they're playing the music of Steve Lacy and have special guests Otomo Yoshihide, Ikue Mori, and Nels Cline

and will my girlfriend hate it? (should i invite a friend with more experimental tastes in music)

I saw them a long, long time ago, and still have a tape of some of their music. It's definitely pretty adventurous and out at times. What sort of stuff does your girlfriend like?

My wife very much enjoyed the show of theirs that we went to together; they are out there but also put on a great show.

no, jason, that would be "saxomaphone."
saxomaphone.... saxomaphone.
my favorite instrument after the tubamaba and the obomaboe.

Saw ROVA on the same bill as C. Palestine and Stefan Jaowrzyn a few years ago - four middle-aged college profs playing diff. compositions on a variety of reeds, moderately 'out' but still basically music of a known sort, v. pro and tasteful, but not a waste of time either. The addition of Otomo, Ikue and Nels cld make it a v. special evening, but may also increase the scaring-the-non-jazz-lovin'-gf quotient considerably.

You can depend on Rova for a great night out.

Haven't heard Steve Lacy's stuff, looking forward to it. I hear a lot of pro-Nels Cline swoony fandom from my female friends...

I'm going to both nights, really looking forward to their full blown cover of Coltrane's Ascension with Fred Frith, Otomo again, and Carla Kihlstadt.

It's very chamber-ish stuff. They had a great drummer the one time I saw them; it was some aniversary show (25th?). I don't think it's all that abrasive or anything.

As Andrew L alluded to, if it was just Rova by themselves, I wouldn't be too worried about scaring away the un-initiated. When I saw them they were pleasantly sonorous, tuneful and accessible - not any scarier than someone like Philip Glass, I'd say. But the ride could get a bit bumpier if Nels and Otomo decide to go into noise-terrorist mode.
