Black Keys

I'm going to see Sleater-Kinney tonight and the Black Keys are opening. What should I expect from them? I hear they're pretty decent.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Friday, 14 February 2003 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Blue-eyed blues. I know some are keen on them, but the record was as dull as can be, to these ears anyway.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 14 February 2003 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I mean, Flat-Duo Jets, Doo Rag, Bassholes, Bantam Rooster, .. and now Black Keys? Does the world really need another one of these bands?

Besides, Medicine Head did it first and best 34 years ago.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 14 February 2003 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

given: the black keys' album, the big come up, suffers from some flat spots. however, i saw the two keys last year when they drove out from ohio to the west coast and i enjoyed the live show. i hope you will, too. in my opinion, it's unfortunate that many professional & amateur critics are too quick to bash the black keys - they enter the fray at the height of the blue-eyed blues duo backlash. sometimes it seems that it's just as cool to rip on the shit we were hip on just a year prior. anyway, i suppose the true test for the keys will be the sophmore release, which i hear is just around the corner. if it fails to improve upon the last album, they will surely fade away...

j.a.e., Friday, 14 February 2003 20:17 (twenty-two years ago)

My post-concert report: Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz....They sucked big time.
Sleater-Kinney rocked the house, however.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Saturday, 15 February 2003 17:52 (twenty-two years ago)

saw them with sleater kinney:
they sounded like BLUES HAMMER from 'ghost world' with hootie (of blowfish fame) on vocals.

ben sterling (frozen in time), Saturday, 15 February 2003 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope none of y'all dissing the Black Keys are the same people who've been hyping the Streets and El-P, cuz I finally heard both o' those, and they are WEAK.
Black Keys are far more of a blues act than an indie band, and I can see why indie kids at a Sleater-Kinney might not get it or be into it. But the Big Come Up, in my opinion, is the best "garage-punk-blues" or whatever you want to call it album since Now I Got Worry.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Sunday, 16 February 2003 03:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw the S-K show tonight. The Black Keys were... well, they didn't suck... they were competent I guess. I just don't like the Allman Brothers that much.

I don't think the indie kids got it.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 16 February 2003 05:11 (twenty-two years ago)

The Allmans? You mean with like long trippy solos and shit? Hmmm... I may have to revise my opinion and actually listen to these fuckers.

And no Horace, I think the Streets blow. I've never heard El-P, but he probably sucks too.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Sunday, 16 February 2003 05:15 (twenty-two years ago)

They weren't jammy, they were just very average southern rock.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 16 February 2003 05:28 (twenty-two years ago)

oh ok, then i still say no thanks.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Sunday, 16 February 2003 06:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the Black Keys may sound pretty cool to someone who doesn't have a lot of knowledge about the blues. But I do, so they sounded quite lame and pedestrian.
It also depends on the venue. If the Black Keys were playing in a musical wasteland of a city like Newport, RI, they would have sounded amazing. But not in a cool place like Lupo's in Providence.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Sunday, 16 February 2003 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I have nothing but respect for finger pickers.

They were Robert Johnson-by-way-of Cream, and therefore acceptable noise.

The indie kids def. didn't get it.

jm (jtm), Sunday, 16 February 2003 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

The only thing I liked about them was that they were from Akron, Ohio.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 16 February 2003 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

They're all-about the Cream.
Their new album is coming out this spring on Fat Possum, which is where they belong. I haven't seen them live, and from what I understand they hadn't played live (as the Black Keys) when they made their album, so I can't comment on that. But The Big Come Up has terrific quality of tone, volume, and soul.
I do listen to A LOT of blues, though not, uh, what you might call modern blues, SVR blues bar type stuff.
I thought Blues Hammer were most reminiscent of N. Miss A-S's (who I also like, but in small doses) and BK's seem to be the inverse of North Miss All-Stars.
But for real, El-P and the Streets, that is some wack shit. I liked RjD2, but ooh. That damaged the credibility of some posters in my eyes--or maybe just put some perspective on things.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 17 February 2003 03:13 (twenty-two years ago)

My sister saw them open for S-K and reaffirmed the boringtude everybody's mentioning.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 17 February 2003 03:15 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
Heh. I dig 'em. I can definitely see why a lot of people would find them boring, but then this is "my kind of thing",, and I'm just a sucker. Haven't heard the new album yet, though.

And of course, I love the Allman Brothers (Jody! :P).

Horace - do you like Cedell Davis? And are you me? Seriously.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Monday, 14 April 2003 09:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, I have yet to hear the man. He's on my list, an album title something about Lightning and Pines?
I take it you're recommending it?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 14 April 2003 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I am. Heartily. I think there are mp3s on the Fat Possum site, though I may be wrong.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Monday, 14 April 2003 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I had an outside hope that this thread would be about Branford Marsalis. :(

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 14 April 2003 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry. We can start here if you like.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Monday, 14 April 2003 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

We can start making fun of him here...

