joel FACELIFT: yeah someone should say on ilm, most music is good

minna (minna), Sunday, 9 February 2003 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

actually ALL of it is

dave q, Sunday, 9 February 2003 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

EVERYTHING is good.

Wintermute (Wintermute), Sunday, 9 February 2003 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I agree totally. I really think this needed to be said.

Adam A. (Keiko), Sunday, 9 February 2003 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Let x = most music
Let y = good
x = y
QED

(This will not be seen as a proof by many.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 9 February 2003 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Most music I hear is in someway good, only about 5% is bad.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 9 February 2003 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

You are all wrong, you have confused the words 'good' and 'ridiculous'

Millar (Millar), Sunday, 9 February 2003 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

But something can be ridiculously good.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 9 February 2003 17:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Most music is ridiculously good.

Damn!

Wintermute (Wintermute), Sunday, 9 February 2003 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Most music is dumb. This dumbness distracts from the goodness.

Curtis Stephens, Sunday, 9 February 2003 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Dumb music becomes good if you listen to it long enough, and vice versa.

Wintermute (Wintermute), Sunday, 9 February 2003 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

dumb and ridiculous = good

jess (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 9 February 2003 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Good is to dumb as dumb is to ridiculous.

Wintermute (Wintermute), Sunday, 9 February 2003 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I think dumb and ridiculous are bad, but music is good. Am I wrong?

Adam A. (Keiko), Sunday, 9 February 2003 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

it's all semantics!

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 9 February 2003 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Most music is semantically incorrect

Millar (Millar), Sunday, 9 February 2003 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

This works if we classify "adult contemporary" as something other than music.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Sunday, 9 February 2003 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

dumb and ridiculous = guaranteed front cover of The Face.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 9 February 2003 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

All music is good if YOU like it.

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Sunday, 9 February 2003 19:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Oy.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 9 February 2003 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

all music is music if it is good, no music exists that is bad, because bad is not music.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 9 February 2003 20:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Bad music does not exist if you don't listen to it. Or rather, the music does exist, it's just not bad.

Wintermute (Wintermute), Sunday, 9 February 2003 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean, if you don't listen to it and don't remember it.

Wintermute (Wintermute), Sunday, 9 February 2003 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

If bad music plays in a forest and no-one is there to hear it, does the bad music make a sound?

Johnboy, Monday, 10 February 2003 01:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Music exists for a reason T/F?

Millar (Millar), Monday, 10 February 2003 01:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Louis Armstrong once said he could find beauty in any music. If the devil's in front of him, he'll simply look over his shoulder to see the angel.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Monday, 10 February 2003 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Most music is good, but not much is great (of course, 'not much' is still quite a lot)

Oops (Oops), Monday, 10 February 2003 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Like Ooops says, most music is "good" (or simply "okay), but GREAT music is rare....unless you just have appallingly low standards.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 10 February 2003 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Good as in what? Pleasing to the ears? I disagree. (/Adorno mode)

nathalie (nathalie), Monday, 10 February 2003 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I lean towards "okay" than "good," actually...."okay" meaning ultimatley inoffensive. Most music is inoffensive.....it doesn't bother you necessarily, but it doesn't inspire you/interest you/capture your imagination.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 10 February 2003 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I always viewed the term "music" as a positive, eg "it's music to my ears".

jel -- (jel), Monday, 10 February 2003 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

So most music is tolerable then? Kinda like most TV shows: when I watch the crap that's on, I don't become ill or go on a bloodlust rampage, but it doesn't do anything for me.
However, an argument can be made that the only art that is horrible is art that induces no reaction whatsoever.

Oops (Oops), Monday, 10 February 2003 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

log bomb?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 10 February 2003 18:09 (twenty-two years ago)

i always thought now we were being bombarded with music/noise. reading "from dawn to decadence" i realize this is less the case: apparently in the M.E. music was EVERYWHERE.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 10 February 2003 18:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Shit, the frightening goth imagery just above almost puts me off asking my question, which is,

Hey Ned (or anyone else) what exactly does QED mean?

Paula G., Monday, 10 February 2003 21:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm no longer taking that well-chewed bit of bait, Paula.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 10 February 2003 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I know, I've got to stop. It's like that girl who cried wolf fable, where once she learned the spell to invoke the wolf demon she just couldn't resist summoning him again and again. I swear I won't do it again until there are some actual sheep I want you to devour.

Paula G., Monday, 10 February 2003 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

"WELL, CHEERS TO THAT!"

http://www.an-irrational-domain.net/images/band87-92/band24.jpg

Would we look this festive if we really were "goths"? (vassifer), Monday, 10 February 2003 21:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey Ned (or anyone else) what exactly does QED mean?

End of argument, problem solved, equation proven, etc.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 10 February 2003 22:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I heard plenty of bad music

A Nairn (moretap), Monday, 10 February 2003 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks Jody, that does seem to be the way I see it used. But when I looked it up, the dictionary said "Latin - quod erat demonstrandum (which was to be demonstrated)" I can't seem to get my mind around the two meanings. I mean, isn't the dictionary def essentially saying "equation NOT proved"? What gives?

Paula G., Monday, 10 February 2003 22:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll at least admit that someone making music is rarely worth stopping. So I guess that makes it okay, like what Alex in NYC said.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 10 February 2003 22:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Did anyone watch the first few episodes of American Idol 2?

A Nairn (moretap), Monday, 10 February 2003 22:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks Jody, that does seem to be the way I see it used. But when I looked it up, the dictionary said "Latin - quod erat demonstrandum (which was to be demonstrated)" I can't seem to get my mind around the two meanings. I mean, isn't the dictionary def essentially saying "equation NOT proved"? What gives?

I always thought it translated as "thus it is demonstrated". Which then works in the context discussed.

James Ball (James Ball), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 12:30 (twenty-two years ago)

American Idol 2: first episodes were fuckin hilarious. Now that hey have got down to the people who are actually pretty good at the horrible style of singing they like on the show, i have lost interest...

g (graysonlane), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 18:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Didn't Louis Armstrong also say "there are only two kinds of music--good and bad"? Also he apparently couldn't see the beauty in bebop ("Chinese music").

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

The music you hear is a very small percentage of the music out there, and for the most part that small percentage would be good. It has to go through certain levels of judgement filters before people can hear it, and the really bad music is weeded out. (I'm going to sing a song, but my embarrassment stops me from doing it; or I'm going to record a song, but my judgement of how much a waste of time it would be stops me from doing it.)

A Nairn (moretap), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 21:27 (twenty-two years ago)

okay in a maths proof you say what you're going to prove, you say what you're starting with "lemmas" and then from them you prove what you're going to prove and then say "QED" like "look! I said I was going to prove this and here it is again, all proved!"

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Sterling Clover, I salute you. It makes sense, it makes sense!
Thanks.
