Nikka Costa: Completely Devoid of Talent or Simply Shitty? (Alex in NYC)

So, I'm sitting here at 3:10 am mindlessly watching VH1 (stuck at work, Vampire shift) and the video for "Like a Feather" by the much-touted Nikka Costa comes on. Now, is it me, or does this wretched woman have absolutely zero going for her? Basically, the video serves no other purpose than to showcase Nikka's chest and mic-flailing skills. Sure, the fluctuating bass line is infectious, but that has precious little to do with her. Her voice is cloying and thin, the lyrics are banal, and the whole thing is just embarassing.

Or am I just being too judgmental?

Alex in NYC, Friday, 15 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dude, it's all about the timbre and vocal distortion. Oh, and the handclaps.

Dan Perry, Friday, 15 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Very little going for her at all. The song is dull and her vocal is barely there. That bass IS great though. Her previous album was sort of an indie-alt-rock-pop thing and it sunk. Like a stone. And it stunk. Like a turd. Except one song that wasn't too bad, darned if I could remember its name.

EdwardO, Friday, 15 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Argh. This woman makes me want to rant like the Manics. She makes Macy Gray look like Nina Simone.

Nicole, Friday, 15 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

We are NOT actually going to start calling out songs with banal lyrics, are we? We'll never get any work done if we do that all day.

Her voice on this song is the result of the production - makes her sound like Erykah Badu on "On & On" (that wispy, old-fashioned, Billie Holiday sound). I'm all for subdued funky songs, like this & "Bootylicious". And the oh-so-small guitar break makes me think of T. Rex. Steven Tyler-esque stage presence = a plus.

I'll take Nikka's feather over Nelly's bird any time.

David Raposa, Friday, 15 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Good point, David.....while Nikka may be a fountain of uselessness, she's not a tenth as crap as Nelly Furtado.

alex in nyc, Friday, 15 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nikka Costa is the worst thing currently going, full stop. She's brutal. I wish Nelly Furtado would stab her or something.

Ally, Friday, 15 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It'd be nice if they stabbed each other. I'd pay to see that.

Why won't Nelly Furtado make good on her threat and fly away already?

alex in nyc, Friday, 15 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like that song. The one on MTV, right? Sorry, I like it. I like the leg kicks, I think her mic-flailing skillz are topp, okay she's not singing at all. Okay she's in another luxury spaceship made out of neon. Okay, if she had dreads and was even cockier it would all be Lenny Kravitz and I'd hate it.

But I like it. I do believe I'd dance if i heard it in a club.

Tracer Hand, Friday, 15 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nelly Furtado has totally redeemed herself in my eyes by mutating into a demented toastmaster on helium of the "Get Ur Freak On" remix. She also sounds amazingly freaked out on her newwest single, "Turn Of The Light".

Dan Perry, Friday, 15 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah, "Turn Off The Light" has this chorus that I can't get out of my head, and it may be cutesy as all hell, but I don't care, it's fun. Nelly Furtado's album is pretty decent, actually.

Patrick, Friday, 15 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nelly Furtado's album is fantastic, Turn Off The Lights is awesome. Nikka Costa should be scalped.

That is sincerely all there is to it. I"m putting my foot down on this one.

Ally, Friday, 15 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think I've seen that Nikki Costa video about a hundred times now, and I still have no idea how the song goes. She reminds me of Sandra Bernhard's character from "The King of Comedy".

Kris, Friday, 15 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I actually listened to that whole Nikka Costa album today. She does the sexy thing well, especially in the feather single and vid. But she just has no range at all. A one trick pony.

bnw, Friday, 15 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Kris: exactly!!! now I know why I like it. never mind.

Tracer Hand, Friday, 15 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Has any of you seen Nikka Costa perform live with her band? Well I have and it was amazing. The album is too Lenny Kravitz for me, but the live show was tight as hell.

JoB, Friday, 15 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

favourite typo on rockcritics.com = "one- trock pony"

mark s, Friday, 15 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like the shot in the video where she's humping the floor and they cut down UNDER her. Nice little shock shot.