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 14 April 2003 17:28 (twenty-two years ago)

He does a decent job of that himself, actually:

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Monday, 14 April 2003 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Good choice of Beatles cover, too.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Monday, 14 April 2003 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Have you got the new one yet? Have you got the vinyl (of The Big Come Up? It's got a wicked "No Fun" cover.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 14 April 2003 17:52 (twenty-two years ago)

No, don't have the new one (see upthread). I have the Big Come Up on CD, sadly. My record player's been busted for years, so i just gave up on vinyl :(

They are playing two (yes, two) dates here next week.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Monday, 14 April 2003 17:54 (twenty-two years ago)

fucking hell. they'll NEVER EVER come here (Cdn prairies). I might as well not live here.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 14 April 2003 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Jeez. Can't you tempt them with uhhhhh..... no, I can't think of some rare and enticing product indigenous to the Canadian prairie.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Monday, 14 April 2003 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

we have wheat. miles and miles of horizonless wheat.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 14 April 2003 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

They're from Ohio, aren't they? They can probably get their own wheat. Shame...

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Monday, 14 April 2003 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Judd Nelson has been spotted at my local bar. He knows Brooke Shields.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 14 April 2003 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, that's something.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Monday, 14 April 2003 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Judd Nelson's Canadian?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Monday, 14 April 2003 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

No, he was filming some cheapo movie that nobody'll ever see here.
I was an extra in an Andy Garcia movie shot in the summer of 00, that (as far as I can tell) hasn't even been straight-to-video'ed yet.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 14 April 2003 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyway though, the Black Keys kick major ass!

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 14 April 2003 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah!

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Monday, 14 April 2003 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

CeDell Davis hasn't been well-served by the Phat Fossum guy. I saw Mr Davis a while back at a club in Nashville w/ the late music writer Robert Palmer, who was tootling a clarinet. It was good, real almost-atonal metallic guitar blues skronk...and CeDell D. has always been a good singer. But what I've heard on the Possum label has been shit--covers of "Green Onions" badly performed? Someone should really do a spiffy re-arrangement of Davis' greatest song "If You Like Fat Women" which rhymes "more fat women that you ever saw" with "come to PIne Bluff, Arkansas." CeDell is old and he don't weild the butter knife like he used to; he does a nice version of "Let Me Play With Your Poodle" on this old Arkansas blues sampler "Keep it To Yourself."

I talked to C.D. once on the phone back when he was living in Pine Bluff before he moved to Nashville to be closer to Capricorn's offices, I think, back when Capricorn dist. Fat Possum? He was cool, he told me he lent Jimmy Reed some money once a while back and that "he ain't coming back to pay."

Jess Hill (jesshill), Monday, 14 April 2003 18:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Fantastic! Any links (or a name) for that sampler, Jess?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Monday, 14 April 2003 18:33 (twenty-two years ago)

saw the BK open for Oneida in pittsburgh and they blew it UP!!!
i never heard of em before that and went on a mission to find they're album, since they had none for sale. found it and thought
"what the hell??! this doesn't sound nearly as good as they did live!!" no justice, i tells ya!!
still, a decent little LP. nothing too too special. but, i need to hear the new one. i hope they got it down a little better in the studio, because what i saw was a stomping good time!

Any more opinions on this band? I just bought "thickfreakness" simply out of interest because it was on a "bogof" offer. I don't know what to make of it on first listens. I've never been a huge fan of the blues but I definitely like the crunchy rawness of their sound which reminds me of stuff like Kyuss, strangely.

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

there's waaaaay more crunchy rawness on and less Kyussy sounds on The Big Come Up, their debut of last year.

I actually haven't listened to thickfreakness in months. So maybe I don't like it as much as I say I do.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

damn. maybe i should have got that one. then again, i like kyuss so why not? so "the big come up" is better?

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I like BCU better, there's a sharper edge on the riffs a more haunted sound, but Thickfreakness has deeper grooves. They're both good records.
I'm gonna play "Midnight in Her Eyes" really loud when I get home from work. Thanks.

not as much as I should be. but in the spirit of my existence as a low-rent (though I just got notice that my rent will be going up in Jan.) Chuck Eddy, here are somethings that haven't made me make a face like I accidently bit into a lemon:

ZZ Top (just got it yesterday, but sounds pretty good)
Bottleneck (alt country from Vancouver, better than that makes it sound, very jazzy, great female vocals)
Aesop Rock (not totally convinced yet)
Andrew Vincent & the Pirates (classic Modern Lovers sound from Ottawa, I wouldn't say it's genius or flawless but it's a hell of a lotta fun, one of my favourite records this year)
Fight the Monster (local band, still finding their sound, but hitting on some really cool ideas along the way)
The Parkas (cutesy power pop from Northen Ontario, like the Flashing Lights meets Sloan, if you're willing to believe there's a difference)
Rufus Thomas (my brother just got back from Boston where he picked up Stop Kicking My Dog Around for me, a collection of non-hits and alternates. Includes a radio promo where he announces his upcoming appearance with the "Fantastic Amazings")
Frank Black & the Catholics (I've probably been listening to this more than anything else lately, Show Me Your Tears is a really brilliant album and anybody hoping and praying for a Pixies reunion should buy this because it will change their minds)

