Production Comps

What producers deserve compilations in honor of their best work? It's obviously been done before with Phil Spector, Lee Perry, Martin Hannett, Marley Marl, etc. Who else? What songs would you include?

Extra credit: Why would you include each song? How would you sequence them? What would the artwork look like? Would the jewel case have a clear side window or be in basic black? Digipack or standard? If it's a double-disc set, would you package it in a slim case or a bulky double? Which label would you like to see it/them released on? How many copies would you have pressed? Would you like to have the release date(s) coincide with birth dates or death dates? Do the tracks need remastering? Who would you have do the remastering? Would it be in 24-bit? Please provide your answer in 16 point aquiline black bold italic underscore.

I wanna say brian wilson but I actually think his production was lousy.Great music and arangements though. I think Nick Lowe is good. But to be honest I find flaws in all producers, especially george martin. But I am nit picky. Jim O'rourke I guess is nice, or whoever does most of stereolabs production work. Its never harsh, nicely balanced, good stereoimaging.

Owe n Bradley

1. Crazy (sung by Patsy, written by Willie; would include for spaciousness), I Fall to Pieces (he gets Patsy to sound happy and sad at the same time), some early pedal steel tracks (practically invented the intrument's place in modern country), Coal Miner's Daughter (needs no explanation), Western Stars by k.d. lang (beautifully modern and nostalgic; k.d.'s voice is volcanic), and all the ones I haven't heard or don't know well. That's the point of a comp no?

2. Chronologically.

3. Find some old classic advertising from one of Owen's early efforts. After all, he was a bandleader and piano player before producing.

4. I don't know what "digipack" is.

5. I don't know, I hate CD packaging.

6. Rhino would make sense.

7. First run of 20,000. After sales go thru roof, make tons more obviously.

8. Since no one knows who Owen Bradley is it would make more sense to release it on, say, the anniversary of the Grand Ol Opry or something similar. Massive TNN promos, lobbying for "career Grammy" award, etc. This really brings up issues that could be broken into separate questions.

9. Well the LPs wouldn't need a thing.

10. Ummm, whoever's on payroll for that? Rhino could use whoever did Bob Wills' "Tiffany Transcriptions".

11. I don't know what 24-bit is. If that means "good", well yeah. Sure.

Hope Arial's okay. ;-0

Producers that had a distinctive style (and mystique) that would justify that kind of compilation: Trevor Horn
Stock, Aitken & Waterman
Giorgio Moroder
Jam & Lewis
Timbaland
Marshall Jefferson
Max Martin
Chic

Conny Planck, who produced Neu!, which alone makes him worthy of a compilation. If you haven't heard them, the three reissues are, aside from being insanely good, impeccably produced.