Huh. Ok. So would you rather hear about 50 million boy and girl bands blasting over your radio with the same song with the same lyrics over and over again...or you know, another Aerosmith reunion, or a completely stolen and contrived Lenny Kravitz song.. or do you want to hear some funky ass shit, penetrating the current bullshit music scene with pop-soul? Look. I have both Nelly and Nikka's CDs. I think some of the lyrics are weak, and at times, I'm dissapointed by the *lack* of soul these "soulful" women have. (I mean..Aretha was my life when I was growing up..I'd rather listen to Mariah Carey than Nikka or Nelly anyday)...But I believe they are shattering the glass of the aquariums of bubblegum pop music, where every fish swimming is swimming because it's 16 years old with a 19 inch waist and 32C tits. I think Macy Gray (although I'm damn sick of her now) opened up a really important door for a different breed of female musicians, of which I completely relate to as a soulpumped acoustic female musician. Nikka's been a star in Australia, and basically everywhere else besides the US, for YEARS. So, she's not anything brand new, and it's interesting how America thinks that everything only truly exists when it gets in thru the borders. I'd rather see Nikka's cleavage than Britney Spears'. At least Nikka's over the age of 18. Maybe the music's too mature for you. And what the hell is wrong with using the tools that technology has given music? The effects put on her voice in "Like a Feather" are what make the song..that and the amazing use of rhythm and bass. Open up your eyes. These women are doing great things for music right now. And even if we give all the props to the producers, these are the women who are standing in the forefront of this "movement". _Eda_

i think that both nelly n nikki are good artists n if u dont think so thne y dont u all go out there n try n do wot they're doin. obviously they're doin somthing right cos they've got their albums n record deals, so stop knocking them. i love like a feather it gets me in the mood to dance, i dont c u doin that for me!

marie mitchell, Thursday, 30 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nikka sucks. Nelly Furtado sucks less.

Lindsey B, Friday, 31 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nikka Costa made a brief appearance on the MTV 20th anniversary show, and it was unfortunate. She was giggling the whole time, and dropping a few f-bombs off the cuff, Slash style. Also, she kept fidgeting with her hair, and posing for the audience. It might have been cute if she hadn't been so high. Plus, she talks a lot like Fran Drescher.

dleone, Friday, 31 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have never heard this person, but I am willing to have a very good guess that she is abominable.

the pinefox, Friday, 31 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Clarification for y'all: she may have released an album of pub rock that bombed, but Nikka was NEVER a star in Australia. We may refuse entry to refugees but we do have some principles.

Hmmm... from the sounds of it, the majority of you are too young to remember the 70's and listen to the likes of Britney Spears and Backstreet boys. One word: PITY

Tom in CA, Wednesday, 26 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I actually like her song a lot. FWIW I like "I'm Like a Bird" too

dave q, Thursday, 27 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Hmmm... from the sounds of it, the majority of you are too young to remember the 70's and listen to the likes of Britney Spears and Backstreet boys. One word: PITY"

are you for real? nikka costa is designed for those who think the best parts of funk were the clothes. i'd rather listen to muzak versions of parliament songs -- at least those have some shred of credibility to them.

maura, Thursday, 27 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the best parts of funk ARE the clothes.

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 27 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah so most of Nikka’s songs are mediocre, but a some of the songs are damn good and far less tedious than some of the 70’s funk crap with horn playing till you go unconscious s***. To add to this, she has a hell of a stage presence for a 5 foot 2 woman, (lets see K.C. and the sunshine band make those moves; still white and tight). The first time that I saw or heard of her was on the Chris Rock show, not being live obviously, but sure as hell not a music only format, where her mic skills were reminiscent of James Brown and Prince, she knows how to work. Conclusion: She may be a flash in the pan, but this one US album is worth owning in my opinion and it is a pleasant bridge between mainstream and shake your ass music. [ I tend to only like Nelly Furtado’s re-mixes and don’t own her album so I will not comment on it].

CB, Friday, 28 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I love Nikka's CD and everything she has going for her. She's got a unique voice and awesome moves, and she gives off a 'No Bullshit' attitude. She's like a breath of fresh air from all of those pop star bimbos, and I definitely am grateful.

All that matters is that she's absolutely beautiful

Ian, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If by that you mean "horrible", then yes.

Ally, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Peaches and Nikka Costa should do a show of duets together. THey could call it "Sandra Bernhard Appreciation Hour". I heard that Peaches show at Webster Hall sucked by the way - marred by very poor sound and no monitoring, so her minidisc was off by about 1/2 second from her vocals... yikes.

