Great on Stage, Lousy in the Sack

I saw an amazing band today called Peelander-Z, a cartoony Japanese punk band with inane costumes and performing gimmicks. I'll spare you all the details which I couldn't possibly do justice to (though they include a banana-suited guitarist playing a solo while riding a bike). The point is, their live show was mind-blowing but you probably couldn't pay me to take a copy of their CD -- they were pretty tight but musically boring as hell.

Other bands like this -- great live show but not much musically?

Kiss and Gwar come to mind.

Sorry that was supposed to be "insane costumes" not "inane costumes."

Sabot, a czech two-piece. awesome, thunderous sound live, and the facial expressions and the skill of the drummer have to be seen to be believed. live, they sound like a dull math-rock primus.

ignoring the actual question you asked and taking the title of the thread literally, i'd have to say madonna owns it like bill gates owns microsoft.

(but she is NOT a good answer to the actual question you pose. but i liked the thread title better than the question. so there.)

Watching Razorlight on TV I always have enjoyed.

Hear them on the Radio, I always think "Tom Petty" and get bored.

Fo Gigure.

The Kills.

I agree re: Peelander Z. Their live show totally cracked me up.

I like Caroliner on stage and on record about equally, though.

As for the reverse, I'd say the LOWEST stage-quality-to-sack-quality ratio I've ever noticed (at least recently) is for A.R.E. Weapons.

Hahaha I was going to say Michael Jackson.

I had a crash worship cd, but it didn't come with a hundred naked, wine-soaked pagans on fire in strobe lights, so I returned it.

Loose Translation: Sexy Dancer (sexyDancer), Monday, 4 October 2004 16:23 (twenty years ago)

really? My Crash Worship CD came with a "make your own Crash Worship show at home!" kit...a box of wine, a few roman candles and a tuba attached to a car battery.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 4 October 2004 16:51 (twenty years ago)

Let's start a Crash Worship cover band. I'll play the FDNY.

dreaky from Crash Worship is now in Morricone Youth. From decadent tribal noise jam band to ornately arranged soundtrack music cover band.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 4 October 2004 16:58 (twenty years ago)

Huh, I played a show with Morricone Youth once. I didn't know anyone knew who they were.

I've seen A LOT of bands in nyc...

I saw Art Brut for the first time last night and the phrase great live show but not much musically sums them up perfectly - I will gladly see them again and again, but I sincerely doubt I'll ever bother to own any of their records. Lyrics, perhaps, but not music.
