Heino is a German folk singer who was enormously popular in the 1960s. He frequently appeared on album covers decked out in turtle necks and vinyl jackets. The thing which is so interesting about him, is his voice, it is deeper and more powerful than any death metal singer could hope their voice to be. With this almighty voice, Heino sometimes sings children's lullabies,

The children's songs are incredible. I've also heard his version of "Una Paloma Blanka," which is totally great.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 10 February 2003 21:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Where is the long-promised Heino/Haino collaboration?

Amateurist (amateurist), Monday, 10 February 2003 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I only have one LP, so I don't know how representative it is. I usually spike comps with "Ja ja die Katja, die hat ja". I'd have to put it in the "like it ironically" category. It makes me giddy listening to it. But what great style!

Kerry (dymaxia), Monday, 10 February 2003 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

And what's with the glasses? Is he an albino with sensitive eyes? Is he blind? Does he have Marty Feldman's disease?

Kerry (dymaxia), Monday, 10 February 2003 22:00 (twenty-two years ago)

One more thing : you can check out some Heino songs at this page .

I just had to hear "Katja" again. The page says it's naughty but I don't know German.

Kerry (dymaxia), Monday, 10 February 2003 22:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I take it back...I don't just like it ironically. I love it!!

Kerry (dymaxia), Monday, 10 February 2003 22:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I guessed you missed out on that very collaboration when they played in New York, Amateurist...

Because no joke is too obvious for Donut Bitch!

Nascar Wilde (nascarwilde), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 00:07 (twenty-two years ago)

the glasses are because he's totally wall-eyed.

immortalized by the hanson brothers (nomeansno side project) in "you can't hide the heino":

it seemed like yesterday when the girls would turn him down
they just stood and stared and the boys pushed him around
but then that wall-eyed man with the shades came into town
he got a turtle neck sweater he never looked better,
never looked better

down in the ratskeller, up in the schloss
everyone in deutchland knows whose boss
everyone in deutchland knows whose boss

Has anyone ever seen the bit from that German variety show where Heino performs "Und Sie Hiess Lulalei" (the song with the "Hula, hula, hula, la la la" chorus)?

Dude dances with HIMSELF. It's quite spectacular.
