Malcolm McLaren, Andrew Loog Oldham, Brian Epstein, Kosmo Vinyl, Col. Tom Parker, Berry Gordy, Murray Wilson, Russell Simmins...

Who are the ultimate pop group managers and why? What characteristics do these nasty men share? Are they a dying breed or an eternal scourge? Parasites or architects of the popular imagination?

What about Lou Pearlman? That fat fuck responsible for the countless teen pop acts. A latter-day Maurice Starr (who blighted the world with both New Edition and New Kids on the Block). Death is too good for them.

Kosmo Vinyl, if I'm not mistaken, was more of a Clash pal/hanger-on. The real manager/scourge was BERNIE RHODES, no?

Peter Grant, Shep Gordon. The best managers are those that protect the artist/band from all consequences of their behaviour, so the stars can get on with the serious business of doing whatever the fuck they please, TO anyone they please.

Larry Parnes and Gordon Mills fucked a lot of people about in pre- historic Britain ...

right...I'd forgotten about Bernie Rhodes.

has anybody read "Stoned" by Andrew Loog Oldham yet?

My favourite manager - Bill Drummond. Sending one of his bands to New Zealand and the other to Iceland on pointless tours because of some absurd ley-line-esque theory he'd thought up, as recounted in his 45 and Cope's Head On. A great man. Most of the others are effective, but tiresome to read about (MacLaren also a bit of an exception but I'd prefer to read a what-the-fuck account of his solo records than more Pistols mythography).

When an Eminem-t-shirt wearing fan was thrown out of an Insane Clown Posse show and beaten up by security, manager Alex Abbiss afterward said, "We completely condone this kind of behaviour". (Not that I don't like Eminem, but respect anyway!)
