i forgot about these guys, couldn't really get into them (i think the first lp was silur?) when i was young and they were all the talk of the town when they first came out. seem just the type to be secretly classic tho; worth revisiting?

I think Momus had a list of records on his site a while back, and he recommended these guys. I can't remember the name of the album, but I bought it, listened to it, and sold it to a used shop the next day. Shite. Sometimes I wonder if Momus showcases talent clearly inferior to his own to make his product look better by comparison.

Sometimes I get tarwater/freakwater/bongwater/schneidertm/to rocco rot etc. all mixed up - seem to remember enjoying 'An Amateur View' by trr, and everyone loves 'The Light 3000' - but there IS some connection between MOST of the aforementioned, right?

Andrew L (Andrew L), Saturday, 8 February 2003 00:18 (twenty-one years ago) link

to rocco rot shares member(s) with tarwater. they're ok. nothing special. i've sold back both of the cds i once owned by them (and rarely listen to the to rocco rot cd).

JasonD (JasonD), Saturday, 8 February 2003 00:27 (twenty-one years ago) link

well, i'll be the person that likes them in this thread then, shall i?

tarwater are one of the few bands who do the normal instrument / digital sound combination very, very well. "silur" (1st complete album) is probably their best, at least it's the most cohesive and has their best songs. their 2nd "animals, suns and atoms" leans more to the digital electronics side and is probably a bit too cold beacuse of that. "11/6 12/10" is a sort of b-side / remix thing that has more to offer than "animals". their latest "dwellers on the threshold" seems to be trying for the style of "silur" but it peters out about 1/2 way through. and... the guy's damn droning monotone vocals are entirely past their use by date.

phil turnbull (philT), Saturday, 8 February 2003 02:16 (twenty-one years ago) link

I agree with Phil...In aprticular "The Watersample" off "silur" is brilliant. The video is beautiful.

Tarwater - consistently interesting and enchanting. Worth revisiting? Yes.

These guys are really bad when they use vocals.

Weird, I thought I had contributed to this thread earlier.

Anyway, am amazed that this seems to be *the* Tarwater thread. Such a great band and one that I am surprised that ilxor is luke warm about.

djh, Sunday, 29 November 2020 21:10 (four years ago) link

Funny that you say that. I was sure I had contributed to this thread too. One of the few German bands I like. I got that early album from 1996 "11 6 12 10". The singer's voice reminds me of Lawrence from Felt.

Pondering what else was on that Tarwater/To Rococo Rot/Kreidler spectrum? (Not necessarily involving the same people - more, reaching similar conclusions).

The Notwist, Schneider TM? Some K-RAA-K label stuff?

Can't quite get the track listing right but so enjoying trying (and/or loving playing Tarwater and To Rococo Rot, particularly).

djh, Sunday, 28 January 2024 19:42 (ten months ago) link

(Just noticed there was a new Kreidler album last month).

djh, Monday, 5 February 2024 20:33 (ten months ago) link

Sort of compiling a follow-up of later works by the bands on the link above:

https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5h767IBOgdm7StF7jz7eBC

(I'm actually mostly just enjoying some of the more recent releases that I'm slightly less likely to have heard. I've not actually been that methodical so "later works" is very flexible according to how much wine I've had).

But I always enjoy ILXOR pointers about tracks.

djh, Wednesday, 7 February 2024 20:56 (ten months ago) link

My favorite later-period track from this cohort is Kreidler's "Radio Island" - from their European Song EP.

I listened to and really enjoyed this year's Kreidler album when it came out, but then it was pushed out of my head by the relentless onslaught of other stuff. Revisiting it and it's really great.

"Loisaida Sisters" sounds like something from Simple Minds' 'Sons and Fascination'.

Gah! CD would be £19 inc postage from Norman, £24 if I order from Morr Music. It must be so difficult to run a small-ish label these days.

djh, Monday, 14 October 2024 18:47 (two months ago) link

Yeah, import costs and vinyl/digital-only releases drove me to digital for a lot of bands. It's 8 euros at Bandcamp, fyi. https://tarwater.bandcamp.com/album/nuts-of-ay

Tarwater can sometimes seem so *perfect* that I feel bemused that they've only pressed up 1000 copies of the album (I realise they could do a repress).

djh, Sunday, 15 December 2024 09:54 (one week ago) link

This band had completely passed me by. I think I got them confused with Tarnation maybe - assumed they were a roots thing. Anyway, *Animals, Suns & Atoms* is totally working for me this morning. The vocals remind me of him of Hood. Another thought, and I don't see them mentioned in the thread, was Lali Puna.

I would prefer not to. (Chinaski), Sunday, 15 December 2024 10:21 (one week ago) link

xp So djh, I take it that you're loving the new record? I'm still absorbing it as I'm also kinda swamped with end of year recommendations.

While waiting for this new album to land, I stumbled over the TRR/Tarwater post-punk precursor, Ornament & Verbrechen. Much more experimental than their subsequent groups, the formerly GDR outfit was active in the 80s, fully reconvened for a performance in 2009, and again in 2015 with just the two Lippok brothers. YT clips are available of earlier recordings, as well as from their latter performance:
