calling all canadians...

What do y'all think about the "Great Canadian Music Dream"? I know it's tough to think about next to Yankee Idol and Popstars, but I've been wondering what people think about the artists on the show. Last night there was a hip hop group that sounded as if they'd stopped listen to hip hop in about 1989. There was also a band that looked like they'd walked off the cover of Select circa 1995.

Thoughts?

What channel's doing this one? I've never heard of it before.

Vic Funk, Thursday, 6 February 2003 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's the one on CBC with that Moxy Fruvous guy (which would make him a Moxy Fruvi?). I can't bring myself to watch this. The PR for the show is focused on how it eschews "image" and backstabbing and popularity contests--all the things (the only things?) that make a show like this worth watching in the first place.

CBC, Moxy Fruvous, undiscovered Canadian talent--you do the math.

i'd rather watch air farce and eat applesauce

No matter which way you add this one up, it's a losing proposition the second you get Moxy Fruvous into the equation. As nice a guy as Jian Ghomeshi seems to be most of the time, there's just something about that band that makes me feel like committing violence (possibly clawing my own ears off).

moxy fruvous, despite sucking, appeared on several science movies shown to me in grade 9 science class, and are hence cool.

Now I eat humble pie.

I work nights. Don't watch the TV. But I'm sure the show's just ducky.

Now I go out drinking.

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Friday, 7 February 2003 03:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, but Jian Ghomeshi isn't performing. Has no one watched the show?

cybele, Friday, 7 February 2003 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

nope. but I've seen the results.
A chamber group won for B.C. and the lesbian E Street Band of Edmonton won for the Prairies. How CBC is that?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 7 February 2003 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, but Jian Ghomeshi isn't performing. Has no one watched the show?

No, and that's not likely going to change for me, either. Of course, I'm not a huge TV watcher in the first place and I haven't been particularly compelled to watch any of those Making the Star or Idol shows anyhow, so this wouldn't have been a big draw in the first place. I think the biggest reason that I've got no desire to watch this is not Jian Ghomeshi...as I mentioned, he seems nice enough. It's really just the whole CBC music show syndrome...I can think of very few times I've watched something music-related on the CBC where it hasn't utterly sucked. The CBC TV music bigwigs seem to always head for something that appeals to the lowest common denom (as TV does, I guess), and that seems to be doubly brutal when it's Canadian musicians putting out stuff like that. They had something like this recently on CBC radio, where they had regional competitions and then the national...Big Break, I think it was called, and while there was some stuff that was worth listening to there was also an awful lot of stuff that was just ponderous, dreadful or dull. (It's also worth noting that most of the stuff on Big Break that wasn't terrible was also from bands that had released albums already, sometimes on major labels.)

Bottom line: I already know that this isn't going to appeal to me (largely for the reasons you mentioned in your opening post), so I'm not going to bother.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 7 February 2003 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay, I agree fully. But why do you think the CBC, in all their infinite wisdom, choose to do this stuff?

cybele, Friday, 7 February 2003 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

because, like all networks, they want seem relevant

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 7 February 2003 17:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Who remembers that commercial for some horrible-looking show with Jian Ghomeshi where he said "I'm the midnight cowboy of Canadian television"?

I was all, "You're the sexually-confused gigolo of Canadian television?"

slutsky, Saturday, 8 February 2003 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Gosh, and all along I thought this guy was the sexually-confused gigolo of Canadian televsion.
