Bands who are required by law to state their name in every single song

So I'm listening to this album, and it seems like EVERY SINGLE SONG, they have to namecheck themselves in the lyrics. This seems to mainly be a rap phenomenon, as the main guilty parties seemed to start folks like Run-DMC via the Beast-IE Boys. But surely there are other pop and/or rock bands who do this?

john spencer blues explosion?

gareth (gareth), Saturday, 15 February 2003 10:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Devo did it quite a bit...but not every song.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 15 February 2003 10:33 (twenty-two years ago)

the primadonnas refer to people in the band all the time, but not the band name...

"They bought Julius a scooter, Nick a new computer
And me lots of wine"

gareth (gareth), Saturday, 15 February 2003 10:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Bo Diddley (he's not a band, but...)

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 15 February 2003 10:37 (twenty-two years ago)

(I am taking notes, actually. It's going to be incredibly difficult to just slip the words "Electric Bubblegum Arkestra" into lyrics randomly, but goshdarnit, I'm going to try...)

kate, Saturday, 15 February 2003 10:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Duh! BACKSTREET's Back were, like, the KINGS of this phenomenon.

It's also very bubblegum, as in Captain Groovy And His Bubblegum Army's smash hit, Captain Groovy And His Bubblegum Army Are Coming To Take You Away.

Much in the same vein as the stellar Talk Talk, "Rain Tree Crow". Also only for one song, so it really isn't relevant...

KLF, uh-huh uh-huh uh-huh, forgot about them...

Dude, I think the only reason the KLF even made music was to say "KLF otherwise known as the Justified Ancients of Muu Muu" constantly.

Ally (mlescaut), Saturday, 15 February 2003 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

everybody - wang chung tonight.

doug (doug), Sunday, 16 February 2003 11:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I think that's the biggest reason I *liked* the KLF, was how they yelled out (almost) my intitials all the time. There was a time when I used to walk about announcing my presence by going "KMF, UH-HUH UH-HUH UH-HUH!!!" OK, I think I need to have a KLF revival right about now.

kate, Sunday, 16 February 2003 11:40 (twenty-two years ago)

everybody in my elementary school thought KLF was saying Agents of Moo Juice until I read a Rolling Stone article about 'em.

We thought they were milk crazy!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 17 February 2003 00:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Talk Talk?

They did it in one song. ONE. By that logic, you might as well cite Living in a Box as well.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 17 February 2003 00:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Oi! The Spice Girls! It's never specifically saying "Spice Girls" (usually) but their only adjective/verb/adverb/etc seems to be "Spice". Also they have songs where they list their own names for some weird reason, because I don't remember them differentiating between the Mels.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 17 February 2003 03:39 (twenty-two years ago)

massive attack? even though i love 'em, i think it's funny.
well, quite a few songs on their first album feature self-namechecking...

Now I wonder, are there any artists who have never referred to themselves? I was going to nominate The Wiggles, but then I remembered they have several songs that go 'Ooooh wiggy-wiggy-wiggy'. Also, there are individual songs which namecheck one of the Wiggles - indeed, each Wiggle has a signature tune (eg, 'Play Your Guitar With Murray' and 'Wake up Jeff').

Sym Sym (sym), Thursday, 1 December 2005 03:00 (nineteen years ago)

When I come in on the middle of a rap song on the radio that I like, I'm always kinda bummed if the rappers don't name check themselves just because the DJs don't always back-announce while I'm still in the car. Maybe that's why I like Ludicris.

js (honestengine), Thursday, 1 December 2005 05:18 (nineteen years ago)

Don't The Hold Steady name themselves in one way or another on every song on their first album? Or almost every song.

r3000, Thursday, 1 December 2005 05:22 (nineteen years ago)

do you really need ludacris to announce himself?
