i like 'Magic Fly' - what do you think of the Felix Housekat version?

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 12:59 (twenty-two years ago)

My god, you mean they're STILL TOGETHER?!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

haha! i've been obsessed with this ever since i heard francois kervorkian play it at sankey's soap last year. wrong headedly mistook it for moroder's - theme from midnight express/the chase - but the penny dropped when there was a snippit of it on that electropop top 10 on c4 the other week. got a mate to download it and i eagerly await the weekend when i'll bounce around my bedroom to the cdr he's going to burn for me. it sounded utterly amazing on the dancefloor, late on, that stately bpm after a couple of hours of pounding tech house, those starburst sprays of synth...aaah, memories. CLASSIC!! in case you hadn't guessed.

Sorry, are we talking about Space the shit Britpop band here?

Matt: No. But in answer to your question before that, yes.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I ahve an lp of theirs - its great.

tigerclawskank, Wednesday, 5 February 2003 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, Cerrone. I've actually got Supernature on vinyl.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

who did that Eurodancey cover/remix of 'Magic Fly' in the mid 90s? siegbran to thread?

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

the whole 'Magic Fly' LP is pretty great, especially the last track.

Cerrone did some excellent disco tracks. 'Cerrone's Paradise' has 'Give Me Love' and Cerrone 3 has 'Supernature' as mentioned already. His Don Ray productions are good too, like 'Standing In the Rain' and 'Got to Have Loving'. Cerrone's stuff isn't really laid-back though, it's quite melodramatic

michael (michael), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

S Club Juniors have done a Magic Fly Remix of 'New Direction',not great but quite well done, backing track is almost exactly the same as the original.Gino Soccio is also worth checking out, also Sparks''No 1 in Heaven'LP,'Automatic Lover'by Dee D Jackson,Mike Oldfield's 'Guilty',Giorgio Moroder's 'From Here to Eternity',Tantra's'Hills of Katmandu'

Paul R (paul R), Thursday, 6 February 2003 00:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I got a Tom Moulton mix of Magic Fly t'other week, see, that kind of beefs it up a little and I was wondering how much love there was for the original...

Jacob (Jacob), Thursday, 6 February 2003 10:02 (twenty-two years ago)

this has been the best thread on ILM for ages. thanks. i'm tempted to throw out my cerrone mp3s and buy some of the bloody stuff. the felix version of Magic Fly is a bit lacking innit.

Alan (Alan), Thursday, 6 February 2003 13:00 (twenty-two years ago)

did Erasure cover Cerrone's 'Supernature' or is that a totally different song?

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 6 February 2003 13:14 (twenty-two years ago)

is it about strange genetic experiments that go wrong? if so, yes!

michael (michael), Thursday, 6 February 2003 13:49 (twenty-two years ago)

jacob, where did you get the tom moulton remix?

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 6 February 2003 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Minimalistix, Nalin (of Nalin & Kane, that ibiza-style house stuff), Space Brothers and Trance Atlantic Airwaves all did remixes/covers of "Magic Fly".

And the Bob Sinclar-produced Cerrone stuff is great!

Siegbran (eofor), Thursday, 6 February 2003 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Michael - I got it on my record-shopping trip to florida, from a random junk shop in St Petersburg...

Jacob (Jacob), Thursday, 6 February 2003 18:49 (twenty-two years ago)

There's some good stuff on Faze Action's unmixed comp. for obsessive. I'm especially thrilled with Mandre (as in, the guy's real name is Andre).

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 6 February 2003 18:53 (twenty-two years ago)

thanks jacob. now i have to way up whether it's worth the $400 flight costs!

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 7 February 2003 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, you can also get an infinite number of copies of Expose's "Point of no return" for a buck apiece, so that's gotta be worth something...

In a strange confluence of my niche interests, Didier Marouani of Space has been arrested for allegedly attempting to extort €1m from 'eccentric' Russian pop star Filipp Kirkorov.

As far as i can tell, Marouani is trying to sue Kirkorov for some fairly blatant plagiarism and has had the cops set on him.

LOL at people mistaking the French electronic Space for the Britpop Space!
