What do i bring in the way of music.

Which route are you using to get there? I always used to use 'Ritual de lo Habitual' on Highway 97 going west. Although nobody uses that way anymore, do they?

tarden, Monday, 18 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

no they use the kochalia (sp?) .

anthony, Monday, 18 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

10,000hz Legend. I am now obsessed with this CD to the point where I wish I could listen to it in every location I can think of.

tarden, Monday, 18 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tarden, thank Zeus, somebody else is obsessing about that album, all my friends are pulling a Caesar on me, those backstabbing losers.

Good suggestion: LTJ Bukem's mix-cd's esp. Promised Land and the Mixmag cd. There's a rolling quality in the music that melts perfectly with the sound of the motor and the rolling of wheels. Quite hypnotizing.

Omar, Monday, 18 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Are you talking about that R&B 'n' hip hop mix mag CD? It was actually a record we played during a roadtrip a couple of weeks ago, until one of the guys said it was "pussy music."

Stevie Nixed, Monday, 18 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Why not try making your own? The ocarina (for example) is an excellent compact travelling instrument.

duane zarakov, Monday, 18 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Drove down to the US this weekend (from Montreal) and Beta Band's Three EPs is a good 5th or 6th record to listen to, when everyone's tired and pensive and there's a long stretch of nothingness.

Alex Huynh, Monday, 18 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Why don't you bring music you hate?

-- Mike Hanley, Monday, 18 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The best road trip music I ever had was a tape which had Stereolab's "Random Transient Noise Bursts With Announcements" on one side and Huggy Bear's "Taking The Rough With the Smooch" on the other. OK, mind you, it was perfect for driving, and specifically for the drive between upstate NY and NYC, because Stereolab would chill me out nicely with that "motornik Neu! beat" to keep me going on the Taconic Parkway, while Huggy Bear would get my adrenaline up, and keep me in sharp, edgy, alert mood for city driving once I got to the NYC limits.

Camper Van Beethoven's "Key Lime Pie." I believe this is the *only* respectable thing to listen to while travelling across any portion of North America.

the magnetic fields - charm of the highway strip

sundar subramanian, Monday, 18 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Bluegrass. The bus will go faster if you think you're being chased.

JM, Monday, 18 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Make a mixtape... starting with the Doors' "Roadhouse Blues." Maybe a Silos tune, something off of Cuba... A Son Volt tune, some Merle Haggard... or just buy the soundtrack to "Easy Rider": road music from start to finish.

andy, Monday, 18 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dylan, Bringing it All Back Home. Sleater-Kinney, The Hot Rock. Johnny Cash. 69 Love Songs. A Silver Mt. Zion. Laika, Sounds of the Satellites.

I drove overnight from Austin TX to Memphis TN earlier this spring via the state highways of the Mississippi Delta, and it rained heavily the entire way, forcing me to drive much slower than I normally would. I didn't listen to anything for much of the way that night; the noise of the rain was intense, and I had exhausted much of my music over the course of a three-week trip. Eventually I needed something on the stereo, not surprisingly, and I probably should have picked something that rocked -- something loud and stimulating to keep me awake -- but instead I went instinctively for Labradford's Mi Media Naranja, and it was the perfect choice. Absolutely beautiful.

kraftwerk- autobahn and a hearty second to charm of the highway strip by magnetic fields

Todd Burns, Tuesday, 19 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have spent many hours thinking about this: It's got to be, it has to be:

Astral Weeks - Van Morrison Bryter Layter - Nick Drake Blue - Joni Mitchell What's Going On - Marvin Gaye

and then perhaps things like...

Creedence Clearwater Revival - Willy and the Poor Boys ?Depeche Mode - Black Celebration Layla... - Derek and the Dominoes Dog on Wheels EP - Belle and Sebastian

The Gleeman, Friday, 22 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

On the mix tapes I've made for road trips, it's always the country and old R&B songs that sound best.

One of my favourites for road trips was Youth of America by the Wipers. Especially when driving at night. Atmospheric, dark and very gripping. Especially when you are driving your own car. My big problem when going for long distances is somnolence. I fall asleep. But a bus trip is different. Maybe you should try to listen to music to fall asleep too. Cocteau Twins?

This is me trying to revive this thread. I'm going on a trip this weekend that involved 6+ hrs. of driving each way, and I hate long drives.

I'm agreeing with the call on Astral Weeks above, and know that Elvis Costello's My Aim is True, the Stones' Exile on Main Street and the Pixies' Surfer Rosa have served me well in this regard in the past.

More good road music?

We were on our way to Columbia, MO last weekend and "Go West" was playing as we passed over the Mississippi River and by the gateway arch. If only we were heading somewhere, you know, interesting.

The wife and I will be making a 14 hour drive this Friday from Chicago to the outskirts of NYC. I feel like I need some fresh road music. Any good suggestions? I'm thinking I'll go get some cheap used CD's this evening.

The Amps "Pacer" and The Breeders back catalog can be found in most used cd shops.

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 20:22 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah I saw that Amps poll and that was partly my inspiration for this. Definitely will pick that up! Figures that "Trip Maker" would be the first to respond here.

I listened to the White Album remaster with my brother on a recent car trip. It was really amazing. We used to pass disc one and disc two of the old cd edition back and forth to each other on family car trips. We didn't get in a single fight on this last road trip, which is pretty notable imo.

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 20:31 (fifteen years ago)

Ha! What else did you have then along with the White Album and Kim Deal bands? I finally finished reading the alternative 90's poll after going through it infrequently and belatedly at work and that has some good picks too.

stingy, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 20:38 (fifteen years ago)

Unless the wife's tastes and yours are 100% in sync, ask for her input too. I'm always bringing what my wife calls "droning" music (Kraftwerk, African) and she wants songs she recognizes.

All 10 songs permeate the organs (Dan Peterson), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 20:39 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah she mostly will go along with what I like. She's actually going to be studying for a board exam in the car so as long as it's not super noisy and/or distracting it's probably ok.

Has anyone heard this new Mike Rep reissue on Siltbreeze? Seems like it would fit, comes with a download code.

stingy, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 20:45 (fifteen years ago)

Is it Stupor Hiatus? There's a great cover of Sister Ray on that.
We listened to a ninety minute Sprinsteen mix that I made, and we also listened to the World Cup final on ESPN radio. And I turned him on to Ariel Pink with Before Today, he loved it. Best road trip with my brother ever, tbh.

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 20:55 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, Stupor Hiatus, that's it. That wasn't the most excited World Cup final ever, but that's cool. I just saw Ariel Pink last week.
