just saw buying the Zwan album.

You know, fratboys buy Limp Bizkit albums as well. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Corgan may be a fan of the `haus, but that doesn't make his crappy band "goths". Listen to GISH, fer chrissakes! That's not Goth!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

is the pre-gish stuff goth? i always suspected it...

as for phantom, i was always intrigued by the prediction that an audience would desire a more shocking show until the point they were watching death as entertainment.

Laney, Wednesday, 5 February 2003 21:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Pre-Gish -- yeah, pretty gothy in parts. Lots of Cure worshipping, which is obviously a good thing. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 22:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know, man. When I think proper "GOTH," I take out my dark crystal of infernal reckoning and conjure bands like, say, The March Violets, The Sisters of Mercy, the Fields of the Nephilim, the Mission and loads of other largely since-forgotten British bands, not a bunch of mewling, twerpy wannabes from Chicago like the Smashing Pumpkins.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 22:41 (twenty-two years ago)

ned i would love a goth cdr compiled by you

chaki (chaki), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 22:49 (twenty-two years ago)

DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!

It shall be done. Oh, and BTW, the lyrics to the Pumpkins' "Here is No Why" -- clearly he wasn't a gothboy at all! ;-)

"the useless drag of another day
the endless drags of a death rock boy
mascara sure and lipstick lost
glitter burned by restless thoughts
of being forgotten
and in your sad machines
you'll forever stay
desperate and displeased-with whoever you are
and you're a star
somewhere-he pulls his hair down-over a frowning smile
a hidden diamond you cannot find
a secret star that cannot shine over to you
may the king of gloom, be forever doomed
and in your sad machines
you'll forever stay
burning up in speed
lost inside the dreams, of teen machines
the useless drags, the empty days
the lonely towers of long mistakes
to forgotten faces and faded loves
sitting still was never enough
and if you're giving in, then you're giving up
cause in your sad machines
you'll forever stay
burning up in speed
lost inside the dreams, of teen machines"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 23:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Dangit, Ned! Why'd you have to go turn this perfectly good thread into a high-school poetry class? And by that i mean poetry written by high-schoolers...

-Matt, who liked 'em better when they were shameless MBV imitators.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Thursday, 6 February 2003 00:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Heh heh heh. I knew that reaction would happen. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 6 February 2003 00:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Which? The high school poetry crack or the MBV imitators crack?

-Matt, wondering if there'll ever be a _Paradise_ and _Rocky Horror_ 2-disc gift set...

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Thursday, 6 February 2003 00:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Both, natch.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 6 February 2003 00:25 (twenty-two years ago)

That's a fair cop.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Thursday, 6 February 2003 00:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Can we please resume talking about Phantom now?

"Filters... Dolbys..."

Sean (Sean), Thursday, 6 February 2003 00:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I WISH BEEF WAS REAL. I WISH SWAN WAS REAL. I WISH THE MOVIE WAS REEEEL LIFE. I WISH I WISH I WISH.

There.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 6 February 2003 02:23 (twenty-two years ago)

(the above are from kiss meets the phantom of the park)

Eisbaer, Thursday, 12 April 2007 06:51 (eighteen years ago)

The correct answer to everything is Phantom of the Paradise.

marmotwolof, Thursday, 12 April 2007 07:02 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, paradise.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Thursday, 12 April 2007 08:23 (eighteen years ago)

three years pass...

Listening to Phantom Of Paradise OST this evening so I thought I'd see what you Ilxors had to say about it (happy to see positive comments, cuz it's great) and saw this:

The Party of the First Part" by Bauhaus samples "Phantom of the Paradise"? Are you sure about that?

Pretty darn well positive. And given all the references to rock music in the samples, it certainly can't be that much older.

It's actually from a Nelvana cartoon called "The Devil & Daniel Mouse".
