Forget Soulseek!!

Why don't we do , as mentioned on another thread, just find someone to host a Hub on Direct Connect just for all us ILXers. Cant host it myself unfortunately but im sure someone out there can do it.
Imagine the great selection of stuff we could find in the one place. Should be plenty of variety and no way could the RIAA close it down.
Its very kind of Ian SPACK to host one temporary for now if the offer is still there. Is it set up Ian? or are we waiting for a full time one?
Who needs soulseek!!!

Tim B.D., Friday, 7 February 2003 12:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Thats all depending of course whether other users here say they want in. Anyone interested should post.
Ian : Which hub do you use just now, do you host your own currently?

Tim B.D., Friday, 7 February 2003 13:01 (twenty-two years ago)

ILM/ILX specific hub would be very cool, altho it would be a slow network i wouldve thought because maybe not many people on ILX have REALLY fast bandwidth? - i could do it as i have my own dedicated server, but i'm not sure whats involved cos i'm a bit fick...suggestions?

stevem (blueski), Friday, 7 February 2003 13:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I wouldnt expect many to have T1 or T3 connections(unless they have it at work, i know many only share/download at work) But im sure theres many who have DSL/Cable or even 1mb Broadband at home.
Also what would be best should the ILX Hub be invitation/password only or open to anyone?
Slsk is clearly on its last legs. The situation is very similar to the last days of AG. And AG just disappeared like that. No information was given at all. I've heard rumours its got too big for Nir to handle and he's just given it up before he gets sued. Then again its only rumours.
So if we set up our own alternative now we dont miss out and will have the best server out there.

Tim B.D., Friday, 7 February 2003 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I have 1.5 mb cable connection at home, but not really too keen on this idea.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 7 February 2003 14:16 (twenty-two years ago)

You need the DC server software from here

http://www.neo-modus.com/?page=Download

Make sure you have either a static ip address of a domain registered.

Also password protect the server if you only want ILX/ILMers to connect. Keep this password secret and change it often.

Set rules about minimum shares and what types of files can be shared, Get some operators to enforce them.

Encourage clients to use DC++ as it is a better client and supports passwords easily.

http://dcplusplus.sourceforge.net/

Be prepared for a constant BW useage as well depending on the amount of people on the hub.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Friday, 7 February 2003 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

You up for it Steve M?
Are there enough people willing to join to make it worthwhile setting up? Who knows if/when soulseek will be back(and for how long)

Tim B.D., Friday, 7 February 2003 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris : You say you are not keen on the idea. Did you mean on hosting a hub or just an idea of an ILX/ILM DC Hub in general?
If slsk really is down for a few weeks or for good , it would make sense to have somewhere really good for us to go. I tried kazaa this week and its just not got anything going for it at all.
If someone mentions a song/album/band/bootleg it would then be good to know that it can be found on the ILM hub.

Tim B.D., Friday, 7 February 2003 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

A DC hub relies purely on the shares of people hosting in the hub, all the file transfers are peer to peer so no uploads/downloads go through the hub.

Direct Connect is definatley the best way for a community to share files.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Friday, 7 February 2003 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Hosting a hub. My pc is on its last legs right now, so I doubt that it could handle the extra workload. In a few weeks when I get my new pc, than I shall be more than happy to host an ILX Hub. In fact I would love it.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 7 February 2003 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

The PC you have now what spec is it?

Its best to have a dedicated machine run the hub so its up 24/7.

Most people stay connected 24/7 or most of the waking hours of thier time zone.

Remember the only files available are the ones we are sharing so the more people who stay connected 24/7 the better.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Friday, 7 February 2003 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Count me in. Not as a hub, though. My shameful little "e-machine" is none too powerful.

Kenan Hebert, Friday, 7 February 2003 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

You really dont need a powerful PC to run the hub, just a decent always on internet connection and static IP address or domain.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Friday, 7 February 2003 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't have a static IP i don't think. My pc is 6 years old, with 3gb of hardrive space currently 436mb available, no memory, a 400mhz processor.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 7 February 2003 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

this sounds like a nice idea. I only have a dial-up connection just now. maybe I'll have broadband in a little while, though.

RJG (RJG), Friday, 7 February 2003 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

i maybe could host a hub. my computer is always on.

how do i do it?

todd burns, Friday, 7 February 2003 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

What sort of traffic levels does the hub have to deal with?

Laney, Friday, 7 February 2003 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

i installed it, but it ain't working.

todd burns, Friday, 7 February 2003 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris V if dedicated to the job that 400 would be fine to serve the hub if you dont have a static ip address you can use http://www.dyndns.org

You need to be able to handle the connections as well, the hub I connect to has about 440 users and does about 10-40 kbs upload average.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Friday, 7 February 2003 16:28 (twenty-two years ago)

kbytes? I guess you need 512kbit upstream minimum then.

