I just got Beyond the Pale and I can't stop listening to it. Is it drone rock? Or just, well, drone?

Yes.

Unfortunately, most of EAR's output on album has left me cold. I rather prefer seeing them as a live experience. "This'll just take a few minutes to set up," indeed.

And i don't dislike Sonic's other post-Spacemen output (well, maybe the treacly _Indian Summer_ EP). Actually, i only really enjoy those earlier singles, the _Spectrum_ solo album and the first couple of Spectrum releases, so maybe i'm not the best person to ask.

My favorite is Phenomona 256, "Tribute to John Cage in C.A.G.E." is just so nice. I didn't care for Data Rape, though, it was cool to see live (all the Speak & Spells) but the recording is kind of flat.

Ahh. The Speak & Spells all lined up in a row. That was a great live piece. What a wall of sound ...

Phenomena 256 is a thing of rare beauty.

The Koner Experiment (as in Thomas Koner from Basic Channel, and also feat. Kevin Shields) is totally underwhelming considering the massive talent on hand ... though by this point you could have probably guessed that from Shields' presence.

Well I...hey!

have only heard the koner expt...yes, it's awful and put me off investigating further

couple of the recent things Continuum and the live album (the one from Brussells '99) are worth seeking out. The last E.A.R show back in November last year was easily my favorite one out of all the experiments.
