Debbie Gibson vs Gloria estefan. Who made the best in eighties pop music?

Tim B.D., Friday, 7 February 2003 16:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I plead the Fifth.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 7 February 2003 17:02 (twenty-three years ago)

FITE!

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 7 February 2003 17:03 (twenty-three years ago)

what? you haven't figured that out yet?

i hate this planet.

jevjeb, Friday, 7 February 2003 22:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Ummmmm......neither?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 7 February 2003 22:14 (twenty-three years ago)

That Deborah Gibson to you, and she wins right handily. GE made some of this most irritating and trite HiNRG pop ever.

Aaron A., Friday, 7 February 2003 22:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, Debbie recorded with the Circle Jerks on a cover of "I Wanna Destroy You" by the Soft Boys so SHE WINS!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 7 February 2003 22:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Gibson for me. I bought OUT OF THE BLUE not so long ago.

the pinefox, Friday, 7 February 2003 22:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Bill Hicks' annoyingly "old sixties geezer" take on Debbie Gibson is probably his least funny moment ever.

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Friday, 7 February 2003 22:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Imagine if he'd lived long enough to encounter Britney, Christina, Backstreet, etc.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 7 February 2003 22:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Uh, hello, like, has anyone heard of Tiffany around here?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Friday, 7 February 2003 22:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Somewhere

jevjeb, Friday, 7 February 2003 23:00 (twenty-three years ago)

oops, i meant i'll see all of you here

jevjev, Friday, 7 February 2003 23:01 (twenty-three years ago)

"Foolish Beat" is impossible to top, Gloria doesn't even come close.

Mandee, Friday, 7 February 2003 23:50 (twenty-three years ago)

The Gloria Estefan megamix is of the finest pieces of music I've ever heard.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Monday, 10 February 2003 13:33 (twenty-three years ago)

However, Debbie Gibson sucks boobs.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Monday, 10 February 2003 13:33 (twenty-three years ago)

oh debbie gibson by a long shot. i have had out of the blue since i was kneehigh to a hobbit.

di smith (lucylurex), Monday, 10 February 2003 13:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Take a deep breath. Go back and listen to it again. IT SUCKS BOOBS

Lynskey (Lynskey), Monday, 10 February 2003 14:00 (twenty-three years ago)

...that's like asking is shit better than diahorraea....

russ t, Monday, 10 February 2003 14:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Diarrhea, i.e. Gloria Estefan, is obviously much worse than shit because it is runny and can't be disposed of as easily.

Kerry (dymaxia), Monday, 10 February 2003 15:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Jesus Christ. I can't decide. "Rhythm is Gonna Get You" vs. "Only In My Dreams". Toughie. Deciding would depend on a listen to their greatest hits albums, and frankly, I don't care THAT much.

Neither bother me when they play them at Taco Bell though. Except "Lost In Your Eyes," that blows.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 10 February 2003 23:03 (twenty-three years ago)

though my friend Trey in elementary school tried to fix "In Your Eyes" by changing it to "you can take me to the stoooorre."

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 10 February 2003 23:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Is "IT SUCKS BOOBS" supposed to be a bad thing?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 10 February 2003 23:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I think I wanna vote for Gloria if only because the opening of "Rhythm Is Gonna Get You" always brings to mind the idea of pants being flung at Richard Dreyfuss while he hides under a bed (thank you, Stakeout!). Plus Michelle Branch & Santana's "Game Of Love" made me wish more bands sounded vaguely like the Miami Sound Machine. I definitely like that 1-2-3-4 song. Debbie may rock if I heard her now, but I definitely don't have as fond memories of her songs.

This is a REALLY good question. Chuck Eddy, who's championed both, to thread!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 10 February 2003 23:20 (twenty-three years ago)

I seem to remember him saying that Debbie made a better dreampop song than any of the shoegaze suspects -- if that could be identified and mp3'd, I'll give it a listen.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 10 February 2003 23:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Debbie is fluff. Estefan is dreck. fluff > dreck. Debbie wins.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 00:26 (twenty-three years ago)

"Out of the Blue" is great. "Electric Youth" is awful. "Foolish Beat" is "Careless Whisper." "Shake Your Love" is annoying. "Only in My Dreams" is perfect.

"Rhythm is Gonna Get You" is depressing. "Conga" is disgusting, and Gloria Estefan should have been in Manhattan Transfer.

So, Debbie wins convincingly.

J (Jay), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 00:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Gloria Estefan released a genuinely good salsa album, which means she probably would come out ahead of D.G., but I'm not familiar enough with the ouvre of either to pass definitive judgment.

Rockist Scientist, Tuesday, 11 February 2003 00:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Mi Tierra. Still, if you don't consider that album pop, then qua pop music, she may not be as good as Gibson. (I'm a phoney. I haven't heard this album, but I heard one track from it while I was out dancing and I was quite surprised when I found out who it was by. It gets good reviews all over.)

Rockist Scientist, Tuesday, 11 February 2003 01:04 (twenty-three years ago)

I kinda like 'Game of Love' too: those silly guitar barbs.

Yes, 'Only In My Dreams' is surely the key to this particular highway.

the pinefox, Tuesday, 11 February 2003 12:23 (twenty-three years ago)

"Rhythm is Gonna Get You" is depressing. "Conga" is disgusting, and Gloria Estefan should have been in Manhattan Transfer.

I wish I had written that sentence.

Sean (Sean), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 16:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I have to thank this thread for reminding me of some more songs to put in my worst 10 of all time.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 18:58 (twenty-three years ago)

They're both crap - but Debbie Gibson was just a teen. Gloria Estefan was old enough to know better.

Ad:Gibson.

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 19:16 (twenty-three years ago)

"Toooooooooooo-NIGHT!!!"

I'd go with Debbie, though.

Arthur (Arthur), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 19:21 (twenty-three years ago)

You're all wrong. Even anyone who agrees with me. Debbie Gibson's music sucks huge unruly babyboobs and the Gloria Estefan Megamix is excellent. Okay, everything else she did was shite (with the possible exception of "Go Away") but that one track alone gives her the edge, the bono, the adam clayton and the larry mullen fucking junior over Debbie Gibson and her piss-poor collection of shitspraying output.
