To counter the optimism of the other thread ( Songs about survival (and hope) in our society ) let's have the opposite. "We're doomed!"

This might be the only one including all of the above that actually contains *the words* "We're all fucked":

Chris T-T's "Sellotape"

I give up, we're all fucked
a pile of bodies for the dustbin man
it was a party where the truth spilled out
and people woke up with a different plan
a skinny hippy, in the kitchen
doing magic - turning water into wine
it looked dodgy but it tasted fine...

Charlie (Charlie), Thursday, 6 February 2003 05:01 (twenty-three years ago)

"One Hundred Years" by The Cure. In fact most of the "Pornography" album.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Thursday, 6 February 2003 05:15 (twenty-three years ago)

The song itself is full of hope, but after 'Dr Strangelove' I always associate 'We'll meet again' with Armageddon.

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 6 February 2003 13:55 (twenty-three years ago)

If everyone in the world listened to Quasi's Featuring "Birds" at the same time I am convinced the resulting collective disgust would destroy the known universe.

Nick Mirov (nick), Thursday, 6 February 2003 16:52 (twenty-three years ago)

"We All Want Out" by Ghosts of Modern Man, features the great line "yeah we all want out, so we can all get out and be the CEOs of our disgusting town"

worth looking for

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 6 February 2003 16:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Ooh. Quasi. yes. "California" is brilliantly twisted.
"Life is dull, life is grey, at it's best it's just OK, but I'm happy to report... life is also SHORT"

How about the Gothic Archies, esp "The Abandoned Castle Of My Soul", too? Tho that's more "I'M doomed"...

Leonard Cohen: Who By Fire

kornrulez6969, Monday, 16 November 2015 20:33 (ten years ago)

Wrote some other incredible songs: the Searchers' "Take Me for What I'm Worth," Herman's Hermits' "Must to Avoid," the Turtles' "Can I Get to Know You Better," others.

(For the thread, I'd add Husker Du's "Everything Falls Apart" as being definitive: "Everything is so fucked up/I guess we like it that way.")

clemenza, Monday, 16 November 2015 20:33 (ten years ago)

(xpost--was talking about P.F. Sloan)

clemenza, Monday, 16 November 2015 20:34 (ten years ago)

Oh geez I didn't see the PF Sloan thing. RIP

kornrulez6969, Monday, 16 November 2015 20:34 (ten years ago)

As I noted elsewhere, I just saw PF Sloan interviewed at the Ponderosa Stomp in New Orleans a little while back; and he played acoustic and sung at the interview; and did a set with a band later that night at the Stomp

That’s Cool, That’s Trash
Featuring P.F. Sloan and moderator Todd Abramson
Presented by Shout Factory
Los Angeles singer, songwriter, and guitarist P.F. Sloan recounts his unsung journey through rock ‘n’ roll history as a member of the Wrecking Crew and his role in helping create 1960s classics such as “Secret Agent Man,” “Eve of Destruction,” and “California Dreamin’.” Sloan is interviewed by WFMU disc jockey Todd Abramson, the former talent booker at Maxwell’s, the famed Hoboken, N.J., nightclub.

curmudgeon, Monday, 16 November 2015 20:40 (ten years ago)

thought this revive was gonna be about "Pumping On Your Stereo"

John Dope Assos (Noodle Vague), Monday, 16 November 2015 21:05 (ten years ago)

Didn't think Sloan had a hand in the writing, so I looked up "California Dreamin'": Wikipedia says he played the opening guitar bit.

clemenza, Monday, 16 November 2015 22:51 (ten years ago)

Sloan was a little nuts, but he was also very ripped off, and probably wrote a little bit more than he got credit for.

Three Word Username, Monday, 16 November 2015 23:17 (ten years ago)

also inspired a Jimmy Webb song I'm fond of
