I'll kick off with Amnesiac, South ("From here on in") on CD. Also a mint used vinyl copy of the Colourbox album for £1.00! All from Collectors Records in Twickenham.
First impressions - Amnesiac (as good as expected, lots of low freqs) South (baggy, conventional, fun). Haven't played Colourbox.

Ennio Morricone - "Revolver" Mott The Hoople s/t Free Music Quintet - "Free Music" Smegma Plays Merzbow Melt Banana - "MxBx 1999/13,000 Miles At Light Velocity". So far the Melt Banana is blowing my mind, and the FMQ stuff is also ridiculous. I haven't listened to the Morricone. Are there other Mott The Hoople albums where the singer doesn't sound like Dylan?

Uncle Tupelo's Anodyne (slept through most of it, what I did hear = pleasant but no more) Grandaddy's The Sophtware Slump (after 4 songs, interesting but unimpressive) The Essential Jimmie Rodgers (which I've heard and enjoyed before) and Turbonegro's Ass Cobra (yet to be listened to, but inside booklet photo is definitely in the "I SO did NOT need to see THIS" category).

You're in for a treat with the Colourbox LP, it's a neglected classic. Search out the 12" Baby I love you so and Official Colourbox world cup theme if you can.

2)Old Time Relijun, "witchcraft rebellion" (most people would think that this album is pure shite, like Birthday Party played by a bunch of people who can't play their instruments properly but I somehow like it.)
3)The New Pornographers, "Mass Romantic" (this is beyond words, great power-pop album and I love Neko Case's voice. One of the best albums of the year so far)

Well those last two should destroy any remaining cred with the ILM Massive. All second-hand + v. cheap.

Dave: re Mott te Hoople. Nope: "like Dylan" is what Ian Hunter did, start to finish. But MtH Are GRATE: what s/t is it, tho, as I didn't know there was such a thing...?
More importantly, I'm revocering from an extended Napster-less period, and find myself ravaging the R&B charts. Does the new Babyface track sound so sweet to anyone else?
― Keiko, Sunday, 17 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)
Still haven't had a chance to listen to most yet, though I have heard most of the hip hop stuff before...just catching up on it again, and reintegrating it into my collection/life (ILM influence). The Sianspheric seems nice for anyone into ye olde shoegaze, though it's not quite MBV redux or anything...more modern. More thoughts upon further listenings.

madonna - "holiday"/"i know it"
the boomtown rats - "i don't like mondays"/"it's all the rage"
supertramp - "goodbye stranger"/"even in the quietest moments"
steppenwolf - "born to be wild"/"everybody's next one"
the supertramp single was somewhat less spectacular than i remembered. the rest is splendid, especially the rats.

Not bought anything for a month, but this weekend I had a splurge in Notting Hill and Greenwich...
Blossom Dearie: "Give Him The Ooh-La-La" (Verve, '57)
Christophe Charles: "Undirected 1986-1996" (Mille Plateaux thing with lots of Mac ROM data I won't be able to read)
GNAC: "Biscuit Barrell Fashion" (Poptones promo - hoping for more joy from the Montgolfier clan)
Pan Sonic/Charlemagne Palestine: "Mort Aux Vaches" (#712 of 1000, live recording, Staalplaat. Quite excited about this.)
Pinkie Maclure: "From Memorial Crossing" (based on an ILM recommendation, but I can't recall the thread or the source)
Pram: "Somniloquy" (Domino promo)
XTC: "Apple Venus Volume One" (again, decided to grab a cheap copy as Tom's comments about this [from, what, 18 months ago?] were still bouncing around my head - well, I think he thought it was good, anyway)
V/A: "Leaving Home:1" (That Rattle thing from the Ch4 series of five years ago... I suspect I've got the best bits [Turangalila, Agon] elsewhere, but very cheap) ... and something for Pam.
Hey - nothing over a fiver! Score!

I was tempted to add some other "purchases", I have to say.
I did rescue a boxful of old CDs, mostly CD Singles, from a dusty wardrobe in the family home, but to see what they are you'll have to keep a watch on eBay, heh.
― Tom, Sunday, 17 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)
And the Apple Venus review was over two years ago. I liked it, too, with reservations.

The Byrds - Dr. Byrds & Mr. Hyde, Ballad of Easy Rider My favorite album (all in all) by them is Sweethearts of the Rodeo, so I was looking forward to this, but these two albums still sounded astoundingly ordinary, so a big disappointment. "Fido"? God, that sucks. "Ballad of Easy Rider" (the song) is a wonderful tune, though, despite the rather cliched lyrics.
United States of America - United States of America Decent historical footnote to the psychy 60s. Looking forward to writing "I won't leave my wooden wife for you, sugar" on someone's birthday card...
Maria Muldaur - Maria Muldaur Her first album (the one with "Midnight at the Oasis"), an excellent one at that. I've been singing along with "Any Old Time" and "My Tennessee Mountain Home" all day...
Miles Davis - On the Corner Never heard it all the way through. Pretty cool, freaky stuff, though overhyped.
― Joe, Sunday, 17 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)
Crane A.K. - Pink Eyed Pony (they should have brought Andrew Weatherall on board to mix it for them)
V/A - Sound Of The Pirates II (Boo!)
En Vogue - Masterpiece Theatre ("Those Dogs" is da bomb)
Labradford - Mi Media Naranja (hey, like, post-rock)
Matmos - A Chance To Cut Is A Chance To Cure (the concept doesn't really do much for me, but the music's fun)

purchased over the last few days: Manu Chao - Proxima Estacion, Esperanza. Pretty damn great new record from ex-Mano Negra leader. bits of reggae, folk, rockabilly, sampled stuff, latino rock. Sung in English, Spanish, French, Arabic and other things. Wish I understood more of the words, but still, it sounds great. Lucinda Williams - Essence. Don't like it much, though I usually like her folks/country/blues stuff. Very beaten down-sounding record, to my ears. Couple of OK songs, but not up to her high standards. The Pagans - Shit Street. US punks from the late 70s. From Cleveland. Raucous, fun, a few fast & dumb cover tunes and some fine originals ("what's this shit called love" is a good 'un). Also, saw the Woggles play live this afternoon. Didn't buy anything by them this time, but they put on a great singin' and dancin' rock&roll show, very much in the vein of the Fleshtones.

To return to the topic at hand, this morning I took a stroll along the North End Road and couldn't resist a bonny billie covers ep called 'more revery' - feat. songs by john phillips, bill withers, the renderers(?), john holt, tim mcgraw(?) and a rockin' version of 'sweeter than anything' by P.J. Harvey - anybody know what the original is on?
― Andrew L, Monday, 18 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)
Dowland: no, I'm not an expert AT ALL. I just know he was a lutenist, and that he didn't start composing as a serious proposition till his wife died (ie in his late 60s) (Janacek = another v. late starter) (= hope fer us all, in the orson welles = genius at 12 stakes!!)
― mark s, Monday, 18 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)
Tim McGraw = American "country" artist (see: Randy Travis, Garth Brooks). Married to Faith Hill. Lots of "hey, you're listening to Country Music" twang & stuff.
Renderers = New Zealand-based rock group. On the outskirts of any Flying Nun-related circle. Can't say I know them that well, though - I've heard they're quite gloomy & moody. Maybe King Loser would be the most appropriate comparison point?
King Loser = Nick Cave-esque noise makers. Lots of attitude, & a bit of groove to back it up. There are worse albums out there than _Caul of the Outlaw_. (They're ON Flying Nun, BTW.)