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 18 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

to the person who was goning unconsious from the 70's funk band horn playing, you must have been sleeping thru the whole thing. There is no music greater than such bands as Sly and the Family Stone, Average White Band, Macio, and James Brown. Just about all the music you listen to today is some sort of offspring of the 70's funk. I wonder if Britney,N'Sync,Christina, and the other bubble gummers have ever heard of New Kids on the Block. If not, then they will, because they are next. As for the classics of JB Horns and Parliment, they will never die. About Nikke Costa: She is hard core and refreshing to listen to. So what if you don't like the video. Half the videos out there are contrived and boring, but it's the music that counts. Start listening to music with your ears instead of your eyes. You just may learn something.

christine peterson, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It does seem fair to judge someone by their looks & and video if they choose to have themselves marketed so intensely in those arenas.

I'm a little intrigued by the number of diehard fans that Nikka inspires, as well as the repeated comment of, "Listen to the music," written to people who apparently are obsessive about listening to music. There's a zealousness to her admirers that has given me the only hate mail i've ever received when i slammed her once months ago.

Does Nikka live up to Parliament and Sly Stone to your ear?

badger, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh Hell No.

JM, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i could amen a Hell No on that. I'm curious on the Believer. when i get the hate mail, and i beg them to educate me on the glories of Nikka, they never write back.

badger, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Is it that I am obsessive about listening to music or that I am entitled to my opinion. I'm a bass player in a band playing such artists as Sly, the Meters, Scolfield, Mayfiield, Greyboy Allstars, etc..Do I learn these songs by watching videos? Listening is what I do. If you read my last reply I was making two seperate comments. 1-was that the horn and funk bands of the 60's 7 70's where and still are some of the best music played. 2-I made a small comment to those who judged Nikki's music strictly by the ONE video they have seen. I recall saying she was refreshing to listen to compared to the so-so-bubble gum artists that are out there today. NO WHERE in my comments did I compare her to the classics. There ARE different kinds of good music. It is a shame that the only way that artists now a days can sell their music is by displaying themselves. It's not about talent anymore. It's all about good looks, tight asses, and providing a video suitable to entertain the mindless vidoe addicts who can't HEAR the music unless it is visually put before them. And even then it's only about what they see.

christine peterson, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But she looks and sounds like death, what's your point?

Ally, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

There is no point. Just an opinion. But if you read it and understood it for what it says then you wouldn't have to ask again. It is YOUR opinion that she "looks and sounds like death" and it is MY opinion that you couldn't think of anything more intelligent to say than "what's your point". I am not a die hard fan of Nikki Costa, but I do believe she is worth checking out musically. And that is JUST MY OPINION. It is not an attack on all video junkies.

Nikka looked really great and had wonderful mic-flailing skills. And for that alone she's better than 50% of what I've seen on VH1. I miss her.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 28 April 2003 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

and Nelly Furtado's "Turn Off The Lights" was great both visually (thanks to a typically gorgeous and idiosyncratic Sophie Muller video) and musically (the most joyful Erykah Badu song ever). Most of her other stuff was really annoying though.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 28 April 2003 21:11 (twenty-two years ago)

i liked "like a feather" quite a lot. the video added to its excellence, too. nikka is clearly quite a fox. nelly furtado is just awful, i don't like the two being compared!

I keep hearing a Nelly Furtado duet on the radio pretty much nonstop- hold on as I google - ok, 'Grammy award winning Colombian singer Juanes' Not bad, but maybe just 'coz been drummed into my brain.

H (Heruy), Monday, 28 April 2003 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

The content of this thread gives me the suspicious feeling that Nikka Costa fans have been Googling their beloved's name, keep turning up this thread, and decide to post the occasional diatribe when they discover that their heroine is being viciously defamed. It's actually sort of funny, like the time ILM was flooded by KJ mailing-list fans swarming in to the defense of their hoarse-throated heroes. (Caveat: I like KJ.)

All I know about Nikka Costa is I share a name with her husband / producer, which makes it damn inconvenient for me to Google my own name out of narcissism.

justin s., Tuesday, 29 April 2003 05:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Well I'm not a Googler and I think the song kicks.
Persistently catchy, and her voice is tops.

I can't help but think that many people were turned
off by her AWFUL video, which features her cavorting
about in a boa and making an utter fool of herself.
She succeeds in looking about as sexy as Jodie Foster
in _Taxi Driver_.

A friend burned the album for me. It was a big
dissapointment on first listen - only one or two
good songs beside "Like A Feather." I've warmed
on it with time, though.

"Like a Feather" has an arrangement Nelly Furtado woulda traded her whole career for. Instead, she traded her career for a new publicist, so she didn't go away like she was supposed to.
