-Leonard Cohen's "Chelsea Hotel" about Janis Joplin
-Blur's "No Distance Left To Run" about Justine

Wasn't most of Ryan Adams' "Gold" about Winona Ryder? What about Beck's "Sea Change"? Is there a particular J.Mascis song about Uma Thurman?

if you're going to mention Justine Frischmann, don't forget "Never Here" about Brett Anderson. :)

Carly Simon, "You're So Vain" about Mr. Warren Beatty.

hstencil, Wednesday, 5 February 2003 22:21 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought "You're so Vain" was about Jagger. Did she ever come out and say? I have no factual info to back this up, but I'm guessing "Cry on Demand" from Ryan Adams' Demolition is about Winona. At the very least, it's about an actress. It's definitely a great song regardless.

I thought it was about me!

There's a Aimee Mann album (might have been the last Til Tuesday album) that's mostly about Jules Shear.

Chris Barrus (xibalba), Thursday, 6 February 2003 05:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours" is all about other members of the band, and it's one of the bitterest albums ever made, and they still play all the songs together. I can barely imagine the balls and restraint it takes to sing backup vocals on a song that's a hate letter to yourself.

Kenan Hebert, Thursday, 6 February 2003 06:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Jagger sings backup on "You're So Vain"! (no, really)! I'm actually pretty sure it's about Warren Beatty.

"It's About Time" by The Lemonheads is supposedly about Juliana Hatfield

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 6 February 2003 09:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Ooh, the Marvin Gaye album "Here, My Dear" - if you count Anna Gordy as a celebrity.

haha commentary on provenence of "i'm so vain" (inc earlier funnier veresh on n's joke) in "poison paean" thread

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 6 February 2003 13:38 (twenty-three years ago)

What about the songs Bob Mould and Grant Hart wrote about each other?

dave q, Thursday, 6 February 2003 13:40 (twenty-three years ago)

"Didn't Billy Childish write a song about Tracey Emin?"

That would be 'Art Or Arse?' It's actually about conceptual artists in general, although it's introduced by an answerphone message left on Billy's answering machine by an aggrieved Ms. Emin.

"How Do You Sleep?"

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 6 February 2003 16:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Not sure if they were officially "lovers" (or ex-lovers, for that matter), but "Blood Brother" by the Mission is Wayne Hussey's declaration of love/admiration for Ian Astbury of the Cult.

By six hours - ha! I hadn't seen that thread.

I've read that both "Just Like A Woman" and "Leopard-Skin Pillbox Hat" (by Dylan) were about Edie Sedgewick.
