I'm not a huge expert on the Detroit crew so I'll just list some of my favorite M/B/F/F-related tracks -
Donna Summer "Cold Love","Our Love", "Heaven Knows", "I Feel Love", "Lucky", "Nightlife", "Who Do You Think You're Foolin'", "Hot Stuff", "Dim All the Lights", "Love to Love You Baby", "Love's Unkind", "Romeo", "Looking Up"
Shandi "He's a Dream" (stoner disco)
Cheryl Barnes "Love & Passion" (stadium disco)
EG Daily "Love in the Shadows" (Another Green Disco)
"The Wheel"/"Istanbul"/"Cacophony" ('Midnight Express OST)(Another Greened Disco)
Billy Idol "Don't Need a Gun", "Flesh for Fantasy", "Daytime Drama"
Debbie Harry "Rush Rush"
Giorgio "From Here to Eternity" (would've been better w/ F Sinatra on vox tho)
Berlin "Take My Breath Away"
Charlie Sexton "Beat's So Lonely"
Sigue Sigue Sputnik "Love Missile F1-11"
Cycle V "Seduce Me Tonight" (best kybd solo ever, even better than Eagles' "Teenage Jail" or Nirvana "Smells Like Teen Spirit")
"The Apartment" ('American Gigolo' OST)

(Xgau c. 1976 re 'I Remember Yesterday' - "When Kraftwerk goes to the disco the best one can hope for is air conditioning" - HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!! Just in case you ever thought of taking any critic seriously again! How many computers is that again, FIVE? ha ha ha ha ha [pisses self], etc)

The Detroit techno gang all the way - Kevin Saunderson, in particular, is among my idols. I'd take the first Inner City album over the whole body of work of even Moroder, who I do like.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 8 February 2003 15:08 (twenty-two years ago)

As far as consistency goes, I'll take the Belleville Three. But M/B/F/F are /were a force unto themselves - just dig the "Trax" LP (Forsey + Bellotte(sp?) to see what I mean. Or Moroder's production on "Harmony" by Suzy Lane.

despite having spent the last two years or so listening to loads of techno i am still sadly none too familiar with the detroit canon...
i obviously know a lot of the tracks from mixes, but i wouldn't be able to identify a lot of detroit classics...
i should sort it out i suppose...
also, dave q what is your blog address?

Is the "Forsey" mentioned on this thread Keith Forsey (the same one who played with Amon Duul II)? I remember seeing his name on a Boney M credit at some point.

tom (other one), Saturday, 8 February 2003 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

yes

dave q, Sunday, 9 February 2003 11:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Billy Idol's producer and songwriter of "Don't You (Forget About Me)" Keith Forsey played in Amon Duul II?

That is so freakin' weird.

I dunno what the hell is going on w/ this thread; admittedly I'm drunk and just posting willy-nilly... But, the Detroit crew... c'mon, please.. Plus Carl Craig is the greatest musician of the last decade...

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Sunday, 9 February 2003 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I dunno...I don't see that much connection between "Beat So Lonely" to something like "Nightdrive", "Strings of Life" or "At Les"...maybe as much as Amon Duul II to "White Wedding", which to me doesn't seem like much at all.

I can hear a connection to the Moroder music.

May and Atkins were definitely able to get alot of music out of the gear/studios they had access. Their music has a lot more soul and life than most of those hollywood producers like Harold Faltermeyer which had access to the expensive machinery (like Fairlights/Synclaviers).
