got my hands on that brufurd/levin "upper extremities" the other day - very nice in a prissy castrated 70's miles / alex lifeson plays nomeansno instrumentals kinda way. did strike me as wonkly enough tho'. what else?

search: Trey Gunn's playing on The First Day and Damage by David Sylvian / Robert Fripp. I attended their New York Beacon performance in the fall of 93 and Gunn's ability to lay melodies on top of his own grooving bass lines completely astounded me. His playing was flawless, completely right for the music, and he easily stole the attention away from the more well established artists in the band. There is a video available of the group from a show in Japan from that same tour. I highly recommend seeking that one out. Gunn's smooth facility on this complex instrument is very impressive.

destroy: the unfortunate regression of King Crimson 1994-present...Gunn's obvious talents are wasted in this group.

On a trip to San Francisco, about 12-13 years ago, I watched a guy named Daniel Kane playing Chapman stick on the street. I liked his music enough to buy his tape, and still have it and enjoy it. The vocabulary is pretty smooth-jazz oriented, but there's something about hearing it played on the stick, solo, that works for me.

Well, when you've got Tony Levin in your band, why would you need anyone else? When King Crimson re-formed as the 'double trio' (and, really, what a flawed concept), Trey Gunn's masturbatory chapman thwacking just cluttered up the sound. Levin's the master.

I would agree that Levin is a stellar player. His extensive amount of session work proves that all in it's own. And I would also agree that the 6 man lineup of KC was a flawed concept (but, on more thorough listening, I think you will find that the true masturbatory cluttering was mainly due to Bruford's need to show off his chops with little sympathy towards the actual music that was being made by the others). Gunn acted more as a third guitarist (so techniquely he cluttered up the space with Belew as Fripp was blissfully adding his soundscapes)while Levin handled the bass playing.
Gunn is a good player who truly utilizes the Stick to it's fullest capabilities. As bahtology so aptly pointed out, his ability to play melody lines while still laying down the bass parts is of a very high caliber.
I would not only judge him on what he has done with that dinosaur band. I would cite his first solo album 1000 Years, as well as his contributions to Sunday All Over The World, Toni Child's This Woman's Boat, John Paul Jones' Thunderthief, David Rice's Green Electric, and most impressively, his work with Sylvian and Fripp during the early nineties. There are others I could mention that are equally good, all a much better case to make for Gunn as a top notch player, all much more musical than the noisefests that KC has put forth in recent years.