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

bump

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 2 October 2003 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

That Andrew Vincent thing sounds good. I've been wondering about Frank Black, too. Is that a new ZZ Top????

adaml (adaml), Thursday, 2 October 2003 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

ZZTop: Mescalero
It's partway between all the bluesy greaser rock that they don't get enough credit for being so good at and, uh, Cher. There seems to be an abundance of vocoder and drum loop usage. It sounds kinda cool in a Jim White kinda whoo-hoo kinda way.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 2 October 2003 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Andrew Vincent MP3 here (though it's not one of my favourite songs on the album, but I still like it, don't get me wrong!): http://www.kelprecords.com/mp3s/index.html

well, it's probably my fifth choice of songs on the record, and here I am talking about how great the record is and then I link you to a song that I don't consider to be one of the best...I'm protecting my neck here that's all...

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 2 October 2003 20:04 (twenty-two years ago)

"Set You Free" featured in School of Rock. I haven't listened to Thickfreakness in a while, but after seeing SofR last Friday, I played it twice. I think it's gotten better in my absence.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 14:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Kick ass show. They rocked. The drummer is like animal from the muppets. The guitarist fingerpicks every song. Damn they rocked.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 12:25 (twenty-one years ago)

heard one song of theirs, sounded like something from a turgid early 70s blues-rock album.

dickvandyke (dickvandyke), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 12:36 (twenty-one years ago)

dickvandyke (dickvandyke), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Blueshammer were meant to be a joke, I thought.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

What a shit, annoying band.

Thank god they're not flavour of the month anymore and hence not aurally assualting my ears when I listen to the radio.

Sasha (sgh), Thursday, 19 August 2004 01:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I bought the first one of theirs and quickly relegated it to my "never to be played again" pile in my mind, not because I thought it was terrible (only mediocre), but because Mr. Airplane Man/White Stripes/all them Memphis Cartwright bands are infinitely better.

So why are they hugely successful? their formula is quite simple:

http://photos.friendster.com/photos/90/38/6718309/5477475561767l.jpg

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 19 August 2004 01:39 (twenty-one years ago)

That picture didn't come up, but it perfectly illustrates your point I think:

Having absolutely no original ideas.

Fuck I hate all these two piece bands that sprung up out of nowhere recently.

Sasha (sgh), Thursday, 19 August 2004 01:50 (twenty-one years ago)

To all those who constantly invoke Blueshammer: You do realize that you're taking your cultural cues from a 17-yr-old, emotionaly retarded and intellectually maimed, fictional character? Okay, just checking.

Huck, Thursday, 19 August 2004 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait, what? You do know that the character of Enid Coleslaw was written by Daniel Clowes, right? I'm not trying to start shit, but that response to the Blueshammer allegations is as one-note as the allegations themselves. Things obviously get really complicated when you're discussing a white band playing blues songs; I definitely don't think it's as simple as "white people should not be allowed to play the blues."
Anyways, that new Black Keys MP3 that you can get at insound -- it's referred to as "the ballad" above -- is awesome and really pretty, and if you are able to listen to it outside of the context of the race of the performers, it's a really good song.

Softly Weeping at the Oki Dog (Ben Boyer), Thursday, 19 August 2004 23:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I definitely don't think it's as simple as "white people should not be allowed to play the blues."

It's definitely not my point -- instead, the point is, "God, this is horrible!"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 19 August 2004 23:07 (twenty-one years ago)

so...it's called "The Ballad?" Like, the Testament song?

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 19 August 2004 23:11 (twenty-one years ago)

No, it's called "The Lengths." Someone upthread just said something about there being a ballad on the album.
Ned - I hear you -- I thought you meant the racial aspect of it (Blueshammer's song had a verse about how hard it is picking cotton or something).

Softly Weeping at the Oki Dog (Ben Boyer), Thursday, 19 August 2004 23:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I got your meaning, Ned, and wasn't intentionally or specifically accusing you of being an ignoramus. And yes, SWatOD, I'm well familiar with Clowes and all that, but wasn't the whole point of the Enid character that she was an emotionally retarded and intellectually maimed 17-yr-old who is paralysed by her own elitist cynicism? Or maybe I got something different out of it than everyone else.

I always associated Jon Spencer Blues Explosion with Blueshammer, rather than the Black Keys. Spencer seems like an asshat. The Keys came by here some months ago and I had a good drunk time in front of the left speaker, though the singer's voice sounds much better on the albums than it does live.

love the new album. I don't see it leaving the car stereo any time soon. parts remind me a little of the hypnotic rhythms of junior kimbrough. It's so stylish, yet so earthy. It's like ambient blues. The lyrics are not always so deep, but the sound sure is sublime.
