Make sure you have either a static ip address of a domain registered.
Also password protect the server if you only want ILX/ILMers to connect. Keep this password secret and change it often.
Set rules about minimum shares and what types of files can be shared, Get some operators to enforce them.
Encourage clients to use DC++ as it is a better client and supports passwords easily.
http://dcplusplus.sourceforge.net/
Be prepared for a constant BW useage as well depending on the amount of people on the hub.

Direct Connect is definatley the best way for a community to share files.

Its best to have a dedicated machine run the hub so its up 24/7.
Most people stay connected 24/7 or most of the waking hours of thier time zone.
Remember the only files available are the ones we are sharing so the more people who stay connected 24/7 the better.

You need to be able to handle the connections as well, the hub I connect to has about 440 users and does about 10-40 kbs upload average.

Shame it's not a few months time as I'm setting up a dedicated 24/7 server based on an old P3 I've got lying around. Need to buy a new hardrive, case and video card before I can do it and funds are low. But, should we be in this situation when I get it running I won't mind hosting it (Although I don't have a static IP, but it looks like we can work around that.)
I've got ADSL so my upspeed is 32kbps, however it is complicated by the fact that I share it with 2 other people in the house, which may be a problem.

I can't be a hub for a variety of reasons, though.
But YES let's do this. I've got lots and lots of music to share.

From Napjunk:
steve says: Hey, I've had several users e-mail me and msg me on AIM/MSN asking if Soulseek was down, since a lot of users seem to be having problems connecting to the network. Was wondering if ya could tell me what’s up so i can have something to tell them other than "i don’t know, check back later to see if we find anything out"
Nir Says: Yeah, it's gonna be down for about three days. We're switching providers.

including "rapidshare" in your google search will often give you an active download link. Or "megaupload" or the file transfer service of your choice.

Ever since Audio Galaxy went kaputt, I've never stopped using Soulseek. OCD ops power trip nerds can keep their torrents.
― burt_stanton, Thursday, 20 November 2008 00:00 (sixteen years ago)
Tip: I Also use blogsearch.google.com instead of doing the whole google search for rapidshare. Blogsearch eliminates forums and dubious sites.

also: "rs" tab at 4ch@n

Torrents here. Used DC a lot for a while, but all the good hubs I used went down.
― Geir Hongro, Thursday, 20 November 2008 02:09 (sixteen years ago)
but rapidshare is the worst share site? unless you all are paying for it
― sonderangerbot, Thursday, 20 November 2008 02:12 (sixteen years ago)
google site:blogspot.com +bandname +albumtitle works 80% of the time.
slsk for the rest, like obscure italian doom metal from the 80s.
Blogsearch eliminates forums and dubious sites.
forums are actually useful sometimes for files. though usually they're pretty much genre ghettos.

Soulseek is still the best.
here's a stupid question which i will probably forgot to check the answer. It's only slightly related to Soulseek anyway.. When port forwarding my router i need to setup a static ip, which i've done, but now I've got another pc (actually a) laptop + soulseek.. Can I use the same static ip? (i.e. is the static ip related to router, or to a computer heh)