Laney, Friday, 7 February 2003 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

does anyone have aim on here that i could talk to about this? if so, let me know.

todd burns, Friday, 7 February 2003 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

ack, I said I wasn't able to offer a hub! But that's mainly because I'm not sure how to do it. I have an always-on broadband connection but my pc needs restarting about every 10 hours, so I'm not sure if I'm the best man for the job. If I'm the best we have at the mo then I'll do it for a while until some superpowered Mr T1 guy comes along.

Just explain below how to do it and I'll whack it up tomorrow afternoon (goin out tonight, soz).

Ian SPACK (Ian SPACK), Friday, 7 February 2003 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

My upload speed is a measly 15 k/s though.

Ian SPACK (Ian SPACK), Friday, 7 February 2003 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Count me in for this hub business, at least until Slsk comes back alive. Unfortunately I can't offer to host, but I'm very willing to share my not inconsiderable warez.

Shame it's not a few months time as I'm setting up a dedicated 24/7 server based on an old P3 I've got lying around. Need to buy a new hardrive, case and video card before I can do it and funds are low. But, should we be in this situation when I get it running I won't mind hosting it (Although I don't have a static IP, but it looks like we can work around that.)

I've got ADSL so my upspeed is 32kbps, however it is complicated by the fact that I share it with 2 other people in the house, which may be a problem.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 7 February 2003 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Count me in too. Would love to share some stuff. But I'm unable to host.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Friday, 7 February 2003 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I will gladly use my 10 mbit connection to host a hub.

Just kidding.

, Friday, 7 February 2003 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Does the windows slsk client let you choose a server?

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Friday, 7 February 2003 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I currently belong to a restricted Direct Connect group, and freaking love it.

I can't run a hub (no static IP, ISP forbids servers), but I'm in for anything else.

J (Jay), Friday, 7 February 2003 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

ditto others: if slsk is down, i'm up for it. cable modem and all that, but probably useless as a hub.

bucky wunderlick (bucky), Friday, 7 February 2003 23:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Because there are only so many people in a given Hub it can limit your selection. 56k is nearly impossible for the hub. The key is quality & diversity. My computer isn't equipped to serve as a hub. If this is open to those who don't post as often but want to share stuff, I'm in.

Juan (Juan), Friday, 7 February 2003 23:24 (twenty-two years ago)

fuckoff.servebeer.com

here's a hub everyone can try to see how they like direct connect, i'm on here at the moment. This one seems to be up most of the time.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Friday, 7 February 2003 23:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I am very interested in this direct connect thing. Pretty much all the stuff I downloaded from Soulseek I found out about through ILM.

I can't be a hub for a variety of reasons, though.

But YES let's do this. I've got lots and lots of music to share.

from http://www.mp3newswire.net/stories/2003/SoulSeekDown.html

For the last 24 hours, the popular Soulseek network and website has been unavailable to its wide userbase. Because their host cache uses the same IP address as their web server (Shareaza revisited), the network is not accessible. Information gathered by Napjunk.com reports that the lone operator of Soulseek, Nir, is simply switching web hosts.

From Napjunk:

steve says: Hey, I've had several users e-mail me and msg me on AIM/MSN asking if Soulseek was down, since a lot of users seem to be having problems connecting to the network. Was wondering if ya could tell me what’s up so i can have something to tell them other than "i don’t know, check back later to see if we find anything out"

Nir Says: Yeah, it's gonna be down for about three days. We're switching providers.

Soulseek is down? I had no idea, as I have already discovered Direct Connect anyway. Only thing I miss on DC++ is the ability to see the running time of a certain mp3, which does usually give a rather good impression whether it is the "correct" version or not.

I spent a couple of years at Soulseek and found a lot of great stuff there. Have to say I usually find even more using a bunch of DC hubs though, even though I miss the memory search function that SLSK has (that is, the ability to search for something and then the the client will find it, not that day but maybe 3 months later).

including "rapidshare" in your google search will often give you an active download link. Or "megaupload" or the file transfer service of your choice.

google site:blogspot.com +bandname +albumtitle works 80% of the time.

slsk for the rest, like obscure italian doom metal from the 80s.

Blogsearch eliminates forums and dubious sites.

forums are actually useful sometimes for files. though usually they're pretty much genre ghettos.

This is not actually true while badongo exists. Rapidshare is quite bearable nowadays - they've got rid of the stupid cat images and hour+ waiting periods, OK you have to wait 15 minutes between downloads but it's generally more stable than say megaupload or zshare. Mediafire is probably the best one though. Although apparently some people have problems with that one as well!

When port forwarding my router i need to setup a static ip, which i've done, but now I've got another pc (actually a) laptop + soulseek.. Can I use the same static ip? (i.e. is the static ip related to router, or to a computer heh)
