Because only a certain group of people really "get it."

Are BoC lovers the hippies of IDM?

Polo Pony, Wednesday, 5 February 2003 04:44 (twenty-three years ago)

then who or what is the 'brown acid' of IDM?

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 04:46 (twenty-three years ago)

squarepusher

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 05:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Is Richard D. James the Frank Zappa of IDM?

Polo Pony, Wednesday, 5 February 2003 06:20 (twenty-three years ago)

you need to make more direct parallels than that before that question becomes a subject for debate

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 06:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Direct parallels between the Dead and the Boards?

Deadheads who think Jerry is magikal.
Boardheads? who think Marc and Matt are magikal.

Potheads, acid eaters, rural, communal similarities. You know what I'm saying.

"Whoa...trippy shit!"

Polo Pony, Wednesday, 5 February 2003 07:20 (twenty-three years ago)

actually, the one group nowadays that reminds me most of the Grateful Dead is Sigur Ros. but that might be because i hate both the Dead and Sigur Ros.

Rainbow People = roygbiv

enough direct parallels yet?

Polo Pony, Wednesday, 5 February 2003 07:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I now SEE the light!

Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 08:32 (twenty-three years ago)

those are direct?

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 08:34 (twenty-three years ago)

They don't have as many shows to trade.

brg30 (brg30), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 15:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Sigur Ros would be a good candidate but the early Dead were a pop band, or an attempt at one -- SR, or anyone, needs to release/to have released oodles of records before the comparison can really be made, I think.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 16:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Anyway I don't think I know any Boards Of Canada or Sigur Ros fans who are even close to being hippies. Hipsters, maybe..

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 16:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes but are said fans analogous to what hippies were in the heyday of the Dead? I like the idea behind this thread a lot & am willing to stretch things a bit just to keep it going

J0hn Darnielle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 16:12 (twenty-three years ago)

on the inside looking out so i wouldn't know. i couldn't even hum a grateful dead tune.

michael wells (michael w.), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 16:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Musically, the only similarity between the Dead and BoC is they both have rhythm and melody and maybe they have used an envelope filter to process an instrument. Of course, there are millions of Dead fans and maybe less than 100,000 BoC fans worldwide. I just posed the question for fun.

Polo Pony, Wednesday, 5 February 2003 17:06 (twenty-three years ago)

I think the most interesting part of BoC (compared to the rest of the gauzy synth/soft beats movement) is how their fans listen to their tracks backwards for hidden messages, references to branch davidians, dodgy pagan practices, ufo abductions, faery circles, anti-government blah blah blah...

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 6 February 2003 00:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Nah BOC are the Neptunes of IDM

Keith McD (Keith McD), Thursday, 6 February 2003 02:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Go on, explain. I would think Black Dog are the Neptunes.

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 6 February 2003 02:57 (twenty-three years ago)

not untill there's and idm group that people religeously follow their live performances

dyson (dyson), Thursday, 6 February 2003 02:58 (twenty-three years ago)

IDM is the grateful dead of genres.

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 6 February 2003 03:02 (twenty-three years ago)

IT's the navel-gazing gestures of respective fans amidst middling to mediocre music which makes the comparison apt. And I like BoC.
